Whether you take a dip in the pool with your phone in your trunks or drop your mobile down the loo, accidental water damage is a complete pain in the rear and has been known to cause irreversible damage to phones. Stats from 2016 show that 11% of smartphones are ruined because of water each year across Western Europe. And every day, more than 100,000 smartphones are damaged by quick dips in sinks, toilets and pint glasses. Uh-oh.
In fact, water damage is the second most common reason our smartphones get wrecked, coming second to broken or cracked screens. So, what can we do about it? Well, apart from taking more care (which less face it is hard to do when we’re leading such hectic lives and checking Facebook on the loo is often the only opportunity we get) there’s always Three Rescue. Insurance is fab, and it’s an absolute must for all of us when we have expensive devices that we use day in, day out. But shouldn’t we be preventing the problem in the first place? As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. And that’s where the latest smartphones come in. Because Samsung, Sony, iPhone, Honor, Huawei, LG (the list goes on…) all have what it takes to make water worries a thing of the past.
How do you know whether your phone is waterproof?
Today’s mobiles are generally water-resistant with an IP rating of 67 or 68. IP stands for ‘Ingress Protection’ and IP ratings are used to define levels of a gadget’s resistance to things like dust, dirt and moisture. The first number following the IP lets you know how resistant an object is to solids, like dust, while the second number relates to its resistance to liquids, like water.
IP68 is the highest rating you can get when it comes to protecting your phone from foreign objects, so the Samsung range are really hitting the mark. A rating of 6 implies the object is dust tight (6 is the maximum) and it won’t allow any dust in, while the 8 for liquid is measured from 0-8 (with 8 being the maximum) so the phone is protected against submersion in water for 30 minutes), at a depth of up to 1.5 metres.

Okay, okay they’re officially known as water-resistant devices, but some of them are so good they’re being hailed as waterproof. Years ago, it would have been game over if you dropped your phone down the loo – especially if you didn’t have mobile insurance – but now, it doesn’t have to spell ‘the end’. Waterproof Android phones.

If you’re an iPhone lover, don’t fret. iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have an IP67 rating which means they’re water-resistant up to 1 metre, or approximately 3 feet, and all the later models (the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, iPhone 9, 9 Plus and iPhone X) are waterproof iPhones.
