We’ve heard whispers, we’ve been waiting for weeks (which felt like months), and now it’s finally here. At the 2018 Mobile World Congress, Samsung announced their new flagship devices, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. And after a long wait, we learned a lot of new info about the S9 release date, camera, AI and a whole lot more.

From the sleek, stunning new refined infinity display, to its revolutionary new uses for AI and personalised intelligence, to the new, market-leading camera tech, Samsung have knocked it out of the park with the S9 and S9+. And if you’re interested at this point, it gets even better. The official release date for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ is March 16, but you can pre-order both devices today. Plus, on selected plans we’ll also give you 12 months’ Netflix subscription, on us.

Here’s a few of the things that impressed us most.

A fantastic camera experience, with a smartphone attached

As Samsung’s Justin Denison rightly put it, the way we use our phones these days is very different from even a few years ago. And nothing reflects that change more than the camera. It’s become in many ways the focus point of modern phones. Which is why Samsung have reimagined that, with breakthrough camera technology that adapts to the environment around it, and changes in light, just like the human eye.

With dual-aperture technology, the S9 camera lens automatically adapts to your needs. That means no matter where or when you are, your selfies (and group selfies) will look absolutely stunning.

Plus, its Super Slow-mo feature lets you record videos at an insane 960 frames per second (for reference, the current smart phone average is somewhere around 240 FPS). This lets you stretch 0.2 seconds of video footage into a 6 second slow-mo masterpiece. Especially perfect if you have a cat. Plus, you can use this feature after you’ve shot your video, which means you’ll never miss that perfect moment again.

Cutting edge artificial intelligence, in your pocket

AI has been creeping into the smartphone world for a while, and with the S9 and S9+, it shows no sign of slowing down. On the contrary, it’s never been as personalised, as integrated, or even as fun as Samsung have just made it.

From the personalised intelligence of the Bixby app (more on that below) to the new advancements in security tech that lets you combine fingerprint, facial and iris scanning, Samsung have integrated AI in a powerful new way.

But the most interesting new aspect is their new AR emoji mode. All you have to do is take a selfie, dip into emoji mode, and you can generate up to 18 personalised emoji that react to your movements, so you can speak, move and interact through your very own emoji. Plus, you can use them with third party apps, and share them with your friends, no matter what smartphone they’re using. Oh, and with their exclusive partnership with Disney, you can bring some of your favourite characters to life, speaking with your voice.

The most immersive viewing experience yet

In the last few years, smartphones have become more and more important as sources of entertainment in our everyday lives, when we’re on the move or just away from home. And the S9 and S9+ are as close to a perfect a viewing experience we’ve seen yet, whether you’re gaming watching a movie or listening to music.

The screens on the S9 (5.8in) and S9+ (6.2in) display vivid colours and gorgeous details, with the brightness boosted for superb viewing in high- and low-light conditions. And the AKG tuned dual-stereo surround sound speakers, with Dolby Atmos surround sound, are the loudest ever speakers on a Samsung Galaxy device.

A personal assistant like no other

Samsung’s intelligence interface, Bixby, was first introduced last year with the Galaxy S8 and S8+. This time around though, it’s been given a major boost in features.

Its new Live Translation mode lets you automatically detect and translate text in different languages all over the world. Simply lift your phone to the text, and it’ll automatically translate it to English before your very eyes. So no more struggling to work out what you’re ordering in a restaurant.

Speaking of food, another new Bixby feature scans the food on your plate, and offers up nutritional information that you can log directly into the Samsung Health app. It’s never been easier to keep track of your diet, and your health.

Oh yeah, and it looks stunning

Lest we forget, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ look absolutely gorgeous. Samsung have improved again on their screen, with the sleek, refined Infinity display making it a true pleasure to look at, and to use. Plus, we’re launching it in three spectacular colours, Midnight black, Coral blue and Lilac purple. Our offices are heavily divided on their favourite already…
