EE TV – THE NEXT STEP FORWARD FOR NEW EE

By Marc Allera, CEO, EE.

The launch of EE TV is one of the first significant strides we’re taking since we launched New EE in October, when we moved the best of everything we offer – mobile, broadband, TV and other converged services – to our EE brand and EE platform.

Our EE TV service is a great example of how New EE does more for our customers. It’s built for busy households, and we believe it will elevate the TV experience for consumers across the UK. Our new range of powerful set-top boxes will give customers a slick and premium experience for watching the best entertainment, sport and movies via our flexible content packages.

And, in an exciting UK-first, we’re launching EE TV on Apple TV 4K via the new EE TV app, with a bespoke TV guide that gives you a live TV experience featuring more than 70 Freeview channels including BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, plus a new EE-branded remote. You can read more about what more new EE TV can do, our new hardware and how can also take out a multi-room option at no extra charge, here: https://newsroom.ee.co.uk/ee-launches-ee-tv–a-comprehensive-new-service-offering-flexible-access-to-premium-content-a-uk-first-with-apple-tv-4k-and-free-multi-room/.

We are proud to work with amazing companies at the heart of technology innovation every day. And our EE TV launch is just one part of New EE’s plans to evolve what we offer, with compelling experiences for consumers across the UK. The changes we are making and these announcements are about us adapting to meet our customers’ needs for now, and for the next decade.

The second part of what we’re changing is that New EE is built on a new technology platform. We have created a new way of joining our brand and our service. We’ve put an EE Identity – an account – at the heart of that, which means anyone can join us. You don’t need broadband or mobile connectivity with us to join New EE. And that means we can truly be open to anyone in the country who wants to create a relationship with us. You can set up your EE ID in less than a minute on our website, or by downloading our app. However, you do need EE broadband to get EE TV.

The third part of the story is the new verticals and other services that we’re providing, from gaming to security to insurance. We already have a huge amount of confidence that it will work because we’ve been testing and trialling over the past few months in a few verticals. One of which is gaming. We’re not in the business of making games. We’re not going out to rival Activision Blizzard in Call of Duty, for example. But what we can do is partner with some of these brands brilliantly. We partner with some of the best brands on the planet at what they do and we create brilliant services that are giving our customers more.

A TELCO FIT FOR THE FUTURE

The best of everything on New EE, our new platform and the EE ID, and the new verticals we now offer are the next step for us adapting to what the role of a telco is in the future. As the UK’s largest subscription business, we are evolving to play a much more important role in customers’ lives beyond the essential connectivity we are famous for.

And, as I said it’s open to anyone, you won’t need to have a mobile or broadband account with us. It means you could be on any network yet still be able to buy a smartphone or games console from us, or put all your digital subscriptions in one place to make life a little easier to manage.

This is just the start. Upcoming releases will see us add more partners, subscriptions, services and capability, like the ability to log into other sites and services so that you don’t have to worry about remembering all your passwords.

Today, we’re really excited to have launched a truly flexible TV experience for the busiest homes. We believe EE TV is set to give consumers more choice, and more flexibility.

New EE is here. New EE will do more than we’ve ever done for our customers. And we can’t wait to bring you with us on the next step of our journey.

GRANDMOTHER ON ONE OF THE UK’S MOST REMOTE INHABITED ISLANDS SHOPS ONLINE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER THIS CHRISTMAS

  • Alice Arthur is Christmas shopping online for her seven grandchildren for the first time thanks to a newly installed EE 4G mast, as part of the Scottish Government’s 4G Infill programme
  • The grandmother from Out Skerries, an island of just 70, would previously have to make a six hour round trip by boat, bus and foot to do her Christmas shopping

A grandmother on Out Skerries, one of the UK’s most remote inhabited islands, is doing her Christmas shopping online for the first time ever thanks to a new EE mast introducing 4G mobile coverage to the isolated area.

The island of roughly 70 inhabitants includes Alice Arthur, age 63, who said that the new mobile internet access has “opened up a whole new world” as she shops for her seven grandchildren this festive season.

Alice, who has grandchildren ranging from 5 to 24 years old, would previously have to make a six hour round trip to reach Lerwick on mainland Shetland to do her Christmas shopping.

