Sweden may have taken home the iconic crystal microphone trophy following Loreen’s success at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, but when it came to data roaming, Scandinavian neighbour Norway was top of the charts.
With Eurovision hosted in the UK for the first time in 25 years, tens of thousands of music-lovers from around the world gathered for the spectacular annual showcase, with millions more watching on from home. EE analysed the amount of traffic running across its core mobile network at Eurovision sites across Liverpool during the week leading up to the glitter-fuelled grand finale.
Data behind the disco ball
And now the scores are in, with roamers from Norway using 740GB of mobile data – pipping Ireland into second place with 398GB, followed closely by France with 371GB in third. Rounding out the top ten were Switzerland (164GB), Germany (136GB), Spain (125GB), Denmark (125GB), Sweden (120GB), USA (118GB) and the Netherlands (103GB).
In total, EE customers and international visitors downloaded more than 20TB of data on the EE network in the run up to the final, while exploring locations like the M&S Bank Arena and Eurovision fan village at nearby Pier Head. More than 55,000 international roamers used more than 3TB of data, which is the equivalent of more than 750,000 hours of music streaming or 600,000 Eurovision social media posts.
As fans from around the world used the EE network to capture and share Eurovision memories online, Instagram was the most popular app, accounting for more than 22 percent of data downloads, followed by TikTok (14 percent), YouTube (10 percent) and Facebook (8 percent).
With fans clamouring to support their favourite acts during the most watched final in Eurovision history, televoting on the EE network peaked at just under 400,000 on Saturday night as Finland’s Käärijä pushed Loreen all the way.
