Interview: Glenn Gainor, President, Innovation Studios Sony Entertainment & Technology, talks about the Xperia 1

Whether you’re creating or consuming technology, the newly announced Xperia 1 is a smartphone powerhouse.

With its 21:9 CinemaWideTM display, inspired by Sony’s award-winning BRAVIA® technologies and powered by their X1TM for mobile, everything you watch can be enjoyed with more contrast, colour and clarity.

But the connection with the world of cinema doesn’t end with its display. Through collaboration with the engineers of Sony’s professional digital camera division (known for its CineAlta brand, and the “VENICE” cameras currently being used to shoot James Cameron’s Avatar sequels), Xperia 1 takes motion picture to the next level.

Its Cinema Pro feature allows you – with the help of eight different expressions – to turn the clips you’ve created into cinematic stories, and in the class-leading quality that 4K HDR 24fps in 21:9 provides.

Filming on the Xperia 1

Glenn Gainor, President of Innovation Studios Sony Entertainment & Technology, and the head of physical production at Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems, took to the stage at MWC to talk about how Xperia 1 brings together the worlds of creativity and technology in one device.

But after he’d wowed MWC delegates, we caught up with Glenn to talk 5G, the tools the Xperia 1 offers filmmakers, and the ways Sony’s new flagship smartphone is being used behind-the-scenes at Screen Gems.

Glenn Gainor with the Xperia 1

Can you talk to us about how creativity and technology go hand-in-hand?
Creativity, when combined with technology, brings about amazing content for audiences to enjoy and as creators intended it to be seen.

At its core, Sony is a creative entertainment company driven by technology, showing first-hand the connection between creativity and technology.

In a world booming with content from games to films, having technology that will make the creative process seamless and efficient is often key to breaking through.

The Xperia 1 now plays a role at Sony’s Screen Gems. Can you tell us more about it?
We have started using Xperia 1 as a professional-grade monitor on-site to view images as they are captured by our cameras.

In the near future, I can picture a film set where we no longer have to gather around one monitor, but rather have one smartphone per person displaying high picture quality on location.

The Xperia 1 being used on-set

How will the Xperia 1’s 21:9 CinemaWideTM display change the way the consumer views content on their Xperia Mobile device?
Sony’s ground-breaking technology packed into the Xperia 1 enables us to view the content in exactly the way we as creators envisioned.

The Xperia 1 has the world’s first 4K HDR OLED display*, making sure the films are delivered with striking colours with great depths.

Master monitor screen showing incredible depth of colour

The CinemaWide™ screen of the Xperia 1 is a professional-grade display, meaning it has a high contrast ratio offering the deepest blacks and natural whites for a fantastic viewing experience.

5G is a big subject at the moment, can you discuss what role 5G will play in this new era of creation?
With this new reality, large capacity communication is going to be essential to handle massive amounts of data.  And there’s no doubt that 5G will play a key role in this new era of content creation.

With the power of 5G connectivity, more and more people will be able to join us in telling their stories. I believe in the power of Sony’s technology and its potential in content creation because today, more than ever, storytelling and technology are woven together.

5G will not only unlock the power of content for consumers – offering speed with reduced latency and the power to enable full enjoyment of new and richer content – but it will also open immense opportunities for those who make content from movies to games.

As I mentioned earlier, we are looking to Xperia as a handheld monitor for filmmakers. Imagine if we can use the Xperia smartphones to push our footage from the cameras to the onset filmmakers all the way to our editors who may be in a post-production facility in our own studio. Our options are limitless.

Glenn Gainor using the Xperia 1 in the film process

What tools does the Xperia 1 offer content creators?
In content creation, “reality” is essential, and we are giving content creators the tools needed to tell real-world stories in radically new ways at Innovation Studios.

Sony’s very own Innovation Studios and its technologies are revolutionising virtual content creation.

The studio’s gear includes Sony’s professional camera system which digitises physical data with our volumetric Image Acquisition technology. By layering this photo-realistic three-dimensional recreation of the physical world with a virtual character that can interact, we are realizing telepresence in content creation.

This is going to take shooting, picture quality, and viewing to another level. We are leading a revolution in content creation.

Are movies being made differently to accommodate the rise of people watching films on their phones?
We have to be aware that our movies can be enjoyed across an array of platforms from the cinema screen to the phone. With the advances of phone screen technology like what we see in Xperia 1 it’s critical be mindful of high dynamic range (HDR) while shooting the movie. In fact, we’ve recently leaned into shots that celebrate blacker blacks and whiter whites because we know that downstream technology has the latitude to accommodate these images.

