Are You Making This Top Tracker Mistake? Here’s How to Stop

Woman practicing memory techniques so she doesn't forget her Fitbit tracker.

How many times have you arrived somewhere, looked down at your wrist to check your steps and realized you accidentally left your Fitbit device at home?

It’s something Fitbit firmware engineer, Andre Bertomeu, has seen happen to his family members. “I noticed they’ll forget about their device when charging it or if it dies before they have a chance to charge it,” he says. “So it will either sit dead or sit on the charger for days on end. Then it gets shoved around during cleaning or whatever until they leave and say, ‘darn, I forgot my Fitbit tracker at home’.”

Forgetting to wear your tracker every once in awhile may not seem like a big deal, but University of Washington researchers found that it’s actually one of the top causes of activity-tracking lapses. These lapses can lead to incomplete records, which, the study authors write, “can ultimately lead people to abandon [activity tracking].” And if less activity tracking leads to a decrease in healthy behaviors, your forgetfulness may get worse.

“It’s kind of ironic,” says Gary Small, MD, director of the UCLA Longevity Center at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior, because the activity Fitbit devices can inspire will help a person’s memory. His research has found that healthy lifestyle interventions—like diet, exercise, and learning memory techniques—can improve brainpower and cognitive performance within two weeks (the full program is outlined in his book 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain).

Below, Small shares six of those research-proven strategies to help you boost your overall brain health—and never forget your Fitbit tracker again.

3 Memory Techniques—Plus Other Ways to Help a Forgetful Brain

Create a Memory Habit
Do you keep your floss next to your toothbrush so you remember to use it? Or your vitamins near the breakfast table? Think about when and where you tend to take off your tracker and then use the same memory strategy. “Create a routine where you put your Fitbit tracker down in the same place—kind of almost make a ritual of it—and think about what you’re doing so that you can remember it each time,” suggests Small.

“I take off my Fitbit Charge 2 to charge it, clean it, or for showering,” says Chris Jones, a principal program manager working on firmware at Fitbit. “To charge it, I put my keys near it—I can’t leave without it or my keys,” she says. “To clean it or for showering, I leave it on my bathroom counter next to my electric toothbrush and wedding ring. After I brush my teeth, I pick up my ring, Charge 2, bracelet, and hair tie.”

Look, Snap, Connect
“The biggest reason we don’t remember things is we’re simply distracted,” says Small. “Look is a reminder to focus your attention. Snap is a reminder to create a mental snapshot of what you want to recall later. Our brains are actually hardwired to remember visually, and this leverages that. And connect is a way of linking up those mental snapshots so they have meaning. If something becomes meaningful, it will be memorable.”

How do you put Look, Snap, Connect into practice? Let’s say you take your Fitbit tracker off to charge it while you make dinner and you want to remember to put it back on after you eat. When you pull out a pan, you might visualize a big battery or even your tracker hanging over the cupboard door. When you see your cabinet again, the same imagine will pop into your head, reminding you to retrieve your device.

Set a Reminder
Take advantage of the devices that you usually do remember. For instance, says Small, “if a person remembers his cellphone but has a habit of forgetting his Fitbit tracker, he might set an alarm on his cellphone as a reminder that he left the device in the charger.”

Get Regular Exercise
“A study of healthy older adults found that mental tasks involving executive control improved in a group that was prescribed a cardiovascular conditioning program but not in a control group that was prescribed only stretching and toning,” writes Small. And you don’t have to be a hardcore athlete—or even an athlete at all—to see results. “Studies show that just 20 minutes of daily brisk walking can lower a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease,” says Small. Check out The Best Walking Workout for Non-Exercisers to start easing into a new routine.

Reduce Your Stress
If you wear a Charge 2, Fitbit Blaze, or Fitbit Ionic, take advantage of Relax, Fitbit’s guided breathing experience. “If you inject a human subject or volunteer with a stress hormone, it causes temporary memory impairment,” says Small. “But meditation, tai chi, and breathing exercises can counteract these kinds of stress effects on brain health.”

