WILL EU MARRY ME: Nearly 3 in 5 women would want to be proposed to outside the UK

  • According to research by Virgin Media O2, Paris is the most romantic European city to get engaged in.
  • As leap day approaches, so does the tradition attached to the date where women are encouraged to ‘break the norm’ and propose to their boyfriends.
  • Over a third of women (38%) would immediately spread the word of their engagement via videocall (67%) and phone call (52%).
  • O2 is the only major UK provider to offer its customers inclusive roaming in 49 European countries, up to 25GB, at no extra cost.

Research by Virgin Media O2 has found that nearly three in five (58%) women want to be proposed to while abroad, with Paris ‘The City of Love’ winning the hearts of the nation as Europe’s most romantic backdrop for a proposal followed by Rome, Santorini, London and Barcelona.

As leap day (29th February 2024) approaches, so does the tradition attached to the date where women are encouraged to ‘break the norm’ and take the plunge to propose to their boyfriends.

But research suggests women proposing shouldn’t be limited to a leap year, as nearly half (44%) of unmarried heterosexual women believe they would do a better job than their boyfriend at popping the question. It seems men might not care about sticking to ‘the norm’ either, as nearly three in four (73%) women believe their partners would be ok with them popping the question.

On what would make or break a proposal, the ring not fitting is an obvious mishap, while not feeling ‘photo ready’ or being able to speak to loved ones straight away were also deemed to be big no nos. Over a third of women (38%) would immediately spread the word of their engagement to family or friends via videocall (67%) or a phone call (52%). And making it social media ‘official’ also proves important for would-be fiancées as over two in five (41%) women would post the news on social media immediately (13%) or the next day (28%).

For men who do plan to propose the pressure is firmly on, as seven in ten (72%) women believe the way a partner proposes is important and over one in four (26%) women would reject their partner if their proposal didn’t meet expectations.

With so many women hopeful for a holiday proposal (58%) and being able to share the happy news straight away deemed essential for post-proposal plans (38%), Brits across the country could be in with luck this leap day as O2 is the only major UK provider to offer all customers inclusive EU roaming in 49 European countries (up to 25GB) as standard and at no extra cost. So, whether getting engaged this leap year in Rome, or popping the question in Portugal, O2 customers can celebrate with their loved one back home without having to worry about their phone bill.

To avoid the possibility of any future rejections, Virgin Media O2 has pulled together the top 10 worst proposal failings according to heterosexual women.

Ranking  Biggest proposal failings
1st  The proposal being in a busy, public place
2nd  Being serenaded
3rd  The ring not fitting
4th  Not being able to speak to loved ones straight after
5th  The weather being bad
6th  Having no plans afterwards
7th  Not having it filmed
8th  Not looking ‘photo ready’
9th  Disliking the ring
10th  Not being able to share the news via social media

A spokesperson at Virgin Media O2 said: “For those planning to pop the question while away in Europe, the cost of a trip abroad and an engagement ring on top can be a significant financial strain. As the only major UK provider to offer all customers inclusive roaming in 49 European countries (up to 25GB) at no extra cost, O2 customers have one less thing to worry about when their fiancée wants to flaunt their new ring on a videocall.”

While everyone gets to enjoy an additional day this year, Virgin Media O2 customers can also get a leap in their broadband speeds, mobile data and access to inclusive roaming in an additional 26 countries including the USA, Mexico and Australia when they connect their Virgin Media and O2 accounts together via Volt. Virgin Media gigabit broadband now available to 12,000 homes in Blyth for first time

  • Full-fibre broadband with top speeds of 2Gbps now available to more than 12,000 additional homes and businesses in Blyth
  • Blyth residents can now sign up to broadband up to 36 times faster* than the local average.
  • Services are now available in Blyth following investment by nexfibre, which is investing £4.5bn in the UK to build a new full-fibre wholesale network to 5 million homes by 2026

More than 12,000 homes and businesses in Blyth can now access Virgin Media’s gigabit broadband services for the first time.