#SonyMWC FAQ: We answer all the questions you’ve been asking about our new Xperia smartphones

#SonyMWC FAQ: We answer all the questions you’ve been asking about our new Xperia smartphones

MWC is in full swing here in Barcelona, where we at Sony Mobile have just launched our new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1.

The Xperia 1’s unprecedented professional-grade features mean you can stream your content on a 4K HDR OLED screen, watching films and playing games in the colours and clarity their creators intended. And thanks to its advanced triple lens camera and Cinema Pro movie recording, you too can create content with pro-level quality.

Since the news was announced, Sony fans have been getting in touch with their questions about this truly incredible device, so we’ve created this handy FAQ to provide you with the answers.

Purple Xperia 1 on display at MWC

You haven’t announced a 5G smartphone at MWC. Why?
We are showcasing a 5G smartphone prototype featuring mmW connectivity at MWC19 in Barcelona.

We believe that 5G mmW technology will bring real benefit to both consumers and the industry, and we are carefully looking to launch a 5G model from both device technology as well as infrastructure perspectives.

Your competitors are launching foldable phones. Why have you not launched something similar at MWC this year?
With the Xperia 1, we wanted to create a smartphone powerhouse with a minimal and timeless design that showcases the 21:9 4K HDR OLED display. Despite its incredible range of features, it’s beautifully slim with perfect hand-fit.

For those who want to run two apps at once, the Xperia 1 can do so using the multi-window feature, which allows you to watch Netflix content while writing emails or messaging friends on WhatsApp. The 21:9 display offers ample useable screen space, meaning you can see and do more. The split screen can be triggered with either Side sense*, the 21:9 multi-window launcher or voice command**.

There’s a lot of talk about the professional technologies in the Xperia 1. Does that mean it’s just for professionals?
No. We want everyone to use the smartphone to create their own professional-quality content, as in the Xperia 1 we’ve given consumers the professional-level tools to do so. The Xperia 1 is simply targeted at those who love the latest innovations and appreciate beautiful design.

A film studio on the Sony booth at MWC

You’ve been talking about ‘One Sony’ – how has this evolved in the Xperia 1?
The Xperia 1 combines all the best and latest innovations from across the Sony portfolio, offering the unprecedented quality that could only be achieved through the shared expertise across Sony, delivering professional-level kit to dedicated and passionate creators.

The 4K HDR OLED display (the world’s first in a smartphone***) is powered by Sony’s award-winning BRAVIA® technologies, while Sony Mobile has also collaborated with Sony’s professional digital cinema camera division, known for its CineAlta brand.

Using the Xperia 1’s Cinema Pro feature, you can shoot everyday action with a cinematic, natural quality. CineAlta’s “VENICE” camera – used to shoot James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar – was displayed at the Sony booth this year in a clear indication of the partnership between the two areas of Sony.

The Xperia 1 at MWC, showcasing its 21:9 display

Was the 21:9 display also a result of collaboration between different parts of the Sony business?
The CinemaWideTM display offers unique experiences that make watching content more immersive while still allowing for perfect hand-fit. Currently, 67% of Netflix Original content is filmed in the 21:9 ratio, and watching Netflix on the Xperia 1 automatically triggers Creator Mode.

Creator Mode, which reproduces colours in way that is faithful to the creator’s intent, was inspired by Sony’s Master Monitor technology used by filmmakers at studios renowned for major blockbusters, including Sony Pictures.

The 21:9 display also offers a deeper, unrestricted view of gameplay, and we’re collaborating with game studios to provide more 21:9 titles. We can confirm we will be offering Fortnite in 21:9 (a collaboration with Epic Games), as well as Asphalt 9 and Arena of Valor.

The gaming area of the Sony booth at MWC

How does the sound of the Xperia 1 differ from its rivals?
The Xperia 1 will launch with Dolby Atmos®, creating an amazing audio experience with moving audio that flows above and around you, whether listening via headset or through the built-in speakers.

The sound tuning on the new device, which perfectly complements the cinematic 21:9 display when watching content at home or on the go, was developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures entertainment. The audio optimisation included dynamic range tuning for better reproduction of the surround sound effect, so when you’re watching a film, for instance, the dialogue is ‘there’ in front of you while the background noise and chatter feels as though it is all around you.

The fingerprint sensor has been moved to the side. Why?
Each product has the best fingerprint position in terms of both design and usability. As you know we placed the sensor on the rear in previous models which we considered the natural position for the rounded curvature design. However, we received a lot of valuable feedback about the position from customers and reconsidered the side placement for our new design language.

Can the Xperia 1 be charged wirelessly?
We prioritised the design of the device over having wireless charging after listening to customer feedback to ensure we’re delivering features and experiences they value most.

To find out even more, head to our guide on everything you need to know about the Xperia 1.