Eat a Balanced Diet
Diets high in omega-3 fats fatty acids and antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables are linked to less age-related cognitive decline—likely because they protect the brain from harmful inflammation and oxidative stress, says Small. “Try to limit refined sugars and processed foods, which are also not good for brain health,” says Small. Here are 5 healthy recipes your brain with love.

Get Strong, Fast with This Two-Dumbbell Workout

Get Strong, Fast with This Two-Dumbbell Workout

woman doing a dumbbell rowThere’s an old, meathead stereotype that makes many strength-training newbies cringe: They pick stuff up and put it down. But what if you picked up a set of reasonably heavy dumbbells and never let them go? With this don’t drop the weight, two-dumbbell sequence, you’ll perfect your form while getting firm as you seamlessly transition from one movement to the other. Get ready to train your entire body and condition in minimal time! Repeat 3 to 5 times, depending on your experience level, resting for 1 to 2 minutes between rounds.

Dumbbell Triceps Kickback

woman doing a triceps kickback

Targets: Triceps

Hold two dumbbells by your sides with your palms facing inward. With your torso hinged forward and your knees slightly bent, kick your arms back. Your upper arms should be close to your torso and remain stationary throughout the movement—only your forearm should move. At the top of the movement, your arm should be fully extended. Pause at the top of the contraction, then slowly lower the dumbbell back to your starting position. Do 5-8 reps, don’t drop the weight, and continue into the next move.

Dumbbell Lunge and Curl

woman doing a dumbbell lunge and curl

Targets: Biceps and quadriceps

With palms facing forward and a dumbbell in each hang, step one foot forward and lunge. Bringing your back leg down, try to make your leading leg almost parallel with the floor. Be sure not to let your knee surpass your toes. As you lower into a lunge, curl both dumbbells up to your shoulders (making sure to keep your arms close to your side). Lower the dumbbells as you stand. Switch legs; do TK reps on each side. Then, don’t drop the weight, and continue into the next move.

Dumbbell Row

woman doing a dumbbell row

Targets: Middle back (latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, lower traps, and erector spinae)

Get into a plank position—hands under your shoulders, toes pressed into the floor, hips square, and neck and spine neutral. With a dumbbell in each hand, pull (or row) one arm back at a time. Concentrate on squeezing your back muscles rather than simply pulling with your arms. Switch arms, and repeat once on each side. Do 5-8  reps on each side, don’t drop the weight, and continue into the next move.

Looking for an added challenge? Break up your rows by doing a push-up in between. Just be sure to maintain proper form (and don’t let your hips creep up!).

Dumbbell Floor Presswoman doing a dumbbell press

Target: chest, shoulders

Lay on your back holding a dumbbell in each hand. With your grip slightly wider than shoulder width apart, angle the dumbbells about 45-degrees away from your torso and keep your elbows tucked in. Lower the dumbbells until your elbows touch the ground. Then, press back up. Do 5-8 reps, don’t drop the weight, and continue into the next move.

Standing Curtsey Lunge With Dumbbells

woman doing a curtsey lunge

Target: Glutes, abductors, adductors

Holding a dumbbell in each hand, step one leg behind the other at an angle. For example, if lunging your left leg back, angle it to the right so that your thighs cross. Bend both knees and lower (as if you were curtseying). Make sure your front knee doesn’t surpass your front ankle. Do 5-8 reps.

Rest for 1 to 2 minutes. Pick up the weights, and repeat the sequence, starting again with Dumbbell Triceps Kickback.

Rowing with Alexandra: Transplant Patient Achieves Amazing Physical Feat

Over the last few months, we’ve followed a woman and her incredible project: to row from Tahiti to Moorea with just two oars, the support of a few sponsors, and crowdfunding from some generous supporters.

Alexandra Caldas, 21, who hails from just north of Paris, was born with cystic fibrosis, and underwent a double lung transplant just four years ago. She decided to pursue her dream to go to Tahiti, and to then row the 10.5 miles from there to Moorea—all while balancing college classes with training in Paris. Today, celebrated for her accomplishment and overflowing with energy, she recounts her journey, the end of a chapter that signals, without a doubt, new adventures to come.

