Can’t bear the same old snaps? Here’s how we took unique travel photography in Berlin

Can’t bear the same old snaps? Here’s how we took unique travel photography in Berlin

These days, going somewhere on vacation – or even just a work trip – isn’t just a time to relax and take in your surroundings. It’s an opportunity to show off your smartphone photography skills.

With smartphone cameras able to capture incredible images, you have a device right there in your pocket that can snap enviable pictures on-the-go.

Sony’s latest flagship smartphone, Xperia 5, houses a standout triple lens camera that can deliver beautiful images of different scenes, whether you’re taking pictures in daylight, lowlight or the magical ‘golden hour’ before sunrise and after sunset.

We’ve already taken Xperia smartphones on our travels, showing you how to capture amazing images on your city break, as well as how to find unique shots when you’re pressed up against other tourists in some of the world’s most-visited places.

But with the UN estimating that we now take 1.4 billion holidays a year, it’s harder than ever to find those unique shots that offer our friends, family and followers that never-before-seen shot.

We took Xperia 5 and its triple camera (housing 16mm, 26mm and 52mm lenses) on the road with us in Berlin, showcasing how to take pictures that differ from the norm.

Explore different cultures
When you visit a new city, there’s always the temptation to tick off all the usual sights and sounds that take pride of place in every tourist guidebook. But cities are made up of hundreds of different cultures, so why not explore lesser known areas to find new material to shoot.

Trinkets can make treasure
Impressive architectural sights can often make for good photographs, but it’s worth going on the hunt for eye-catching patterns and displays you see on the street. These colourful pompoms look like sea anemones climbing on top of one another!

(settings: Aperture: f /1.6; Exposure time: 1/200s; Flash: off; Focal length: 4.26mm; ISO: 64)

Lean in closer
Whether it’s spectacular street art that makes an immediate impression, or an everyday installation (think park benches, street lamps) that seems to stand out from the crowd, it’s worth trying different angles and lenses to nab the best shot. Here, we got in super close to capture the patterns in the metalwork, resulting in a mesmerising effect.

If all else fails, go back to nature
Those of you who read our guide on using optical zoom to capture nature photography will know that reflections can provide a rich source of material. Find hidden gardens and ponds and play with the composition until you find a stellar shot.

Keep your chin up
In this case, quite literally! Sometimes the best shots are to be found in the sky rather than on the ground. Here, we angled our Xperia 5 to take in as much of the structure of the building as possible, almost giving the effect of being in a transparent hot air balloon!

Power up your mobile gaming with Sony’s latest flagship smartphones

Power up your mobile gaming with Sony’s latest flagship smartphones

Improving your gaming skills takes time and plenty of practice. Even the best esports players dedicate as much time as possible to their chosen games and genres, whether they’re racing to take down the enemy turrets, playing 더킹플러스카지노 games, or looting and shooting in a battle royale PvP.

If you’ve been following Sony’s most recent announcements from IFA 2019, you will be familiar with the latest addition to the flagship smartphone family. Like Xperia 1 before it, the dazzling new Xperia 5 has a gorgeous 21:9 CinemaWide™ display offering a truly immersive entertainment experience that gives you a wider field of view and the upper-hand against your fellow gamers!

But that’s not all that Sony’s stunning flagships offer for gamers.

To really show off the handsets’ capabilities, Germany’s second biggest streamer on Twitch, Maximilian Stemmler (who goes by the alias ‘Trymacs’) and semi-pro Domenic Strobel, also known as Chefstrobel, went head-to-head in a Fortnite match on the Sony IFA booth. We caught up with them to see what they thought about the gaming features on the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5.

Power up your mobile gaming with Sony’s latest flagship smartphones

An exciting new feature for Xperia 5 is the exclusive wireless support for Sony’s DualShock 4 controller. Ideal for fans of Fortnite, gamers can link their Xperia 5 smartphone to their PlayStation 4 controller, allowing them to take the action wherever they go.

Chefstrobel said: “Having a DualShock controller means you have more control over your game and your aiming is on-point! It also means that the buttons which are usually on the display are removed so you can see even more of the action.”

Xperia 1 users needn’t fret – the feature will be coming to those handsets soon!

Trymacs added: “For me, it doesn’t feel like normal mobile gaming, particularly when using a controller. I’ve played on a tablet before, which is a bigger device, but you can actually see more of the map on Xperia 1 or 5 due to their 21:9 displays. It’s somewhere between mobile and console gaming but it’s great because you can practice on the go!”

Thanks to its clever technologies and the continued growth and popularity of Fortnite, both Chefstrobel and Trymacs mused over the possibility of developer Epic Games introducing a new tournament just for mobile players.

“There are so many games in the battle royale genre but Fortnite stands out because of the building feature,” said Chefstrobel. “So many top athletes play the game, so it’s encouraging for younger players to get into it.”