*[For Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus] Available in summer 2019 with software update. Software rollouts are a phased process – timing and availability will vary by market and/or operator. Most models supported but some operator/market exceptions will apply.

‘Eye-poppingly brilliant’: Here’s what the media are saying about Xperia 1, Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus

In Barcelona and beyond, the Xperia 1, Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are causing quite a stir following their MWC debut.

With its unprecedented professional technologies and the world’s first 4K HDR OLED screen in a smartphone*, it’s perhaps no surprise that the world’s media have been singing the Xperia 1’s praises.

TechRadar said the Xperia 1’s camera makes it ‘possibly the best phone for video yet’, while Stuff said the device’s design conveyed an ‘industrial cool’.

‘Eye-poppingly brilliant’: Here’s what the media are saying about Xperia 1, Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus

Meanwhile, on the Xperia 10 Plus, Trusted Reviews said the 21:9 display brings ‘a new perspective’ with a ‘slender footprint’.

Here are some of the standout quotes from international media:

Android Central

“Where the Xperia 1 truly stands out is the camera, with the phone featuring three 12MP cameras at the back — a primary lens joined by a wide-angle shooter and a zoom lens. Sony says it leveraged technology from its α series of interchangeable lens cameras to bring the world’s first Eye AF (Auto Focus) tech to a phone.”

Android Authority

“The Sony Xperia 1 doesn’t shy away from top specs. In addition to the 4K HDR OLED screen, it has a Snapdragon 855 processor with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The triple camera setup offers wide, standard, and telephoto views. All three cameras capture 12MP images. The phone can record 4K video in HDR, and offers lots of options for slow motion capture.”

The Express

“There’s a nice feature for anyone who enjoys shooting video on their devices. Via a collaboration with the engineers of Sony’s professional digital cinema camera division known for its CineAlta brand, the Xperia 1 should offer some nice extras when recording moving images.”

‘Eye-poppingly brilliant’: Here’s what the media are saying about Xperia 1, Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus

Forbes

“On the flagship Xperia 1, its [display is] eye-poppingly brilliant: the Xperia 1 has a 21:9 6.5in 4K HDR OLED screen. It looks mesmerizingly good. At first, you think this is just a good screen but then, when you look at photos, video, YouTube or Netflix, the visuals suddenly become remarkable.”

“The displays on the Xperia 10, Xperia 10 Plus and especially the Xperia 1 have to be seen to be believed. They are just great.”

GSM Arena

“One [new camera feature on the Xperia 1] is Eye AF – an intelligent focusing system that can fix itself on a subject’s eye and provide impressively accurate tracking. Not only it is smart enough to easily tell the distance the person in question is at, but it can also remember a particular eye. So that even if more people come into the frame or said person moves out of the frame and then back in, the eye-tracking and focus that goes along with it remain unfazed. Really neat!”

Pocket-lint

“[The Xperia 1] will tower above its competition, but it’s only 72mm wide, meaning despite that height, it’s very comfortable to hold and it looks good too.”

“[On the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus] Images and footage both look great on the wide display… The Sony Xperia 10 Plus brings a new form factor to the mid-range smartphone market.”

Stuff

“The obvious star of the show is that 4K HDR OLED panel and it’s central to everything the Xperia 1 aims to excel at – consuming content, playing games, multitasking, displaying great photos and showing thrilling videos.”

TechRadar

“Films and games on the [Xperia 1] display were some of the clearest we’ve seen on any smartphone, and we’re almost certain this offers one of the best experiences of watching films on a phone. We watched a variety of content on the display including film trailers for the upcoming Spider-Man and Men in Black films that showed off the display fantastically.”

‘Eye-poppingly brilliant’: Here’s what the media are saying about Xperia 1, Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus

The Sun

“I am a fan of Sony’s colour scheme [for the Xperia 1], particularly the purple. It’s a bold choice, but in a world of purely black and white handsets it’s nice to see someone trying something different.”

The Verge

“A lot of our phone content tends to be things displayed in vertical lists, like text message threads, emails, Instagram feeds, and so on. A taller screen means you can read and browse more stuff at once. Sony is also emphasising multitasking, with the idea that you can have a second app pinned to the top of your screen (like a map), while still using a second app at what would be full-screen size on a smaller phone below it.”

Trusted Reviews

“With the growth in mobile video and streaming, Sony wanted to engineer phones that put entertainment first. When viewed in landscape, the 10 Plus’ aspect ratio is the perfect fit for film.”

Everything you need to know about Sony’s new Xperia 1

Everything you need to know about Sony’s new Xperia 1

Say hello to the new Xperia 1: the stunning flagship smartphone with unprecedented professional-grade technologies, and the latest addition to the Xperia family.