The new high-speed 4G connectivity is available from a new mobile mast that has been activated for 4G by EE to connect the island community as part of the Scottish Government’s £28.75 million Scottish 4G Infill programme (S4GI). The programme is delivering 4G infrastructure and connectivity to rural and island communities across Scotland, which previously had no or extremely limited mobile coverage, while respecting the rural landscape.

In addition to Out Skerries, EE has recently activated another 4G mast as part of the S4GI programme on the also hard-to-reach island of Foula, Shetland.

Alice said: “Gift buying for my grandkids was never easy as I was only able to choose from what was available on the Shetland mainland – and without many options to choose from, I was always worried that some of what I found wouldn’t be very exciting to them. But now, with this new connectivity, there’s just so much choice. I can find such a wide range of toys and clothing, at good prices, and have them delivered right to my door. It’s made things so much easier.”

Alice is just one local resident on Out Skerries to benefit from the new 4G connectivity thanks to EE’s partnerships with the Scottish Government, WHP Telecoms, Cellnex UK and Scottish Futures Trust. EE 4G connectivity is now available on 51 of the new 55 S4GI mobile masts across Scotland, with these widespread sites providing vital connectivity to not only residents, but local businesses and Scottish emergency services.

Greg McCall, Chief Networks Officer at BT Group, said: “Alice’s story is a powerful reminder of how reliable 4G connectivity can transform the everyday lives of people in rural communities, especially those living in some of the UK’s most isolated areas. These new 4G sites provide residents with fast and reliable access to online services like banking, healthcare, and shopping, while empowering rural Scottish businesses to take mobile payments and offer new digital experiences. Together with the Scottish Government and our industry partners, we are helping close the UK’s digital divide and deliver the connectivity boost countryside communities can rely on.”

Scottish Government Innovation Minister, Richard Lochhead, said: “Thanks to our £28.75 million S4GI programme we’ve brought 4G to these Shetland islands, showing our commitment to providing future-proofed connectivity to rural and island communities.

“These phone masts mean residents, businesses and visitors in these communities can work, communicate and access services more efficiently. This is about creating opportunities for businesses, improving daily life and ensuring no one – even the hardest to reach – is left behind in the digital era.”

BROADBAND MADE FOR YOU: NEW BRAND CAMPAIGN SHOWCASES THE SPEED AND POWER OF EE HOME BROADBAND

  • EE launches new audience-led campaign, Broadband Made For You, highlighting the benefits of EE home broadband for three specific audiences: home workers, gamers and late night scrollers
  • Broadband Made For Working From Home will run across TV, broadcast video on demand (BVOD), online video (OLV), radio, social and out of home (OOH). View, share and embed the content HERE
  • Broadband Made For Gaming will sit across broadcast video on demand (BVOD), online video (OLV), social, radio and out of home (OOH). View, share and embed the content HERE
  • Broadband Made For You will feature on broadcast video on demand (BVOD), online video (OLV) and social. View, share and embed the content HERE

27th November 2023: EE today launches its new integrated brand campaign, Broadband Made For You, highlighting the speed and power of EE home broadband for three specific audiences: home workers, gamers and late night scrollers.

The audience-led campaign, created by Saatchi & Saatchi, brings to life the way home broadband from EE, the UK’s fastest major broadband provider, elevates the everyday moments in customers lives. Whether supporting home workers when all the family are home with EE Work Mode, ensuring lag-free gaming nights with EE Game Mode or putting doomscrolling to bed with EE Wi-Fi Controls, these campaigns illustrate how EE broadband is made for you.

The three narratives are:

1.      Broadband Made For Working From Home

The first film depicts a familiar scene for many busy households; a work video call taken from the kitchen table. Suddenly, the clock strikes 16:59 and the call is interrupted with shouts of ‘mum’ as the front door swings open and children run to greet their parents. The spot then highlights that the families are in The Invasion, with an array of scenes showing children arriving home from school and housemates loudly playing video games, while home workers attempt to finish off their day.

Demonstrating how EE customers can boost their broadband when working from home, the dad taps his phone to activate EE’s new Wi-Fi enhancer, Work Mode, boosting the connection to his work apps and giving them priority over the Wi-Fi. The advert ends with a woman working from home uninterrupted while her family freely move around her.

The integrated campaign showcases how EE’s home broadband with new Work Mode supports home workers, even when all the family are home. The campaign goes live with a nationwide TV campaign on Monday 27th November during Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, with other key broadcast slots including:

  • I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! (ITV) – Tuesday 28th November
  • The King’s Guard: Serving the Crown (Channel 5) – Thursday 30th November

It will also run across out of home (OOH), broadcast video on demand (BVOD), online video (OLV), radio and social.