Rowing with Alexandra: Transplant Patient Achieves Amazing Physical Feat

Can you tell us how the crossing from Tahiti to Moorea began?

There was so much anticipation of this day—8 months of preparation led up to this date: August 5, 2017. I did not expect to be surrounded by so many people.

About a hundred rowers were there, all in pink lycra inscribed with the words: “Rowing with Alexandra” as well as several accompanying boats. I had not realized what would happen in the hours to come when I arrived at the rowing club in the morning to get the boat and join the procession.

How did you manage the physical effort? Did you have any moments of doubt?

During the difficult parts of the journey, I looked at all the people besides me, including my parents, who were on one of the following boats. In fact, I had the isle of Moorea to my back, and the smiles of all these people in front of me. Imagine about 90 rowers in front of your boat. There were cries, chants…it was incredible. That helped me motivate myself to keep going until the end.

Besides that, the ocean did not give me an easy time. There were waves about six feet high.

I had one moment of doubt, that moment when I was seasick, but in my head I thought of all those people who help me every day of my life: my donor, my relatives, various transplant recipients, others who have cystic fibrosis, my medical teams… but above all, the rowers who all came for the same reason: to talk about organ donation.

Many people came to support you. Can you tell us more about the atmosphere that prevailed both on land and on water?

The atmosphere was like a party—everyone was happy to be there. Smiles, laughter, but above all, a lot of hope. This crossing was even more special because of a few people: Terry Haymes, a boy with cystic fibrosis in Polynesia, and a few rowers in a Va’a— a traditional canoe — who have undergone a kidney or liver transplant.

What did you think when you achieved your goal?

A few years ago, before my transplant, I was told that I would never go to Tahiti. Why? Because it is very far away, there are too many medical risks, but mainly because my breathing capacity was decreasing day by day, and it was more and more difficult for me to breathe. When I hit my goal, I proved that the impossible is possible. I came to Polynesia and what’s more, I rowed 10.5 miles across the sea with just oars!

Rowing with Alexandra: Transplant Patient Achieves Amazing Physical Feat

What is your best memory?

My best memory is when I arrived at the Moorea channel: I felt such strong emotions, for the rowers, for the people who accompanied us, but especially for Matthieu, my coach and crew member, and of course, for me. We had just arrived on the Moorea lagoon. All the rowers surrounded us, and I shouted with glee at the top of my (new) lungs. I did it! I don’t know how to properly describe this amazing moment.

Looking back, what message do you hope to have passed on?

I hope I have showed that transplants can work! I have proved that the impossible can be made possible, and I have given hope to young people with cystic fibrosis as well as those awaiting a transplant. I realized this from the many messages I received: from patients, parents, and many more.

Have you already thought about other projects?

I have other projects…if you want to know more, follow me on my Facebook page, Rame avec Alexandra—because this was only the beginning!

Since this interview, Alexandra has participated in the Virades de l’Espoir, demonstrations to give hope to patients and support medical research in cystic fibrosis. And as if it were necessary to prove that one crossing calls for another, she rowed from Paris to the Hauts-de-Seine, again just with an oar. Hats off to you, Alexandra!

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

Last year with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, we introduced the Desktop Bridge to provide desktop applications a path to modernize with the Universal Windows Platform, and to distribute via the Windows Store and the Microsoft Store for Business to all Windows 10 PCs, including devices that are running the Windows 10 S configuration.

The primary developer tool at the time was the Desktop App Converter, a tool that converts your current app installer into a Windows app package (.appx file), which can be submitted to the Windows Store or deployed via your distribution mechanism of choice. With Update 4 for Visual Studio 2017 we now have great support directly in Visual Studio for your Windows desktop application projects (WPF, Winforms, Win32, etc.). With the new tools you can now as you develop them in VS by simply hitting F5!

Let me walk you through an example, step-by-step. I am starting out with this Winforms app that showcases various chart controls. It’s been created several years ago in an older version of VS against .NET 4. Now my goal is to release it in the Windows Store and incrementally modernize it. Here is how easy it is now with Update 4 for Visual Studio 2017.

