Wednesday 14th August 2024 – New research commissioned by EE has found that by the 16th August, almost half of parents (45%) will have run out of things to do with their children over the summer holidays. Furthermore, three fifths (63%) admit to hiding from their children just to get a few moments of peace and quiet, with 1 in 10 (10%) even feigning illness so a family member can look after their children for a day or two.

School is out for summer and with that, chaos can descend on the family home. Increased sibling arguments (32%), endless snack re-stocking (46%) and bedtime routines going out of the window (44%) can mean maintaining a schedule to please everyone becomes a challenge for many parents.

Whilst nearly two thirds (63%) of parents appreciate the opportunity the summer gives them to create happy memories with their children, it can feel overwhelming for many, with 45% stating that juggling work with childcare is tough to manage. As a result of the chaos, a quarter of parents have resorted to de-weeding the garden (26%) and visiting the car wash (26%), with one in ten (10%) even taking trips to the dump to keep them amused.

To support parents this summer, EE has launched EE Home Presents: The Circus, a spectacular live action, immersive theatre performance that brings to life the chaos of the summer holidays and shows how an EE connected home can bring calm to households this summer.

Featuring artists from Revel Puck Circus, the limited-time event takes place at HERE at Outernet on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August. The performances have been curated with young people aged 5-15 plus their guardians in mind, and places can be secured in advance via a *charitable donation of £5.

The research also gave an insight into the use of technology over the summer holidays; 45% of parents say technology helps their kids learn new things and prepare as a family for the new school year ahead (27%), whilst 43% believe gaming develops their children’s creativity. And of those who use technology with their children over the summer, over two fifths (45%) agree that it is important their kids are safe.

With this in mind, EE Home has everything you need, all in one place, to transform chaos into calm this summer with its portfolio of products and services, including:

  • EE TV: EE TV includes flexible content packages and a choice of hardware with the EE TV App on Apple TV 4K, alongside EE’s own set-top box range and a multi-room option, sure to keep the whole family happy.
  • WiFi controls: Smart hubs that allow you to take full control of your home’s connectivity whilst enjoying fast, reliable speeds.
  • Broadband: EE Full Fibre offers blistering speeds up to 1.6Gbps plus the ability to activate Work Mode and Game Mode to turbocharge the at-home experience. So, whether you’re a busy parent working from home or a gamer after a connection without interruptions, EE home broadband has you covered.

To further support families this summer and beyond, EE also offers PhoneSmart, the first phone licence offering a free online programme that provides advice for young people and parents on how to navigate the digital world and stay safe online.

Comedian and father of three children, George Lewis, is as an ambassador for the EE Home Presents: The Circus campaign to help highlight the impact of the summer holiday period on parents.

Comedian and parenting influencer, George Lewis said: “I am already starting to feel overwhelmed when it comes to keeping my three kids entertained this summer, all whilst juggling work, bedtime routines, snack requests and more, and so I definitely agree that it can be a matter of survival at times! It’s brilliant to see how EE is supporting families via their EE Home offering to help ease some of the pressure. I know we’ll all be very excited to have a change of scenery and head to the circus.”

Pete Jeavons, Marketing Communications Director at EE said: “The summer holidays are a notoriously frenzied period for parents, with our research showing just how tricky it can be to juggle everyday life whilst keeping children entertained – and what better way to show this than through the creation of EE Home Presents: The Circus. The fully immersive experience for families brings to life the chaos of the summer holidays in a fun and engaging performance, whilst also showcasing how an EE connected home can turn chaos into calm this summer”.

Tickets for a 2-hour slot can be purchased via Today Tix, with all funds raised from each £5 ticket going to Home-Start*, a UK charity focused on equipping families with the necessary skills, confidence, and strength to nurture their children.

For those unable to attend in person, the performance will be available to watch shortly after the event on EE’s YouTube channel and EE TV.