2.      Broadband Made For Gaming

The second narrative is an extension of the previously launched EE Game Mode above the line (ATL) campaign, that uses real people, rather than actors, to show the UK how to level up their gaming with Game Mode on EE.

Set against iconic British soundtrack – It’s Not Over Yet by The Klaxons – the film opens on a dreary Sunday conveying a feeling of boredom as the many protagonists clock watch their way through the afternoon. There is a palpable change in tempo as the viewer sees ‘Game Mode’ activated, broadband bandwidth prioritised, and the day transformed into ‘Sunday Funday’ with each of the featured households engaged in an epic gaming session.

The updated advert ends with the familiar voice of Kevin Bacon reminding viewers to ‘turbo charge your gaming and reduce lag with EE Game Mode, with the UK’s fastest major broadband provider’.

Broadband Made For Gaming will run across broadcast video on demand (BVOD), online video (OLV), social, radio and out of home (OOH).

3.      Broadband Made For You

The final film opens on a woman at home scrolling on her device as time ticks by and the evening moves on around her. The advert then cuts to a myriad of faces as they each sit in their beds scrolling while Insomnia by Faithless plays in the background: ‘I can’t get no sleep’. Suddenly, Kevin Bacon announces ‘put doomscrolling to bed with EE Wi-Fi controls’ as the Wi-Fi pauses the woman’s device using a Wi-Fi sleep schedule. The woman then smiles, closes her device and turns her bedside lamp off to go to sleep.

The Broadband Made For You campaign will sit across broadcast video on demand (BVOD), online video (OLV), and social.

Pete Jeavons, Marketing Communications Director at EE, comments: “EE home broadband has been created with our customers in mind, able to cope with the online demands of a busy household. This campaign showcases how the power of EE home broadband allows customers to boost and control the connectivity in their homes, so they can get the most out of their Wi-Fi even at peak times, on the UK’s fastest major broadband provider”.

The campaign was created by Saatchi & Saatchi, with media planned and bought by EssenceMediacomX and OOH agency, Posterscope.

On a mission to be the UK’s most personal, customer focused brand, EE has rebuilt its business from inside out based on the current and future needs of its customers. Following extensive customer research, new EE will focus on four key areas; game, home, learn and work, along with a suite of exciting products and services open to all UK consumers.

EE CREATES SHOPPERS’ SANCTUARY FOR BLACK FRIDAY DEAL SEEKERS

  • To help Black Friday bargain hunters find their calm, EE is creating a seasonal sale sanctuary in its UK-first Digital Spa, in Westfield London, White City

  • This follows new research from EE that reveals two fifths (40%) of shoppers admit the in-store shopping experience can feel stressful during Black Friday, with missing a bargain almost as worrying as being late to a friend’s wedding (16%)

  • The Digital Spa experience, situated in EE’s Studio store, includes an immersive sensory room and guided meditations designed to promote digital wellbeing, and offer some respite from the annual retail bonanza

  • EE has also teamed up with shopping expert and consumer psychologist, Kate Nightingale, to offer tips on how to spot and avoid ‘Black Friday Burnout’

  • Book a free 30-minute session in the Digital Spa HERE.

21 November 2023, London: EE is taking the stress out of the seasonal sales this year, following new research* that found two fifths (40%) of Brits will experience ‘Black Friday Burnout’ – stress as a result of shopping the sales – over the coming week. The EE Studio in Westfield London, White City, will host a dedicated shoppers’ sanctuary giving shoppers in the capital a moment to relax and recharge in the UK’s first Digital Spa, while consumer psychologist and shopping expert, Kate Nightingale, helps bargain hunters across the country to find their calm on the biggest shopping day of the year.

It comes as new research by EE reveals that 28 million people (53%) plan to bag a bargain this Black Friday, with well over half of shoppers (57%) looking to spend up to 10 hours looking for deals this week. It’s the younger generation who are particularly deal savvy with four fifths (80%) of Brits aged 25-34 planning to get involved.