Sony’s Xperia 1 hosts a 21:9 screen ratio with the world’s first 4K HDR OLED display* for mobile, bringing you closer to the music, movies and games you love in the quality their creators intended for a completely unique experience.

What’s more, the Xperia 1 is the world’s first mobile device with Eye AF** (Auto Focus). Its triple camera not only finds the eye, but establishes focus and holds the eye as the smartphone and subject move.

Mitsuya Kishida launches the Xperia 1

We’ve pulled out all the key features of the Xperia 1 to show you just how intelligent, beautiful and unique this smartphone powerhouse is.

Just like the movies

Are you a fan of going to the cinema? The Xperia 1 offers a true picture house experience – only this one can be held in the palm of your hand. Gone are the days of squinting at your smartphone screen to read the subtitles on your favourite foreign film!

The Xperia 1’s 6.5” (1644 x 3840px) CinemaWide™ screen brings you professional-grade colour accuracy and reproduction, combined with the latest X1™ for mobile from BRAVIA® to ensure an unparalleled viewing experience.

Sony's Master Monitor on display alongside Xperia 1 at MWC

How does it do this? The X1 engine remasters content to High Dynamic Range (HDR) to offer exceptional contrast and crystal-clear clarity. Its 10 bit tonal gradation delivers deeper blacks and true-to-life colours. Creator mode, inspired by the Master Monitor colour reproduction technology used by filmmakers at major studios including Sony Pictures, means the Xperia 1 boasts consistent colour reproduction true to the creator’s intent.

A truly immersive experience

With Xperia 1, you’ll be able to enjoy your favourite music as though you were dancing around in the crowd at a live performance with High Resolution Audio and DSEE HX™. Dolby Atmos® creates an impressive audio experience, amplifying your films, games and music to give multi-dimensional sound that flows around you in a similar fashion to a surround sound set-up.

The Xperia 1 is packed with premium audio technologies

Shoot like a pro

Sony has been an industry-leader in cameras since it released its first digital camera in 1988, so it only made sense to include our expert digital imaging technologies within the Xperia 1.

With its 16mm super wide lens, 26 mm lens and 52mm lens, as well as 2x Optical Zoom, the Xperia 1’s triple camera will upgrade your everyday photography. We’ve already mentioned that the Xperia 1 is the world’s first smartphone camera to feature Eye AF (Auto Focus), capable of identifying and keeping a human eye in focus.  So whether you’re snapping the sunset, getting up close for the perfect wildlife shot or trying to cram all your friends into one snap, you can capture images of almost anything knowing that your phone will be doing most of the leg-work for you!

For the budding moviemakers amongst you, the Xperia 1 open up a new world of creative possibilities in movie recording. The Xperia 1’s class-leading video capabilities draw upon the technology found in Sony’s professional digital cinema camera division (known for its CineAlta brand) so you can shoot your own 4K HDR cinematic movies in the same 21:9 aspect ratio that a professional videographer – and indeed the directors of most of today’s Hollywood blockbusters – would. Couple this with the unique hybrid stabilisation system running Optical SteadyShot™ and you’ll be able to capture shake-free, smooth videos, even when recording on the move. Did someone say ‘Sundance Film Festival’?!

Capturing content on the Xperia 1

With the Xperia 1’s new Cinema Pro feature, you can record cinematic movies with the look and feel that you choose. Sony’s Digital motion picture camera engineers collaborated with the Xperia team on the LOOK colour setting, meaning that whether you want to convey a sense of warmth and brightness, or create a chilly sci-fi-style atmosphere, you can choose the option that best suits your clip.

Level up your mobile gaming

Whether you prefer challenging puzzles or cinematic RPGs, the Xperia 1 offers an incomparable smartphone gaming experience. Find all your games in one place, share with friends and talk while you play thanks to the Game Enhancer app. What’s more, you’ll be able to pull up handy tips and tricks for when you need a little extra help with the trickier levels! And with a sharp 21:9 display you can dive deeper into these intricate visual worlds.

Beautiful design. Superb fit.

The design team thought carefully about the Xperia 1 to ensure that all the incredible software was encased in hardware as impressive as its performance.

The Xperia 1 colour range

The bold, seamless body is perfectly designed to fit comfortably in your hand and comes in four stunning colours: Black, White, Grey and Purple.

With a sleek metal frame and durable Corning® Gorilla® Glass 6 front and back, helping to keep your Xperia 1 safe from bumps, scratches and drops. Ever find your phone ringing when you’re out in the rain? Now you can relax knowing the IP65/68 water resistant rating guards your Xperia 1 against the elements***.

A mobile experience that’s personal to you
