So, what is smart home security?
Chances are, you already know that you can control stuff like your lights and heating using a smart home hub or through an app on your phone.
But, that’s not all. There’s a whole range of smart accessories that you can connect wirelessly and use to protect your home.
You can put off any would-be intruders by scheduling your lights/TV/music to come on at certain times while you’re away, making it look like you’re at home (without needing to copy Kevin McCallister’s Home Alone Christmas party setup…).
There are loads of complete smart home security systems and starter packs out there but, the beauty of a smart home is that it can be customised to suit you.
If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve done some of the leg work for you and have put together some info on some of the more important parts of a smart home security system, to help you decide on how to set up your own.
Smart home hubs
First things first, you’ll need a smart home hub. This is the all-important centre of your smart home and lets you control each of your smart accessories.
From your smart home hub, you can schedule when you want stuff to happen, like the lights being switched on at a certain time or the heating coming on in time for you arriving home.
Most smart home hubs also have an app that you can use instead, even when you’re not home.
Cameras
The easiest way to check out what’s happening at home when you’re not there is by using cameras and video surveillance installation.
Why pick a smart camera over a standard CCTV though? Well, not only will a smart camera record what’s going on when you’re not around, you can check a live stream straight from your phone and either watch it there and then or save to watch later.
With many smart cameras now offering features like facial recognition, two-way talk, night vision and even making sounds to scare off any intruders, they should definitely be on your smart home security system shopping list. You may check out this resource to find out more.
Smart sensors
Next up are smart sensors; they’re one of the most important parts of your security system. If any sensors that you’ve placed on your windows, doors or anywhere else around your home are triggered, this will set off your alarm and will send a notification to let you know that it’s picked something up.
Alarms
Visible burglar alarms are known to be a good way of putting off any would-be intruders so, adding them into your smart home security system is a good idea. If the alarm is triggered, it’ll send a notification to you and any other nominated family or friends, to let you know what’s happened. You can control the alarm using the app, turning it off or on as you need to.
Smart plugs
Setting up a smart home can be pricey. If you’re on budget, smart plugs might be the cheapest and easiest ways to do it. They’re reasonably priced and all you need to do is plug them into a normal plug socket and they’ll make any appliances you plug into them ‘smart’.
While you can’t use them to control your main lights, if you use them with lamps, you can schedule them to come on at certain time of day – perfect for making it look like you’re at home.
