The wait is over. The new iPhone is here

2020 has just got better.

Apple’s finally announced this year’s new iPhone series and, it’s been well worth the wait. Register your interest today.

Introducing iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max – a stellar line-up if ever we saw one. And they’re all 5G Ready.

Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting new iPhone range.

iPhone 12

Coming in at 6.1 inches, iPhone 12 sounds like it’s going to be the same size as iPhone 11. But that’s not the case. It’s 11% thinner, 15% smaller, and 16% lighter.

Sporting a brand-new design with Aerospace-grade aluminium edges, glass back, and 5 new colours, iPhone 12 looks awesome. It’s tougher than ever too, thanks to Ceramic Shield. Using a formula exclusive to Apple, nano-ceramic crystals have been added to the glass screen making it the toughest ever used in a smartphone. And that means a 4x better drop performance compared to iPhone 11.

And it’s not just tough. The new Super Retina XDR display is pixel perfect. Literally. With better colour accuracy and a higher pixel density of 2532×1170 at 460 ppi – it’s the best iPhone display ever. It looks amazing.

iPhone 12 performance

Last year’s industry-leading A13 Bionic chip couldn’t be beaten.

Until now.

Enter the new A14 Bionic chip – the first smartphone chip ever to be built on 5nm. With the new 5G capabilities, the iPhone 12 range needed a more advanced chip and that’s exactly what A14 Bionic is.

With up to 50% faster CPU and GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine for up to 70% faster machine learning – A14 Bionic is incredible. It makes the stuff like Smart HDR3, Deep Fusion, and Dolby Vision video possible.

And this year’s iPhone series will run iOS 14 straight out of the box.

5G just got real

The wait’s finally over. The new iPhone range announced on 13 October is 5G Ready. And Apple’s gone big. iPhone 12’s got more 5G bands than any other smartphone. That means you get 5G in more places than ever. All that on the network that’s building the UK’s fastest 5G – sounds like the perfect combination to us.

iPhone 12 camera

There’s a new dual camera system for iPhone 12. Made up of a 12MP Ultra Wide camera with 120-degree field of view and a 12MP Wide camera with f/1.6 aperture. Add Night mode into the mix – which is available on all the cameras now, and you get awesome low-light photography capabilities.

There’s an improvement of up to 27% when it comes to low-light photography compared with iPhone 11, which is impressive.

Deep Fusion

Deep Fusion is all about capturing the tiny details. Available on all cameras, it works in the same way as HDR, using the Neural Engine to analyse multiple images at different exposures. In low to mid light, it combines those shots to give you the best image possible.

Smart HDR3

Using that faster machine learning that we mentioned earlier, Smart HD3 recognises scenes and adjusts your photo. It refines shadows and highlights and keeps colours and details like skin tone, as true to life as possible.

What about the front camera?

The 12MP TrueDepth camera doesn’t miss out on any of those new features either. With Night mode, Deep Fusion and HDR3 all available. Selfies have never looked so good.

Introducing Dolby Vision video

This is huge.

iPhone 12 is the first camera ever to record 4K HDR video with Dolby Vision up to 30 fps – frames per second. That’s something not even film industry cameras can do.

It can now capture 10-bit video with a ginormous 700 million colours. And to top it off, you can edit those movie quality videos on your iPhone and watch or share them too.

When can I pre-order iPhone 12?

You can pre-order your iPhone 12 from 16 October 2020. Register your interest today to get pre-order and pricing details as soon as they’re available.

The new iPhone 12 mini

Want a smaller phone but don’t want to compromise when it comes to great specs and features? With the new iPhone 12 mini, you don’t have to.

It’s got a compact 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display. But that’s the only difference. You get the same new design, colours and amazing specs, just in a smaller package. That makes iPhone 12 mini the world’s smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G phone.

When can I pre-order iPhone 12 mini?

iPhone 12 mini will be available to pre-order from 6 November 2020. Register your interest today to get pre-order and pricing details as soon as they’re available.

iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max

The 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, share the same Super Retina XDR display, and Ceramic Shield as the iPhone 12.

They’ve got a brand-new design, too. With surgical-grade stainless steel edges, a matte glass back, an edge-to-edge display, and 4 new colours: Pacific Blue, Gold, Silver, and Graphite.

LiDAR scanner

LiDAR’s used to measure how long it takes for light to reflect back from different objects. And the LiDAR scanner on iPhone 12 Pro uses that info to create a depth map of the space you’re in. This gives you an ultra-fast and accurate AR experience.

