With the reveals of the Xbox Game Showcase 2024, we sit down with the developers of some of your favorite franchises to deep dive into their upcoming games.
Associate Design Director Kevin Drew, of Treyarch, sits down with The Coalition’s Studio Creative Director, Matt Searcy and Studio Brand Director Nicole Fawcette to explore the DNA of the Gears of War and Call of Duty Franchises through the lens of Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. They discuss the impact of new tech like Unreal Engine 5 on their games, finally getting to make the COD Zombies game they’ve always wanted to make, and the franchise pillars that drive the development on their respective games.
Then, Game Director Carrie Patel, from Obsidian Entertainment, sits down with Senior Director of Production, Earnest Yuen, from World’s Edge to discuss building the engaging worlds of Avowed and Age of Mythology: Retold. They talk about reframing previously lived in worlds (Pillars of Eternity games and Age of Mythology (2002)) for modern audiences, how their own personal play styles affect how they develop games, and how each game’s power fantasy elements engage and connect players to their game worlds.
Finally, Creative Director Hugo Matin of id Software joins VP and Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté of Ubisoft to discuss technological and gameplay innovation for the Doom and Assassin’s Creed Franchises. They discuss the pillars of each franchise and how figuring out the time and place for a game impacts the story, gameplay and general design philosophies and how an increase in fidelity impacts mechanics and gameplay in the upcoming Assassins Creed Shadow’s and Doom: The Dark Ages games.
