EE has announced a new in-store ‘Sleep Coaching’ service to mark the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Ring, which features advanced sleep quality tracking technology. The complimentary service will be available to all customers on Monday 5th August 2024 at EE’s Digital Spa in the EE Studio, Westfield London, White City, with Dr Sophie Bostock (“The Sleep Scientist”).
Guests will receive one-on-one consultations on their nightly regimes, alongside a bespoke plan to get a better night’s sleep. Customers are invited in store on the day to book in for their free sleep session in the Digital Spa, available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Situated in the EE Studio, the Digital Spa features guided meditations and an immersive sensory room, giving shoppers a moment to relax and recharge.
The introduction of ‘EE Sleep Coaching’ arrives at a timely moment, as new research from EE today uncovers that 83% of adults have difficulty sleeping at least once a week, with 25% having up to 4 bad night’s sleep per week.
Brits wake up on average 3h:30mins into their sleep, with adults waking up twice per night on average. Sunday, the day of “Sunday Scaries” setting in, was voted as the night adults typically get the worst sleep.
Although 85% of adults would like to get the recommended 7+ hours, in practice, fewer than half of adults (49%) get this much sleep during the working week. As a result, only 12% of us are ‘very satisfied’ with our sleep quality, leaving almost 9 out of 10 adults with room for improvement, with Brits catching an average of only 5 hours of Zzzs during a typical work night.
The results showed that on average women would prefer a little more sleep than men – an extra 11minutes – which is consistent with recent findings* that women have a slightly greater sleep need. Women are also less satisfied with the quality of their sleep with 1 in 4 men and 1 in 3 women saying they are ‘very/quite dissatisfied’ with their sleep.
The most common reason blamed for getting in the way of getting some proper shut-eye was “stress, worries or a racing mind”, especially for women (54% vs. 38% for men). Almost 1 in 5 cited financial strain (18%), which increased to 1 in 4 for 35-44s (25%).
Only 12% of adults say that they are very confident that they know what to do to improve their sleep – leaving many of us uncertain about what really works. Almost 1 in 5 adults (18%) already use a sleep tracker, and another 39% of adults would be interested in trying one.
Dr Sophie Bostock “The Sleep Scientist” comments: “With many experiencing poor sleep at least once a week, and almost 9 out of 10 Brits have an opportunity to build their confidence to improve sleep quality, I’ve teamed up with EE to help explain how using devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Ring can be used to gather vital insights about pro sleep habits, such as sleep consistency, or getting active each day, to help plan a better night’s sleep.”
Alistair Wilson, Partnerships Director, EE, added: “Samsung’s new Galaxy Ring brings AI-powered health experiences to our customers, providing data on energy levels, personalised health insights and even how to get a better night’s sleep. Available for all to purchase outright, or for EE mobile customers to add to their plan – it’s another example of how EE is helping make consumers everyday better.”
Dr Sophie Bostock has provided her top tips for a better night’s sleep:
1. Get out of bed at the same time as often as you can. This will help keep your internal body clocks, or circadian rhythms in sync, which means your body running is efficiently. Sleep trackers (such as the Samsung Galaxy Ring) do a great job of letting you know how consistent your sleep patterns are.
2. Bright light sends a powerful alerting signal to a master clock in the brain. Get outside within the first hour of waking to banish lagging melatonin and feel energised.
3. Get physically active every day to build up sleep pressure. Move your body in a way that feels good to you. All sorts of different types of exercise have been found to improve sleep quality, from yoga or tai chi to more vigorous cardio exercise.
4. Take time to process thoughts and emotions before you get ready for bed. Many of us are kept awake by a mind racing with thoughts we haven’t had time to process during the day. Experiment with writing a daily journal to download your thoughts to paper a few hours before you get ready for bed.
5. Make time to be, not do. Many of us rush through the day at 100mph, relying on stress hormones to fuel the constant demands on our attention. When it comes to bedtime, we’re stuck in a state of vigilance, or hyper arousal. We need to practice the skill of relaxation. Practicing breathwork, mindfulness or relaxation techniques during the day will make it easier to relax at night.