It takes the iPhone 12 Pro camera to a completely different level. We’re talking autofocus that’s up to 6 times faster and Night mode portraits with perfectly blurred backgrounds.

Pro 12MP camera

Both iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max share the Pro 12MP camera system made up of Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto cameras. There are a couple of differences though.

The Wide camera on iPhone 12 Pro has an aperture of f/1.6 that captures up to 27% more light. It also uses a new OIS – Optical Image Stabilisation to keep your images clear and sharp. It does that by making adjustments to the Wide camera a huge 5,000 times a second.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 47% bigger sensor making it up to 87% better in low-light conditions. And that sensor needs something more than OIS.

Enter sensor-shift OIS.

This type of tech was only available in DSLR cameras, but Apple’s adapted it for iPhone. It moves the sensor, keeping it steady to give you perfectly clear images and video.

When it comes to the new Telephoto camera, iPhone 12 Pro has a 4x optical zoom.

And the iPhone 12 Pro Max, has a 5x optical zoom – perfect for capturing that close-up detail.

Dolby Vision video

This exceptional new feature’s available on iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, too. But of course, the Pro version goes a step further. You can shoot 4K Dolby Vision video up to 60fps. It’s epic.

You can also edit, watch, and share your movie quality videos on your iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apple ProRAW – coming soon

When you’re taking pro-level shots with your iPhone, it makes sense to edit them like a pro too. And Apple ProRAW does just that. It combines the flexibility of shooting RAW shots with Apple’s computational photography. You can then edit your photo directly in the Apple photo app or in your favourite pro editing app.

When can I pre-order iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max?

iPhone 12 Pro will be available to pre-order from 16 October and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available to pre-order from 6 November 2020. Register your interest today to get pre-order and pricing details as soon as they’re available.

Getting started with vlogging

Vlogging aka video blogging has become hugely popular. From fitness journeys and make-up tutorials to unboxing videos – you can vlog about pretty much anything that takes your fancy.

Want to start your own YouTube channel or to become the next IGTV sensation but don’t know where to begin?

Our Discovery team put together this video, covering everything from equipment and editing to building your brand.

Setting up

You don’t need to buy specialist kit to start your vlog. Your phone or tablet can do the job perfectly. And because you’ve nearly always got them to hand, you can capture content whenever and wherever you want.

With phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra, you can shoot in 8K and edit your video on the go.

And with iPhones and iPads, the iMovie app makes editing your videos easy. Need some help to get started? Have a look at our Discovery video on how to use iMovie.

If you want to give your vlog a more polished look, a tripod and some lighting can make all the difference. They’re reasonably cheap to pick up too, which is a bonus. But if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, you can improvise with stuff you’ve got at home.

Filming

When it comes to capturing your footage, there are a couple of things you should consider.

Try out different types of shot

Different types of shot or angle like wide-angle, medium, and extreme close-up can help to keep your viewers engaged. Give them all a try and see what works best.

The next thing to consider is where your subject is in the shot. Use the grid in your camera app to make sure they’re well positioned. Try putting them in the centre or in one of the outer thirds – that gives you space for things like overlays.

Location, location, location

Make sure you’re filming somewhere quiet, where you won’t have any interruptions. You don’t want background noise distracting from your content.

It’s also worth investing in a lapel mic to make sure your audio is crystal clear.

Where to post your vlog

So, you’ve got your video and have edited it to perfection. You just need to decide where to publish it. IGTV is a great place to start – you’ve probably already got the Instagram app on your phone any way. And making the leap from stories to IGTV is easy.

Or you can go all in and set up a YouTube channel.

And if you’re serious about starting the vlogging life, it’s a good idea to think about building your brand. How do you want your channel to look?

Canva’s a great free app that can help you out with that. And you don’t have to be a design pro to use it either. There are loads of templates to choose from for logos and social content. But you can try your hand at creating stuff from scratch too.

It’s also worth checking out YouTube Studio. Use it for everything from editing video thumbnails, scheduling publish dates and even stuff like tracking insights and analytics.

Want some more tips on how to edit videos or want to try your hand at stuff like stop motion animation? Our Discovery team have videos on it all – go check them out on YouTube.

Top tips for your small business: How to improve cashflow in your business

It’s been a crazy year so far. So, it may come as no surprise that the UK is in its first recession for 11 years. Many people have been furloughed or lost jobs as companies close or downsize. And there’s a sense of ‘limbo’, as people watch the latest Coronavirus stats and decide how to bullet-proof their futures.

