  • The other 2018 nominees were Timothée Chalamet, Josh O’Connor, Florence Pugh and Tessa Thompson
  • Fellow BAFTA nominee and former EE Rising Star Award nominee, Margot Robbie, and BAFTA nominee, Octavia Spencer, presented this year’s award
  • Previous winners include Tom Holland, Jack O’Connell, Will Poulter, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Noel Clarke, Eva Green and James McAvoy

London, Sunday 18 February 2018: EE, the UK’s largest mobile operator and part of the BT Group, is proud to announce Daniel Kaluuya as the winner of the EE Rising Star Award in 2018.

The EE Rising Star Award is the only publicly-voted award presented at the EE British Academy Film Awards, and each year it continues to shine a spotlight on the outstanding up and coming acting talent that has captured the imagination of the public and film industry over the past 12 months.

Daniel was one of five exceptional actors nominated in recognition of their performances and identified as a true star in the making. The other nominees were Timothée Chalamet, Josh O’Connor, Florence Pugh and Tessa Thompson.

Daniel Kaluuya shot to fame last year in the American genre film, Get Out, for which he has been nominated in the Best Actor category for the EE British Academy Film Awards, Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Gotham Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards. Kaluuya took home the Best Actor award at the MTV Movie Awards and the NAACP Image Awards. Already known for his roles in hit TV shows, Skins, Psychoville and Black Mirror, Kaluuya has also starred in a slew of big screen feature films, including crime thriller Sicario, Johnny English Reborn and Kick Ass 2. This month, Daniel also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Ryan Coogler’s critically acclaimed Black Panther, followed by a co-starring role in Steve McQueen’s upcoming heist thriller Widows later this year.

Former 2015 EE Rising Star Award nominee Margot Robbie, who was also nominated for Best Actress for her role in I, Tonya, and Octavia Spencer, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Shape of Water, took to the Royal Albert Hall stage to present this year’s EE Rising Star award.

Mat Sears, Director of Communications and Sponsorship at EE, said: “Congratulations to Daniel Kaluuya for winning this year’s EE Rising Star Award. The standard of the nominees is always incredibly high, and it is testament to the calibre of this year’s performances and films that this year’s nominees have also been recognised in other award categories. We take great pride in our work with BAFTA, continuing to shine a spotlight on exceptional new talent and providing a public vote for film fans to show their support and have their say. As ever, the public has spoken and we are incredibly pleased for Daniel. We look forward to seeing his career continue to flourish.”

The EE Rising Star Award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen’s most memorable characters.

The jury who selected the five nominees from the hundreds suggested by BAFTA members featured a stellar line up of industry experts to choose the 2018 EE Rising Star Award shortlist. Once again chaired by producer, Marc Samuelson, the jury included British actress Georgina Campbell and film broadcaster, Edith Bowman, BAFTA award-winning director Philippa Lowthorpe; Murder on the Orient Express, Cinderella, Pirates of the Caribbean and Testament of Youth casting director, Lucy Bevan; renowned casting director for The Boy In Striped Pyjamas, Philomena, Layer Cake and The Constant Gardener, Leo Davis; esteemed producer of Bhaji on the Beach, Looking for Langston and Young Soul Rebels, Nadine Marsh-Edwards alongside leading film and arts journalists.

The EE Rising Star was voted for by the British public via the EE website. For more information on the EE Rising Star Award please visit: www.ee.co.uk/bafta

EE launches 4G home broadband antenna to connect more than 580,000 homes across the UK

  • EE trials new 4G antenna solution across the Northern Fells in Cumbria – providing rural homes with superfast broadband as fast as fibre for the first time
  • 4G antenna and professional installation service is available nationwide from today
  • With 4G coverage in more places than any other operator, EE could help 580,000 homes gain access to high speed connectivity
  • For the first time in the UK, customers can use EE’s new combined 4G and fixed broadband line checker, automatically suggesting the best home broadband connection for them

EE, part of BT Group, today unveiled a new 4G home broadband solution which could connect 580,000 homes across the UK, especially those in rural areas that are currently only able to access broadband slower than 10Mbps[1]. The service will provide customers with superfast broadband speeds at home using the power of EE’s 4G network. Customer trials in the Northern Fells area of Cumbria have delivered speeds of over 100Mbps.

