With MWCA in San Francisco and Broadband World Forum 2017 recently past, what’s abundantly clear at these events is how everyone is embracing the IoT use case approach, demonstrating very tangible ways to bring it to life.

I want to share some of them here, particularly following the recent hurricanes hitting different parts of the world, as I was impressed with Nokia’s flood abatement demo, which showed how rain water management can be improved to save lives against flood.

Together with Tussock from New Zealand, Nokia showcased how to control water flow and reduce the chance of flooding in cities. This smart city use case can be deployed in all possible rain water catch basins and manholes, reporting on water levels during summer or rainy seasons.

The solution connected the water level sensor with Nokia’s IoT Platform (IMPACT) using the T-Mobile mobile network and dashboard hosted in Nokia cloud. With the excellent connectivity support provided between the sensor and Nokia’s IMPACT, visitors observed how the IoT sensor in the live demo monitored the water level change and immediately reported back to the cloud-hosted dashboard. Once deployed, this practical smart city solution can then identify clogged drains or pipes and initiate actions for better waste and rain water flow management. Moreover, we brainstormed with Kyle Bassett, Vice President of Cartasite about another interesting use case regarding how this can be extended to other industries such as oil and gas to improve efficiencies.

T-Mobile then took a very hands on approach to demonstrating how flood abatement works in the T-Mobile Narrowband IoT (NBIoT) launch event After being served refreshments by connected robots, they added a twist to the flood abatement demo by showing how any liquid levels could be measured and reported on the IMPACT dashboard – from breweries to oil refineries – illustrating new ways to monetize a business.

We also demonstrated a Smart Waste solution together, which included sensor based waste measurement and collection scheduling. Though we used tennis balls to demonstrate, the point was well served. IoT sensors make good business sense.

Overall, these demos were very well received by participants, and the audience engagement drives home how huge the potential is for this nascent technology – both for improving people’s lives and for commercial applications.
