Why everyone’s going crazy for Fortnite

There’s a new game in town, and it’s taking the world by storm – literally! If you’ve not heard of the new sensation that is Fortnite, we’d be surprised. The exciting new Battle Royale game has been smashing the gaming world and the media market, and with a new move to mobile gaming, we think it’s well worth a look.

What actually is Fortnite?

Fortnite is a new competitive co-op survival video game that has both a career mode and a free-to-play Battle Royale experience. Take 99 real players, put them all into a cartoon online world and strip them of everything except the clothes on their backs and a trusty pickaxe. Then, it’s a fight to be the last man standing. With loot drops of weaponry and gadgets, and the opportunity to build fortresses and defences to protect yourself, it’s unsurprising that chaos soon ensues. Add to that an ever-encroaching storm closing the play area and eliminating players, and you’ve got yourself a perfect idea of what Fortnite: Battle Royale is all about. Sounds fun, right?

Why’s it so popular?

It’s probably got something to do with the fact that Fortnite: Battle Royale is free! Who doesn’t love free things? The game can be downloaded from either the Xbox store, PlayStation store or on Steam for the grand total of £0.00.
And, being the first in recent times to create a 1v99 experience (beating Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds to release by just a few months), gamers across the globe have been drawn into its fun, cartoony action and fast-paced gameplay. Streamers across platforms like Twitch and Mixer have gained thousands of followers and are making money from their success. We even heard that you can apply to be a Fortnite coach and earn some money by teaching new players (affectionately known as ‘newbs’ or ‘noobs’) how to be better at the game.
And now, the celebrities of the world are getting involved. On 15 March, Canadian rapper Drake took part in a Twitch stream of Fortnite and around 635,000 people tuned in to watch his team fight for Victory Royale. That’s roughly the population of Australia’s Gold Coast! During the stream, Drake also confirmed his love for pineapple on pizza, which had plenty of Fortnite fans debating the age-old argument. The jury’s still out here at Three…

What’s next?

The biggest recent announcement is that Fortnite is now available on mobile! Featuring invite-only exclusivity, the game has already rocketed to the top of the iOS and Android charts for game downloads. It’s the perfect format for a quick lunch break adventure. And, if mobile gaming is your thing, Fortnite on mobile twinned with the 120Hz screen of a Razer phone is a dream combination. You can make sure you spot those all-important loot chests and get ahead of your competition with the best quality graphics mobile gaming can offer. You don’t need to worry about running out of power either, so you can battle on from dawn until dusk. Plus, if you’re worried about what all that looting and storming’s gonna do to your delicate data allowance, then you could do a lot worse than taking a peek at our other plans, to find one that really suits your gaming needs.