EE’s new 4G home broadband, which combines the 4GEE Home Router with a powerful external antenna and professional installation service, has been designed specifically as an alternative for those in rural communities that have yet to be connected with traditional fixed line broadband access – or where customers can only receive slower fixed broadband speeds.

EE has recently been trialling the solution in the Northern Fells in Cumbria, an area with dramatic topography. Currently many homes in rural Cumbria can only get limited broadband access, and EE, working with the Northern Fells Broadband initiative has worked to trial the service with users in the area.

The new solution allows customers to access EE’s superfast 4G network which currently extends to 90% of the UK’s landmass (equal to more than 99.6% of UK homes). EE predicts that there are 580,000 homes with slow or no fixed line access which could benefit from the solution – with EE continuing to roll out 4G into new areas on the way to its ambition to extend 4G coverage to 95% of the UK geography.

Max Taylor, Managing Director of Marketing, EE said:

“As our network continues to expand into some of the most remote parts of the UK, we’ve seen the amazing impact that 4G connectivity can have on rural communities. Our newest 4G home broadband router and antenna takes this one step further, ensuring thousands of families in rural areas across the UK could enjoy the benefits of superfast broadband inside their home for the very first time – whether video-calling the grandparents or streaming their favourite TV series.”

Rory Stewart, MP for Penrith and The Border said:

“What EE is doing is transformative. One of the real challenges is getting fixed fibre into people’s houses because they are so sparsely populated in rural areas. The great thing about EE’s new solution though is that it’s wireless – allowing people to get superfast home broadband via 4G. As the number of new mobile masts continue to roll out, more and more areas of Cumbria will come online. With access to fast broadband, people’s lives really will be transformed”

Mal Hilton, Chairman, Northern Fells Broadband said:

“This new service from EE is going to help households in some of the most isolated areas of Cumbria; areas where residents simply cannot and may never receive fibre connectivity. It is going to radically change the lives of people in this community. With fast and reliable home internet for the very first time, they can now function like everybody else in the UK.”

Sarah Lee, Head of Policy at the Countryside Alliance, said:

“Fast and reliable internet is just as essential in the countryside as it is in urban areas, but unfortunately it is not currently as widely available. This is a major issue for everyday life at home – students rely on a decent internet for research, parents need to bank online and thousands of rural families are missing out on a wealth of on-demand entertainment. We welcome this innovative 4G solution from EE and believe it will have a big impact on some of the most remote communities across the UK.”

4GEE Home Router & Antenna

EE’s 4GEE Home Router uses a 4G mobile signal to provide home broadband – enabling thousands of additional rural homes across the UK to enjoy the benefits of superfast home internet. With no requirement for a landline, the 4GEE Home Router is ready to go straight from the box allowing up to 32 devices to connect to it at once. The new 4GEE Home Router is EE’s fastest own brand device with enhanced wi-fi strength, making it the perfect alternative to traditional fixed broadband.

EE’s new antenna is fitted to the side of a customer’s property by EE’s professional installation provider and is connected to the 4GEE Home Router situated inside the home by a cable. This eliminates any loss of signal due to thick exterior walls, improving both the speed and consistency of the 4GEE Home Router. The antenna has been designed for use on properties with good outdoor coverage but variable indoor coverage.

The 4GEE Home Router and antenna solution offers speeds as fast as most fixed line fibre broadband services – with trial speeds showing over 100Mbps in Cumbria. Separately, independent recognition has revealed EE offers the UK’s fastest 4G, with average download speeds above 30Mbps*.

New Combined Line Checker

EE has also today launched the UK’s first fixed and mobile broadband combined coverage checker – allowing customers to see which broadband solution is most suitable for them based on their postcode – whether that’s via a fixed line or over 4G.

