Chaotic Party Game Marooners Available Now on Xbox One

Me and my brother Matt have always shared a love of competitive multiplayer games… even though only one of us can win them. Our first games were multiplayer, and we just kept going. Marooners started life as a Global Game Jam entry, which won the National Jury and Audience Award in the Netherlands.

Marooners has a classic formula: chase treasure and beat up your friends in a dangerous environment. But we spiced it up by switching to a different mini-game unpredictably so that you need to stay on your toes (or stand on your opponent’s).

We’ve packed Marooners with 25 different mini-games and arenas, set in locations from frozen snowfields to lily-pad covered lakes and burning pools of lava. Some of the most fun we had in development was creating these settings and seeing them come to life! We obviously took a lot of inspiration from various famous adventure movies (why yes, we do have a game mode where you must flee ahead of a huge boulder), but much of it is original and simply inspired by our own observations of the natural world. Our light-hearted cartoon style made it easy for us to try all kinds of different decorations and mini-games.

This love of variety also led to us creating several characters to choose from, along with an incredible 70+ weapons to discover. As well as all the typical stuff like swords, clubs, and axes we also let our imaginations run wild to come up with anything that might be amusing to harass your friends with. And so, we’ve got toilet brushes, flags, balloons, toothbrushes, and even broccoli! To make sure you can really create a unique character we also added the option to pick colors for your clothing and weapons.

We even found a solution to that old problem of gathering enough friends on your couch for a full game! You can mix local and online players, so that you can play with three friends on your couch and find more online: the best of both worlds! Or you can just add in some bots to make up the numbers – they enjoy any game mode and are 99% guaranteed not to rage-quit.

We’re looking forward to seeing you online!

Innovative Platformer Dandara Available Now on Xbox One

Hello Xbox gaming friends! We’re Long Hat House, the developers of the upcoming metroidvania and hopefully smash-hit success game Dandara. Our publisher Raw Fury and friends at Xbox offered us the chance to connect with you and write this post in celebration of the upcoming launch on Xbox One X and Xbox One, so we figured we’d do this interview-style and give you a little background on who we are.

Who are you guys?

We’re four guys from Belo Horizonte in Brazil: Lucas Mattos, João Brant, Thommaz Kauffmann, and Victor Leão. We’ve been working on Dandara for a little over two years, and thankfully not too burnt out yet. We found we all shared a passion for things like computer science, art, music, narrative, and of course video games, so we decided to try our hand at making some. After participating in a few game jams, we felt like that we had so much more to offer and do, so we made Long Hat House.

Who is Dandara and why make a game about her?

Heh, we should probably get this out up front: our game isn’t exactly “about” the real Dandara, but more of an homage or tribute to her. Dandara was an Afro-Brazilian woman who lived during the 17th century. Her background is mostly mysterious and informed by stories handed down across generations, but it is very inspiring. She was a hero to her people, having fought many battles to defend her people and runaway slaves from conquerors and fellow tribesmen who sought to concede. It is said that she was a master of capoeira, a form of martial arts with Afro-Brazilian roots, and that she refused to accept any deal that did not work toward am absolute end to slavery.

Our game’s heroine is an inspiration born from these stories, as a warrior seeking to end oppression in the mystical world of Salt. We wanted to create a game that talked about freedom in a world that borrowed a lot of influence from our hometown, and the inspiration we got from the stories of Dandara fit perfectly. Much of the artwork you can see in the world of Salt comes from Belo Horizonte, and we wanted to share that with gamers who may not have ever been to Brazil. Finally, as fans of the metroidvania-style of games, we wanted to make an easy to move, fast-paced action platformer that could play smoothly on both a controller and on touch devices, which gave us the idea for Dandara’s unique method of moving through only jumps.

What are some of your favorite memories while making the game?

We all share an interest in philosophy and art, so a lot of our late nights end up discussing life itself. We’ve gotten to know each other very well over the last few years because of this, and have become very strong friends. We also all got the opportunity to attend Stugan 2017 which is an indie game development retreat in Sweden. This was an incredible chance for us to immerse ourselves in a different environment while making friends and networking with other creative indie developers, sharing ideas that ended up making their way into the game right then and there.

Got any advice for people who want to make games?

The most important thing is to find a strong team that you connect with; you will come to rely on their input and feedback quite often. Be sure that you are honest with your team and yourself, about your ideas, thoughts, critiques, and feelings. Try not to let ego get in the way of making a game that others will find fun and enjoyable. And always try to raise the bar, for yourself and for your teammates, so that you’re always challenging yourselves to do better and try harder.

Thank you so much for letting us have the chance to share our story with you, and we hope to see you all again when Dandara launches February 6 on Xbox One.

Play Rainbow Six Siege Free Next Weekend on Xbox One

If you haven’t yet joined the growing throngs of Rainbow Six Siege players, you’ll be able to jump in for free on Xbox One next weekend.

Starting 12:01 a.m. PST on Thursday, February 15, the free weekend is a chance to join high-stakes tactical team battles until Sunday, February 18 at 10:59 p.m. PST. During that time, you’ll get access to the full range of content and progression available in the Standard Edition. The free weekend is a fantastic opportunity to see how far the game has come after two years of updates and expansions, and it’s also a chance to start sharpening your skills before the start of Year 3. The new year of content begins March 6 with the launch of Season One, dubbed Operation Chimera, an expansion that adds two new Operators and a completely new four-week co-op event.

In Outbreak, a team of three Operators need to work together to battle through mutant hordes in the infested town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Appropriately, Operation Chimera’s two new Operators – from France and Russia – are biohazard experts, and in addition to being playable in all regular modes, they’re selectable alongside Smoke, Ying, Buck, Kapkan, Ash, Glaz, Tachanka, Doc, and Recruit in Outbreak, which runs from March 6 to April 3.

That’s just the start of what’s in store for Year 3. Season Two adds two new Italian Operators, along with a map set in Italy, while Season Three brings UK and US Operators along with a map makeover and redesign. Season Four will add a Morocco map, as well as two new Moroccan Operators. The maps will be free to all players at launch, while new Operators are available exclusively to Season Pass owners for a limited time, then unlockable by all players using R6 Credits or Renown (Siege’s earned in-game currency).

If you’re still not sure whether Rainbow Six Siege’s uniquely tense, tactical FPS matches are for you, next weekend will be a zero-risk chance to find out. You can get started by downloading Rainbow Six Siege from the Microsoft Store when the trial period begins on February 15.

Ancestors Legacy - Battle Prayers

Ancestors Legacy – Battle Prayers

Ancestors Legacy - Battle Prayers

We wanted to picture something intimate, personal. Prayers were very popular in medieval times, especially for the nations presented in Ancestors Legacy. Those were warriors who lived to conquer, so whether they were Christians or pagans, they all needed deities to pray to when the battle was upon them. And that’s what we aimed for – not a prayer from an old prayer-book, but rather words that people use when they try to “talk” to their higher powers. When they get personal with whatever it is they believe in.