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

Step 1 – Add Windows App Packaging project to the solution

Before we start we need to make sure our desktop application project is loaded in Visual Studio 2017 and builds without error. Then in the next step we want to package our application as a Windows App Package (.appx file) so our Winforms app can take advantage of all the same Windows 10 app deployment features that are available to UWP apps: clean install & uninstall, seamless updates, Store distribution and many more. To do this, we will take advantage of the new tooling features introduced in Update 4 for Visual Studio 2017. We are adding a new project of type “Windows Application Packaging Project” to our solution:

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

Now we need to specify our min/target versions…

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

…and let the packaging  project know which project output to include in the package. To do so we right-click on the “Applications” node and set a reference to our Winforms project – done!

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

Important! Select the “DistributionPackage” project as your startup project. Now hit F5 and watch how your app gets packaged, deployed and launched as a Desktop Bridge app. You can start testing and debugging in this new execution context. If you set the Winforms project as startup project and hit F5, you can still test and debug the unpackaged version of your application

Step 2 – Configure app for Windows Store release

Our app is already running as a Desktop Bridge app now and we have successfully tested and debugged it in this configuration. Next we just need to put some finishing touches on the package so it integrates nicely with the Windows 10 Shell (tiles, badges, etc.) and to make sure it conforms to the Store submission requirements. First thing, we need to replace the default visual assets that come with the project template with our real, application-specific assets. This is very easy now in Visual Studio 2017 with the Visual Assets Manager in the package manifest editor:

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

To prepare for our Store submission we need to create the application in the Windows Dev Center and reserve our application name, provide screenshots for the store front, set the price, age ratings, etc. If you are not planning to distribute via the Windows Store, you can skip this step.

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

Last thing we need to do before we can release our app to the public is create a package bundle that is ready to deploy and Store-compliant. This bundle can contain binaries for different architectures, resources for different locales as well as the symbols for our binaries so we can later make sense of any crash reports in the Dev Center or Mobile Center. This can be done for Desktop Bridge apps directly from Visual Studio now, just like you would do for any UWP app:

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

As part of creating the packages we also run the certification tests and then submit the package to the Dev Center for certification and publishing. You can try the result of my submission out now and install the sample app on your machine from the Store by clicking on the badge below – source code for the app is available for your reference here.

Visual Studio 2017 Update 4 makes it easy to modernize your desktop application and make it store ready

What else does this enable for developers?

Aside from distributing and monetizing via Windows Store, your app now enjoys the modern deployment capabilities built into Windows 10. You don’t need to build an installer anymore, updates are automatic and differential. Uninstalls are guaranteed to be clean. Moreover, since your app is now in the Windows 10 App Model, you have access to UWP APIs and features, such as live tiles, Cortana integration, background tasks etc. Another important benefit specifically for Windows Forms apps is the new high DPI support in .NET 4.7, which is included in the Windows Creators Update (1703). Our sample app here is taking advantage of this new support, by following the steps outlined in this article.

And there is more

Talking about installers, did you know that your app package is also your installer on Windows 10? Users can just click to install it, as long as it’s signed with a certificate that is trusted on the target device. This enables you to distribute your modernized desktop application in the way that’s right for your scenario, without having to go through the Store – e.g. for LOB applications in an enterprise. Learn more about it here.

Conclusion

Getting your desktop application development project ready for Windows Store submission is easy now with Visual Studio 2017 Update 4. Once converted to a Windows App Package your app can take advantage of all the Windows 10 platform capabilities and start using new APIs and features on Windows 10. Adobe XD CC: A New High-Performance UWP App for UI/UX Design

Adobe XD CC: A New High-Performance UWP App for UI/UX Design

It’s a big day today – after a year of public preview, Adobe released Adobe XD 1.0 on Windows 10 and Mac: a new tool for user experience creators to design, prototype and share interactive designs for apps and websites.