In times like this, small businesses are often hit hard. A recent Simply Business survey found that Coronavirus has cost the average small business in the UK over £11,000. Customer spend is at an all-time low, so you may find yourself with less cashflow than ever before. But having access to money is vital.

We’ve teamed up with our Three Means Business partner, FreshBooks, to give you advice on improving cashflow in your business.

How to improve cash flow in your business

Manage expectations with clients from day 1

Don’t be afraid to draw up a Pay Monthly before you start work. You might want to lay out your payment terms at this stage too.

Build a strong client relationship

Make regular contact so that the lines of communication don’t break down. And keep customers updated, so they feel part of the project.

Know who’s responsible for paying

Knowing your key contact will save a lot of time if/when you need to chase up an outstanding invoice.

Carefully craft your invoice terms

Be polite, don’t use jargon, and be totally upfront about when you expect to be paid. Implementing late payment fees is also a good idea.

Send invoices on time

The sooner you invoice your clients, the sooner they’ll pay you. So, don’t delay when you’ve delivered on a project.

Be crystal clear with your description of work

Don’t use any unnecessary jargon and make sure your client is clear about what they’re being billed for. This will prevent any misunderstandings.

Improve cashflow by accepting online payments

Online payment processing is vital right now. If you’re a FreshBooks customer, you can set yourself up to be paid online with a single click.

Automate your follow-ups

It can take some time for invoices to be paid, so you need to keep track of what’s due. FreshBooks will handle the client follow-ups so you can concentrate on running your business.

Three Means Business gives you a helping hand

With Three Means Business plans, you  can get up to £500 worth of benefits from specially picked partners, including 6 months’ free subscription to FreshBooks. This cloud accounting service is packed full of features, designed to streamline and automate your accounting and admin.

With the FreshBooks app on your phone or tablet it’s convenient and easy to stay on top of the important stuff. Track invoices, check cashflow, and access all the features that help your business run smoothly, wherever you go. FreshBooks is completely secure and designed to help you spend less time on accounting and more time doing the work you love.

Support for small businesses during the pandemic

Wherever you are in the UK, make sure you look at the government support for small businesses to help get you through Coronavirus.

Support the NHS with the new Test and Trace app

Support the NHS with the new Test and Trace app

Today, the NHS in England and Public Health Wales launched their brand new COVID-19 app. It’s the latest tool in the battle against Coronavirus and in protecting those we love and our wider communities. And the more people who download it, the more effective it is.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said, ‘“…There is no silver bullet when it comes to stopping the spread of Coronavirus, but today’s launch marks an important step forward in our fight against this invisible killer and I urge everyone who can, to download and use the app to protect themselves and their loved ones.”

We want to show our support by zero-rating the data when you use the app. So, you can use it as much as you want, without it affecting your allowance.

The app is designed and tested by experts from Apple, Google and the UK Government. Download it today from Google Play or the App Store.

What the app can do

  • It allows you to check in through a QR code while you’re going about your daily activities. From today, all businesses are legally required to display posters showing QR codes.
  • It’ll alert you if you’ve been in contact with someone who tests positive for Coronavirus. You’ll be asked to isolate to protect those around you and to save lives.
  • It gives you a list of the Coronavirus symptoms and an option to book a test at the nearest test centre.
  • It helps the NHS identify if the virus is spreading in a certain area. And it can warn you about the risk level in your own postcode.

Plus, it’s totally anonymous. No-one will have access to any details or be able to identify who or where an app user is.

How to use the app

Trace Alert Check-in Symptoms Test Isolate

How it works

The app technology

The app uses Bluetooth Low Energy with the smartphone’s own ‘Exposure Logging’ feature. It’ll detect if a person has been near another user who was tested positive with Coronavirus.

Alerting others

Any app user who has tested positive for Coronavirus can choose to alert other users. A random and unique ID will then be used to notify those who were in close contact with that person. This means that the privacy and identity of all users is protected.

In this together

Every contact that the app traces will help stop the spread of Coronavirus and save lives.

Scotland and Northern Ireland apps

If you live in Scotland, make sure you check out the Protect Scotland app page. It’s also got links to download the app through Google Play and the App Store.

For Northern Ireland, take a look at the StopCOVID NI Mobile App page. You can also download the app and start using it straight away.

Right now, our zero-rating only applies to the NHS COVID-19 app in England and Wales. However, we’re also speaking to the governments in Scotland and Northern Ireland about their national apps. We’ll update you with any changes.
