We’ve got some great news for fans of the XperiaTM Touch: thanks to a new software upgrade1, it’s just become even more interactive.

The Xperia Touch
The Xperia Touch turns any flat surface into an HD Touchscreen

Amazing new Remote Controller gestures available on some of the most popular music and video apps mean you have more ways to control your content from the comfort of your sofa simply by using your hand.

For those of you who are yet to get your hands on the Xperia Touch, there’s never been a better time to get involved in the action. Thanks to Sony’s innovative SXRD projection display technology, you can turn any flat surface into a HD touchscreen, meaning you can enjoy games, video and chatting with friends on social media in any room you wish!

To begin using the new gestures, you’ll first need to open your chosen app using existing Pointer gestures that allow you to activate a tracking session, click an app/item, drag and drop as well as mute or unmute your device.

As Xperia Touch users will already know, this is super simple! To begin your tracking session, hold your index finger to the Xperia Touch (keep it steady!) for at least one second. You can then use the same finger to point to your desired app, as shown here:

To click the app, briefly touch your thumb and index finger together and separate them to complete the action.

Once your app is open and your content selected, you can begin using the brilliant, brand new gestures that allow you to use your hand as a remote control.

When you show the flat of your hand to the Xperia Touch, a control panel will pop up like so:

You can then move your hand up, down, left and right to move to the menu icon you would like to select. To make a selection from the menu, grip your hand together to make a fist.

From the Control Panel, you can mute or unmute your content, turn the volume up or down, pause and play. You can also tap to return to the Home screen, or keep your fist balled up while on the Home icon to activate Google Voice.

The fist rule also lends the skip icons a second function. The ‘skip back’ icon can be tapped to skip backwards on your content, or held to rewind, while the ‘skip forward’ icon can be held to fast-forward.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the range for gesture control is 50o from the camera, and you must position yourself 1m-4m from the camera for your gestures to be detected. Make sure there is some ambient lighting in the room, as your hand cannot be detected if it is completely dark.

Those who already use the Xperia Touch’s Pointer gestures to control the interactive projector might be wondering how to switch between control modes. It’s super easy! Simply lower your hand to change between Pointer gestures and Remote Controller gestures.