Adobe XD CC: A New High-Performance UWP App for UI/UX Design

When it comes to designing anything, it’s important to have design tools that support a fast and fluid process – one where you can iterate rapidly through a design, test, and build process: designing at the speed of thought. For interaction design, creative professionals have often used tools that excel at creating images of screens, but these tools that created static images have always missed something: transitions and interactions that demonstrate the experience. Putting an interactive prototype in front of stakeholders that they can try out is now a crucial part of the process, and being able to iterate on design rapidly based on the feedback from the prototype is essential. Being able to create a prototype without any coding is mandatory for this process. Almost a year ago, I wrote about a new app that fits these requirements, when Adobe released a public preview of Adobe Experience Design CC (XD) on Windows and Mac. Since then, Adobe was able to iterate quickly, releasing monthly updates of Adobe XD, responding to early customer feedback and an ambitious list of features that interaction designers wanted. We’re excited to share that today, Adobe XD as part of the Creative Cloud, is available today on Windows and Mac. Here are a few other reasons that that this is such an important release.

XD is a Universal Windows Platform App

Available through Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription, XD takes advantage of the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) to deliver a modern, high performance, professional design tool. Whether you’re working with one artboard or a hundred, XD gives you the same fast performance. The rendering surface is accelerated by DirectX and the UI is implemented in XAML, C++ and JavaScript.  Using this architecture, Adobe was able to have maximum code reuse between their Mac and Windows versions yet take advantage of the most advanced, platform specific UI layout technology. During XD’s preview period, Adobe was able to iterate quickly, leveraging a proprietary automated testing framework for much of their code built on the Windows Application Driver. The end result is a high-performance, stable, professional tool.

Design, Prototype and Share in One Tool

In creating Adobe XD, the team thought of the whole Design/Test/Build workflow that interactive designers go through, and made an easy-to-use tool for designing experiences, creating rapid prototypes and sharing them with others to get their feedback. With Adobe XD, you can rapidly create screens with standard tools as well as utilizing tools that have been specially designed for UX designers. Repeat Grid, for instance, allows users to quickly create content grids based on a single element – helping designers to simulate the type of content they often have to create. The Assets Panel helps users reuse important design elements such as colors, character styles and symbols – so that making changes across an entire document is fast and easy. At 1.0 XD is also connected to Creative Cloud Libraries, allowing users to leverage content across documents and teams. You can also add artboards for common screen sizes ranging from Android Wear to Surface Pro.

Switching from design to prototype mode is a single click, and you can quickly connect artboards to communicate the flow and paths of multiscreen apps.

Adobe XD CC: A New High-Performance UWP App for UI/UX Design

Once your prototype is ready for feedback, you can generate shareable web link of the prototype or embed it onto webpage or supported application. Since my team uses Microsoft Teams to collaborate, I can create a tab page in Teams using that link to share the design with my colleagues – they can interact with the prototype in Teams and we can chat about it there.

Designer and Developer Resources

In addition to the tools available, Adobe XD has a number of UI resources available for designers to use while creating, including Apple iOS, Google Material Design, Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft Office UI Fabric. Our Office and Windows teams worked closely with the Adobe XD team to deliver a great set of UI components that designers and developers can use to craft their user experiences. We will continue to work closely in the future as we help developers and designers take advantage of the Fluent Design System.

Adobe XD CC: A New High-Performance UWP App for UI/UX Design

This Is Just the Beginning

Having worked closely with the Adobe XD team for the past two years, this is a very exciting day. The designers, engineers, testers and product managers that I have met on the Adobe XD team are passionate about their product and are eager to hear your feedback as you try it out, use it and craft the next generation of user experiences. While today marks the 1.0 release of Adobe XD, the team has big plans ahead, including improvements for the way designers and developers work together. Read more about where they’re headed here.

You can download XD as a free trial or as part of Creative Cloud today. Adobe will also be hosting a live stream on UX design from Oct. 24-26. Watch and interact with Daniel Alegria, a Microsoft UX designer in action using XD on Windows. See the schedule and more content here.

Adobe has delivered a new, high-performance, UWP app that is useful to designers, and you should try it out today.