Customers in Blyth can now sign-up to services including Gig2 broadband which offers top speeds of 2Gbps – 36 times faster* than local average. These hyperfast connections are perfect for busy households working remotely, streaming UHD TV shows and films, video calling friends and family and playing games online.

Virgin Media’s services are now available locally after work to bring full fibre connections to the area has been completed. The network has been built on behalf of nexfibre, which is investing £4.5bn to deliver high speed fibre to the home (FTTH) connections to 5 million homes across the UK by 2026. Virgin Media O2 is using this next-generation network to deliver its broadband and TV Stream services to homes and businesses in the area.

Julie Agnew, Managing Director of Fixed Network Expansion at Virgin Media O2 said: “12,000 more homes in Blyth can now feel the benefit of Virgin Media’s services – with packages that include everything from next generation multigigabit broadband to easy-to-use TV streaming and entertainment services.

“These ultrareliable full fibre to the home broadband connections come with speeds – up to 36 times faster than local average – providing total peace of mind that whatever you’re doing online, you’ll never be slowed down by your service.”

Rajiv Datta, CEO at nexfibre said: “We’re proud to be able to facilitate access to futureproof hyper-fast fibre to more than 12,000 premises in Blyth, thanks to our multi-million pound in investment. We continue on our mission to build and expand our network in suburban and semi-rural areas, and play our part in helping to close the digital divide and boost the UK economy.”

Virgin Media O2 is leading Britain’s gigabit charge with speeds of 1,000Mbps+ available across its entire network. The company invests around £2bn a year in its networks and services and is also in the process of upgrading its entire fixed network to full fibre to the home (FTTH) technology over the coming years.

In addition to its ultrafast broadband network, Virgin Media O2’s mobile network covers 99% of the nation’s population with 4G, with the business also rolling out 5G services to bring the latest mobile connectivity to more parts of the country. O2 is the only mobile network operator not to have reintroduced roaming fees in Europe and customers can save week-in week-out through Priority – its reward scheme which gives exclusive access to offers, prize draws, competitions, and presale tickets.

Customers of both Virgin Media and O2 can supercharge their services and reap extra rewards through Volt. Alongside double mobile data, roaming in 75 countries, new and existing customers who take a Virgin Media broadband service and an eligible O2 Pay Monthly plan will receive a broadband speed boost to the next tier available – meaning customers on a 500Mbps Virgin Media package could be boosted to Gig1 at no extra charge.

nexfibre is a joint venture between InfraVia Capital Partners, Liberty Global and Telefónica and is financed with £4.5 billion of equity and debt investment. It will initially roll out fibre to 5 million homes not currently served by Virgin Media O2’s network by 2026, with the opportunity to expand to an additional 2 million homes. Virgin Media O2 is the anchor tenant of this joint venture and provides build services to nexfibre. Taken together, nexfibre and Virgin Media O2 will cover up to 23 million premises or around 80% of the UK later this decade.

Virgin Media O2 Unveils the Next Phase of its Mobile Network Evolution, with 5G Standalone Switch On

  • Virgin Media O2 has today switched on its next-generation 5G Standalone network in 14 cities across the UK
  • Virgin Media O2’s brand new 5G Standalone network offers higher bandwidth and lower latency connections, meaning customers can experience wider 5G coverage and more reliable connectivity
  • The operator’s rollout continues at pace, in line with the UK Government’s Wireless Infrastructure Strategy ambition to have 5G Standalone coverage in all populated areas by 2030

Virgin Media O2 has today announced the switch on of its 5G Standalone network in 14 cities across the UK.

Customers in the 14 locations* will be the first to access this major upgrade which brings wider 5G coverage, higher bandwidth, and improved latency.

The new network will be available to consumers with 5G Standalone compatible SIMs and devices** at no extra cost and customers will seamlessly switch between 4G, 5G or 5G Standalone to ensure they experience the best connectivity wherever they are.

Unlike existing 5G services which have relied on parts of the 4G network to send and receive data, Virgin Media O2’s 5G Standalone network is a completely new network built using the newest future-proofed radio infrastructure and a totally cloud-based core. Thanks to this multi-million pound investment, customers will benefit from enhanced network reliability and a larger coverage footprint.