Pricing and availability

Available from 9 February nationwide, customers can sign up to a 4GEE Home pay monthly plan with introductory packages from £35 to £60 which include the 4GEE Home Router. Customers can add on the antenna and arrange professional installation at a convenient time for a one-off payment of £100.

If the customer has an existing EE pay monthly phone plan or 12 month SIM only plan, EE will boost their phone’s monthly data allowance by an extra 5GB.

EE has received extensive independent recognition, including being ranked the UK’s best overall network by RootMetrics®, Best Network for five years in a row at the Mobile Choice Awards, and Fastest Network and Best Network Coverage at the 2017 uSwitch Mobile Awards.

EE trains thousands of customer service staff to help parents have ‘The New Talk’ with their children about internet safety

  • EE marks Safer Internet Day by rolling out training across 600 retail outlets
  • Thousands of EE customer service representatives will be equipped with new step by step guides on setting parental controls as new research from partner Internet Matters reveals that seven out of ten teens want parents to set filters to protect them online
  • EE has developed ‘The New Talk’ – a series of conversation starters to help parents talk with their children about staying safe online – with Internet Matters

EE, the UK’s largest mobile operator and part of BT Group, is marking Safer Internet Day with a nationwide rollout of specialist mobile and online safety training for thousands of customer service employees, as well as ‘The New Talk’, a series of conversation starters developed with Internet Matters to help parents talk with their children about staying safe online.

Rolling out to thousands of employees across 600 retail outlets, the training prepares EE’s customer service representatives to offer the best advice on safety options and filters as well as direct millions of parents across the UK to resources to help deal with difficult subjects like cyberbullying. The training has been made possible through a partnership with online safety experts Internet Matters.

EE acknowledges that parenting in the digital age is becoming increasingly tricky, with normal conversations on the ‘birds and the bees’ no longer being enough. As a result, EE has also collaborated with Internet Matters to develop ‘The New Talk’, a series of ‘conversation starters’ that cover the ‘snaps and the bytes’ aiming to provide parents with ways to talk with their children, broaching difficult topics relating to online safety.

Marc Allera, CEO of EE and BT’s consumer businesses, said: “We understand that parenting in the digital world can be a daunting job and, while many parents do discuss online safety with their children regularly, many device purchases are made without thinking about having the necessary ‘talk’. I am delighted that we’re training our customer service staff to support parents, like myself, to have ‘The New Talk on internet safety with their children – alongside support and advice on important issues such as online behaviour, safety and security.”

‘The New Talk’ conversation starters developed by EE and Internet Matters include:

  • Ask your children to tell you about the apps they like to use and how they like to use their mobile devices.
  • Ask them for advice on how they keep their photos and videos safe on their mobiles. What do they think is ok to share? What tips do they have?
  • Ask them if they know where to go for help if they are worried about their safety online. Do they know how to access privacy settings or how to report or block on the services they use?
  • Ask for their help in getting the most out of your mobile, what more could you be doing and what is safe to use?
  • Ask your children how you can get more out of mobile devices as a family.

CEO of Internet Matters Carolyn Bunting said: “With the rapid pace of technology, parents can often feel bewildered when it comes to understanding the latest devices, apps and gadgets. We’re delighted to be partnering with EE to offer practical one-to-one advice in store and answer any questions parents may have about their child’s online safety.”

These initiatives are in response to new findings from Internet Matters, revealing that seven out of ten teens want parents to set filters to protect them online, and form the second public commitment EE has made to working towards a safer internet since becoming a partner of Internet Matters in December – the first mobile network operator to do so.

Internet Matters ambassador and psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos said: “A combination of knowing how to set parental controls and having regular conversations with your child about their digital world are both key to keeping them safe online.”

Internet Matters is a non-for-profit organisation, founded in 2014, which has been backed by some of the UK’s biggest internet providers including BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, in the first industry coalition of its kind. EE is joining the organisation to help provide mobile expertise, and to help Internet Matters share the latest online safety advice with even more parents and children across the UK.