Trymacs added: “You can play with your friends for free no matter what device they are using. For example, you could be using an Xperia while your friend is playing on a PlayStation 4 Pro.”

The pair agreed that for any aspiring esports professional, having a phone with great gaming capabilities, such as Sony’s flagships, is crucial to ensure you can practice on-the-go.

But it’s not just the gorgeous graphics, 21:9 display and portability that make Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 gaming powerhouses.

Combining all your game data into one area, Sony’s Game enhancer was designed to truly enrich your gaming experience, no matter your level. Xperia 5 and Xperia 1 both come with the latest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 855 processor, helping to boost performance and speed in your device by allowing you to ramp up and release RAM depending on your needs.

What’s more, Game enhancer lets you turn off notifications for incoming calls and texts, disable the camera key or tweak settings to maximise battery life.

If you want to share your epic gaming moments, the handy app allows you to record your gameplay, face and commentary at the same time then upload to your favourite site. You can also play around with voice changer for a variety of vocal effects!

Found yourself stuck on a tricky level? Don’t rage quit – you can find tips for the game online without halting gameplay! The smartphones know which game you are playing and will display relevant tips on the side of the screen.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out Chefstrobel and Trymacs going head-to-head in Fortnite below:

Meet the Makers: The brains behind the sleek and stylish design of the new Xperia 5

Meet the Makers: The brains behind the sleek and stylish design of the new Xperia 5

When you first look at Xperia 5, you’ll notice just how striking it is. From its sleek, metal frame made from durable Corning® Gorilla® Glass 6, to its 21:9 CinemaWide™ 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display – it’s no wonder the media are going nuts for it!

Packing in most of the clever technologies found in Xperia 1, Xperia 5 is slightly smaller than its big brother at 158 x 68 x 8.2mm, and is the optimum fit for your hand. While the device may be smaller, it’s a multi-tasking powerhouse allowing users to split screen two windows with ease.

We wanted to find out more about how these bold handsets were designed and the inspiration behind them, so we chatted to the brains behind the flagship, Murai-san.

Xperia 5 comes in four striking colours. How did you choose the colours: Black, Grey, Blue and Red?

I carefully considered and created a plethora of colours and textures, playing around with them to decide which would fit the Xperia’s theme of “Flow of Light”, found in different variations across some of Sony’s other smartphones. We made a number of mock-ups to help us pick our favourite colours.

Finally, I selected the four bold colours we have today. There’s Black or Grey for a bold handset with a classic feel, and Blue or Red for a vibrant splash of colour.* These four shades match perfectly with the product concept and offer something for everyone.

Meet the Makers: The brains behind the sleek and stylish design of the new Xperia 5

What cultural and design references influenced you when designing Xperia 5?

“Flow of Light” was a key theme throughout the whole design process. I designed Xperia 5 based on this. We brought the texture to life by ensuring that the colour, material and finish nodded to the brightness of light that overflows in everyday life.

Let’s take the blue handset, for example. If you tilt the phone one way, you will see deep navy hues. Tilt it the other way and you’ll notice strokes of light flashing across the body. All four colours were designed to shift and alter depending on the environment and angle – exactly as real light does!

How did you manage to create a device that looks striking and yet is still incredibly durable?

Xperia 5 has a sleek, symmetrical round shape, making it both neat and beautifully geometric. Yet, it’s still reminiscent of Xperia’s classic and unique square silhouette.

By combining the side metal frame with the front and back glass panels, we could ensure a firm, rigid body which fits beautifully in your hand. This was achieved by shortening the width by 4mm compared to Xperia 1.

What makes this design stand out from other smartphones on the market?

Xperia 5 is truly unique. It maintains the immersive CinemaWide™ experience inherited from Xperia 1’s eye-popping 21:9 display, yet it feels beautifully balanced and offers a compact design for those wanting a smaller handset.

Can you talk us through the different manufacturing processes to make each colour? Especially blue vs red and grey vs black.

In order to realise the beautiful design, it is processed with transparent vapour deposition on the back of the glass. This might sound technical, but it’s essentially a piece of ‘film’ that gives the Xperia 5 a light texture and polished frame – it helped us to achieve the “Flow of Light” feeling.

For the blue handset, we opted for a mysterious tone and achieved this by making the transparent vapour deposition bright in blue. This sits on the front of the phone. For the back, we used a calm tone of solid blue.

This might surprise you but the red handset was also created using glass in a bright blue. We achieved the red by printing in a solid red shade in multiple layers using a high saturation. The finished product is a gorgeous rouge shade.

The grey has a soft and shiny hue. We made this by making the glass surface shine a little bit stronger, using a neutral colour and printing a warm, solid gray on the back surface of the glass.

The black was printed using the blackest ink. We didn’t add any extra elements to the glass. This was matched with the colour of the polished frame to create a solid, dark shade.