5G Standalone will increase network capacity, cut latency, and support a massive increase in the number of connected devices. This will unlock many of the innovative use cases associated with 5G, including autonomous transport solutions, remote healthcare and fully robotic factories. It will also enable network slicing and pave the way for Virgin Media O2 to offer dedicated services for things like augmented reality, gaming, advanced robotics and other business use cases.

The 5G Standalone network also uses more energy efficient technology, helping Virgin Media O2 to cut its energy use and emissions in line with its ambitious Better Connections Plan.

The switch on of 5G Standalone follows another year of mammoth investment in Virgin Media O2’s mobile network, with the operator now providing 5G coverage to more than 50% of the UK population.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “The launch of 5G Standalone is the culmination of a multi-year programme and is a real leap forward in the evolution of our mobile network. While it’s still early days, our customer-centric rollout will continue throughout 2024 with some consumer customers seeing the immediate benefits including increased reliability and coverage. This new technology will future proof our mobile network for years to come and paves the way for exciting customer led innovations in the future.”

Kester Mann, director of consumer and connectivity at CCS Insight, said: “The launch of 5G Standalone is an important milestone for Virgin Media O2 as it opens the door to it offering a host of new services. Many of these are associated with the long-term vision of 5G, such as network slicing and super low-latency applications. With availability in 14 cities across the UK, many customers will already be able to enjoy the benefits of faster speeds and enhanced network capacity.”

Virgin Media O2 will be continuing its rollout of 5G Standalone to more towns and cities throughout the UK in 2024, as it continues investing in its network to improve mobile connectivity for even more of its customers. Last year, the operator upgraded its 4G network in over 465,000 UK postcodes.

Virgin Media O2, Liberty Global and Telefónica kick off plans to create a national fixed NetCo in the UK

  • Creation of new fixed ‘NetCo’ that will underpin fibre strategy and complete Virgin Media O2’s upgrade of 16 million homes to full fibre
  • Creates a distinct, focused fixed wholesale challenger at scale offering clear choice to other ISPs
  • Provides financing optionality and a platform for potential altnet consolidation in future
  • Fully consolidated subsidiary of Virgin Media O2 will be leverage neutral with nexfibre JV remaining separate

16 February 2024: Virgin Media O2 together with its shareholders, Liberty Global and Telefónica, have initiated plans to create a distinct national fixed network company (NetCo) that will underpin full fibre take up and roll out; provide new financing optionality and a platform for potential altnet consolidation opportunities; and establish the biggest dedicated fixed network challenger in the country, offering clear wholesale choice at scale for other providers as a major alternative to BT’s Openreach.

The entity, which will be a fully consolidated subsidiary of Virgin Media O2 and have a neutral impact on the company’s leverage and credit structure, will comprise of the operator’s cable and fibre network assets covering 16.2 million premises across the UK today, with all upgraded to full fibre in the coming years.

Aligned with Virgin Media O2’s current network strategy, NetCo will focus on completing the company’s ongoing fibre upgrade programme which sees the existing cable network overlayed with full fibre. The structure also gives optionality and flexibility for future in terms of financing and playing a role in potential altnet consolidation alongside pursuing wholesale opportunities as a scaled network alternative.

Virgin Media O2’s consumer and B2B units, and its mobile network, which together make up one of UK’s largest communications providers, will continue to serve millions of customers with a range of connectivity services that will evolve over time.  Through a wholesale agreement, NetCo will connect Virgin Media O2’s entire fixed customer base, providing revenue and attractive cash flow from day one of operation.

Virgin Media O2’s mobile assets will not form part of the NetCo, and nexfibre, the independent fibre joint venture between Liberty Global, Telefónica and Infravia, will continue to operate separately focusing on fibre network expansion into greenfield areas.

Once all planned fibre build is completed, the separate NetCo and nexfibre networks will reach a combined total of up to 23 million homes, which will see clear fibre network competition at scale in the UK reaching around 75% of the country. Collectively, Virgin Media O2 and nexfibre have a full fibre footprint of more than 4 million premises today.