With almost a third (30%) of Brits having already prepared their shopping list a week before, it’s clear the Black Friday hype is real. Of the shoppers surveyed, one in five (21%) often stay up late or get up early to check for the best deals online, while a further fifth (17%) say they are tempted to take the day off work. This rises to four in ten (40%) and three in ten (32%) respectively for 25-34 year olds. One in six Brits (14%) even admitted they’d go as far as missing a friend’s birthday to browse the sales.

And it’s the thrill of a bargain that many are chasing with two in five (44%) getting a kick out of finding the best deals, and a fifth (21%) enjoying getting competitive with other shoppers for the best deals. Over a quarter (26%) plan to do most of their Christmas shopping during Black Friday, while a third (29%) even stock up on gifts for the year ahead.

However, as exciting and rewarding as the seasonal sales can be, two fifths (40%) of shoppers admit that the in-store Black Friday shopping experience can feel stressful at times, with missing a deal almost as worrying as being late to a friend’s wedding (16%) or being told off at a parents evening (15%).

When asked about the most taxing elements of seasonal sales, shoppers cited long queues (23%) and overcrowding in busy shops (22%) as some of those that most inhibit their Black Friday experience.

To help Brits get the most out of their shopping experience this Black Friday, EE is creating a shoppers’ sanctuary in its UK-first Digital Spa, giving deal seekers a moment to relax and re-charge in between the sales. Situated in the EE Studio store in Westfield London, White City, the Digital Spa features guided meditations and an immersive sensory room, giving shoppers in the capital a moment of serenity in amongst the Black Friday storm.

For those deal seekers outside of the capital, EE has teamed up with shopping expert and consumer psychologist, Kate Nightingale, to create a guide to avoiding ‘Black Friday Burnout’, so they too can snap up the best deals in a safe and stress-free way.

Kate Nightingale, Shopping Expert and Consumer Psychologist, says: “Catching that perfect Black Friday deal not only releases dopamine, the reward neurotransmitter responsible for that lovely sense of pleasure, but also increases the sense of control, which is crucial to wellbeing and a feeling of safety. The excitement of striking multiple bargains during Black Friday can actually cloud your judgement, and enhance product valuations, so it’s important to approach shopping mindfully. It’s wonderful to see EE inviting customers to slow down and find their inner voice, not just on Black Friday but throughout the year in its Digital Spa”.

Kate Nightingale’s Guide To Avoiding Black Friday Burnout

To stay calm and banish ‘Black Friday Burnout’, Kate Nightingale recommends:

  • Take a step back, literally: Before buying something, put physical distance between you and the product. This helps to create mental perspective, allowing you to judge the product more objectively, and reduce your emotional attachment to it.
  • Go to the beach, not literally: It might be winter, but your imagination is as powerful in affecting your brain as the real thing. When feeling stressed or anxious, visualise yourself on a warm beach with the sound of waves. Even better visit somewhere calming and immersive like EE’s Digital Spa and allow your brain to find its equilibrium.
  • Sweeten your day: Low blood sugar reduces self-control, which can lead to impulsive shopping and poor decision making, increasing the chance of buyer’s remorse. Having regular snacks will allow you to take charge of your emotions and make better shopping decisions. If it’s something soft, like a cupcake, it can increase interpersonal trust, so you can build better rapport with retail staff.
  • Breathe in: The scents of the festive season are warm and cosy, with research showing it can help to put yourself at ease. When stressed, seek out areas with nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger and embrace the calm.
  • Ask yourself three questions: Our brains make over 20,000 decisions a day – we’re wired to think quickly. Avoid impulse shopping or spending unnecessary money by asking yourself three questions about what you want to buy: is it on my list, is it something I can do without and do I honestly love it?

There are three easy ways to spot if you’re experiencing ‘Black Friday Burnout’. These are:

  1. It’s cute! Smile: If you see something cute but don’t smile, it is a sign that your serotonin, or happy neurotransmitter is low – a symptom of stress.
  2. Everything is annoying: Irritability is a stress of overwhelm – whether it’s people walking too slow or long queues. Getting more worked up than normal is a sign of ‘Black Friday Burnout’.
  3. Memory genius: Our memories are affected by stress or anxiety. Before you head out, memorise your shopping list, and every hour, check it. If some of the words are hard to remember, it’s time for a break.

