Last month we brought you the exciting news that Android 9 Pie1 was rolling out sooner than expected across multiple Xperia devices.
Now the update has landed on all applicable Xperia devices, we wanted to tell you exactly what’s been added and how it’s going to make your experience that much more personal and enjoyable.
From battery hacks, to new shortcuts, read on to find out the top new Android 9 Pie updates for your Xperia device.
Getting personal
Android 9 Pie has been designed with you in mind.
Using machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, your device gets to know your preferences, meaning the more you use it, the smarter it gets. Android 9 Pie makes small changes, tailored to how you use your device, leaving you free to focus on the important things.
Batteries and brightness
Whether you are immersed in a film, listening to your favourite tracks or gaming, the last thing you want to do is worry about your battery life. Well fear not, as Android 9 Pie comes with these awesome battery hacks to help keep your device going for longer:
Battery Saver keeps your charge going longer than ever by turning off features like the Always-On display. Plus, you have more control over when Battery Saver comes on – so you can go further on one charge.
Adaptive Battery uses machine learning to predict which apps you’ll use in the next few hours and which you likely won’t, so your phone only spends battery power on the apps you care about.
Adaptive Brightness learns how you set your screen’s brightness in different lighting environments and automatically does it for you over time.
Background restrictions will show you recommendations in Settings to restrict certain apps that use too much power, so you can have more control over your battery.
Smarter shots
With an all new camera layout, your favourite features are even easier to find. Love Bokeh mode? Forever snapping selfies? The camera will now remember the feature you used most recently and display an icon on-screen to give you quicker access the next time you open it. Frequently used adjustments like brightness and other settings will now also be easier to access on-screen.
Selective silence
Sometimes, we all need a little peace and quiet. Android 9 Pie makes the Do not disturb feature even easier to access via a long press of the button in Quick Settings, allowing you to choose which notifications deserve your attention. Plus, it won’t just silence notification sounds, but also all the visual interruptions. Calls from starred contacts will still come through, so you don’t have to worry about missing something urgent.
If you keep swiping notifications away from the same app, the machine learning software will recognise this and suggest turning them off completely. You can also pick and choose which are important on the fly, long pressing any unnecessary notifications as they appear to turn them off completely.
The improvements don’t stop there either, messaging apps can now provide suggested ‘smart replies’ in the notification, so you can respond in a tap, plus you’ll be able to see images sent from your friends in the notification itself, without opening the message.
The fine details
There are some final under the hood tweaks we think you’ll love, making things that little bit smoother.
You can now take screenshots easily from the power menu and draw, annotate, or crop them quickly
Simpler, more accessible controls let you control media volume instantly, as well as quickly tweak call and notification volume settings.
You also now have more control over your phone’s display, with a simple button that confirms when you’d like to change the rotation on your device display – even when your orientation is locked