The development of this NetCo is underway between teams at Virgin Media O2 and its shareholders Telefónica and Liberty Global. Further details and operational timelines will be announced in due course and subject to any necessary regulatory approvals. In the meantime, fibre upgrade activity continues unchanged at Virgin Media O2.

Lutz Schüler, CEO of Virgin Media O2, said: “This is a logical evolution of our fibre strategy that creates a clear, focused and scaled network entity within the Virgin Media O2 family which underpins our shift to a fully fibre network and reinforces our position as the leading challenger to Openreach in the market. Working closely with our shareholders, this network business will provide a platform for potential altnet consolidation and wholesale opportunities in future, offering widescale network choice for other providers, as well as giving financing optionality. While nothing changes today work is well underway and you’ll hear more from us later in the year.”

Virgin Media O2’s Shared Rural Network rollout reaches new heights, as helicopters deliver its 100th site on the Isle of Skye

  • Virgin Media O2 has hit a major milestone after it rolled out reliable 4G coverage across 100 rural sites as part of its commitment to the £1bn Shared Rural Network programme
  • Isle of Skye became the 100th site to be delivered by Virgin Media O2, with helicopters delivering 4G masts to remote sites on Scotland’s second largest island
  • The operator’s SRN rollout continues at pace, with further rural communities set to benefit from reliable mobile coverage in the near future

13 February 2024: Virgin Media O2 has hit a major milestone in the Shared Rural Network programme after upgrading or building 100 company-managed sites, providing residents, businesses and visitors in rural communities with faster and more reliable mobile coverage than ever before.

The milestone means Virgin Media O2 has gone further than any other operator to date to deliver new infrastructure as part of the SRN programme. These 100 sites are controlled by Virgin Media O2, but customers of Three and Vodafone are also benefitting from the operator’s extensive rollout. Taking into account the progress of Three and Vodafone, Virgin Media O2’s customers can now benefit from reliable 4G services at 146 rural locations.

Isle of Skye, the second-largest island in Scotland, became the 100th site to benefit from improved mobile connectivity after Virgin Media O2 used helicopters to deliver and install new 4G masts to the island.

The SRN is a £1billion joint initiative between mobile network operators and the UK Government to extend 4G connectivity to 95% of the UK’s landmass by the end of 2025.

Of the 100 rural sites that have been built or upgraded by Virgin Media O2 so far, 78 are in some of the most remote parts of Scotland, including Shetland, Ardross, and Argyll & Bute, while 19 are in rural parts of England, including parts of Yorkshire, Suffolk and Kent, and three are in Northern Ireland.

The upgrades provide customers with faster and more reliable mobile data and higher quality voice calls, transforming coverage in areas with previously patchy or slow services.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “We’re going to extreme lengths connecting the most remote corners of the UK to deliver our share of the Shared Rural Network.

“This investment is vital to ensure we provide fast and reliable coverage to all areas of the UK. With so much of our modern life taking place online, rural communities deserve the same standard of mobile connectivity as those in urban areas, and we’re proud to be stepping up and playing our part.

“The 100 sites we have delivered will mean that more residents, businesses and visitors in rural areas can benefit from better mobile coverage, with more locations to follow in the coming months. This work is vital in tackling the urban-rural digital divide that exists in the UK.”

ENDS

Notes to editors

  • The Shared Rural Network was developed by the UK’s four mobile network operators (Virgin Media O2, EE, Three and Vodafone) and Government, with the aim of improving rural connectivity.
  • By upgrading existing networks and working together on shared infrastructure and new sites, the MNOs and Government will transform mobile coverage in rural areas.
  • To deliver the programme, MNOs will invest a total of £532m to eliminate the majority of ‘partial not-spots’ – areas which receive coverage from at least one, but not all, operators. The UK Government will provide a further £500m to build new masts to eliminate ‘total not-spots’ – hard to reach areas where there is currently no coverage at all.
  • SRN is a sustainable approach to the challenge of delivering rural mobile coverage. The programme will transform 4G coverage without duplicating infrastructure, minimising the impact on our countryside.