Asif Aziz OBE, Retail Director at EE, says: “We know how important Black Friday is to our customers and so we want to help make this easier. •  Nominations for all categories at the EE BAFTA Film Awards will be announced on 18th January 2024, with the winners unveiled on Sunday 18th February 2024

Tuesday 14th November, London: Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People and Where The Crawdads Sing) joined Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (Gangs of London and His House) and Himesh Patel (Station Eleven and Yesterday) alongside a host of other industry experts, to select the EE Rising Star Award shortlist for the 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards.

Now in its nineteenth year, it stands as the only EE BAFTA Film Awards category to be voted for by the British public, reinforcing EE’s commitment to become the UK’s most personal, customer-focused brand by providing the nation with an opportunity to have their voice heard. Celebrating new and emerging talent within the film industry, former recipients of the EE Rising Star Award have subsequently reached remarkable heights in the world of cinema and have become huge household names. The prestigious list of previous winners includes James McAvoy, Eva Green, Juno Temple, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Jack O’Connell, Will Poulter, John Boyega, Tom Holland, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Micheal Ward, Bukky Bakray, Lashana Lynch and this year’s winner Emma Mackey.

Joining Daisy Edgar-Jones, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Himesh Patel on the jury panel were a distinguished line-up of industry experts, who gathered at The Savoy, official hotel partner for the EE BAFTA Film Awards, to discuss the merits of the emerging talent longlist. The winner will be revealed at a ceremony on Sunday 18th February 2024.

Chaired by Anna Higgs, BAFTA Film Committee Chair, the panel also included casting directors Lucy Bevan (Barbie and The Batman) and Nina Gold (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Game of Thrones), and film producer Adam Ackland (Mauritanian and The Courier). The jury was completed by prominent film, entertainment, and arts journalists.

Daisy Edgar-Jones said:“I am so excited to have been asked to be a jury member for this year’s EE’s Rising Star Award. Being given the chance to watch so many phenomenal performers shine is such a joy and the calibre of talent this year is incredible. I feel very lucky.”

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù said: “It was an honour to be nominated for the EE Rising Star Award back in 2021 and it’s a full circle moment to now be helping to choose this year’s nominees. It has been a delight to join the jury panel and watch the outstanding performances of each nominee over the past few weeks., I’m excited to follow the trajectory of each actor’s career!”

Himesh Patel said: “Being part of the EE Rising Star Award jury panel has been such a privilege, especially given my previous jury experience with the BAFTA Elevate scheme. I’m particularly passionate about supporting rising stars in the film industry, and this award does just that.”

EE Rising Star Award jury chair and BAFTA Chair of the Film Committee, Anna Higgs, said: “Celebrating and elevating the next generation of talent is central to BAFTA’s year-round work, and the EE Rising Star Award is the perfect platform to shine the spotlight on their brilliance, and give film fans across the UK the chance to decide 2024’s winner. We’re delighted to continue our longstanding partnership with EE and to support all our EE Rising Star Award nominees and winners who have been on remarkable journeys over the years. We have an extraordinary line up of EE Rising Star Award nominees for this year and are excited to unveil them in January.”

Pete Jeavons, Marketing Communications Director at EE said: “Marking its nineteenth year, the prestigious EE Rising Star Award remains the only category voted for by the British public. New EE is committed to becoming the UK’s most personal, customer-focused brand, so we are proud to continue working alongside BAFTA to nurture and celebrate emerging talent in this ever-evolving industry, and to offer a platform for devoted film fans to participate and have their say. We look forward to revealing the five nominees in January and seeing who this year’s EE Rising Star will be.”

The EE Rising Star Award was created in honour of the late Mary Selway. A highly respected and BAFTA award-winning casting director whose 36-year career saw her work on more than ninety films and work with leading directors such as Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood. Mary’s work contributed to the creation of some of the silver screen’s most memorable characters and in 2001 she received BAFTA’s Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award.

The EE Rising Star Award shortlist will be announced on 10th January 2024, at which point public voting will open and be available to all UK residents at ee.co.uk/BAFTA. The full nominations for the EE BAFTA Film Awards will then be announced on Thursday 18th January 2024.

The ceremony will be held on Sunday 18th February 2024, with further details, including the host for the 2024 Awards, to be announced by BAFTA at a future date.

EE has been a long-standing partner of the EE BAFTA Film Awards, working to bring film fans closer to the BAFTAs through the magic of technology and consumer participation. Since the partnership began, EE has not only worked with BAFTA to introduce the EE Rising Star Award, but also used its award-winning network to create new and exciting opportunities for film fans to be part of the action on the red carpet.
