Fitbit Data Can Help You Beat Afternoon Energy Crashes

How do you feel in the afternoon? Do you hit a point in the day when your eyelids get heavy and thoughts wander? When time seems to crawl and you barely move?

If you’re anything like the average Fitbit user, this afternoon slump hits between 2 and 3 p.m. And no, it’s not a coincidence that millions of people experience this lull.

“It’s not at all unexpected and is actually quite predictable,” says Michael Smolensky, Ph.D., co-founder and former director of the Memorial-Hermann Chronobiology Center and co-author of The Body Clock Guide to Better Health: How to Use your Body’s Natural Clock to Fight Illness and Achieve Maximum Health. There is a biological rhythm in the drive for sleep and there are certain times of the day where there’s greater propensity, given the opportunity, for sleep to occur. Afternoon is one of those. Researchers see a drop in attentiveness and a tendency to want to take a short power nap, if allowed, in the early afternoon.”

Why is hard to pin down, but Smolensky thinks it may ultimately come down to energy use and the body’s need for rest and repair beyond what it gets at night. “There may be a shorter time span during the afternoon required for overall biological efficiency,” says Smolensky.

The problem? Modern life doesn’t really accommodate that need, which is why it can feel like you have to fight to stay awake and alert in the afternoon. Exactly when and how the afternoon slump hits can vary by individual, but there are a few steps everyone can take to maximize energy and productivity.

If people are tracking their activity level, they can determine on an individual basis what works and doesn’t work for them,” says Smolensky. “And then they can use that information to understand what their needs are and how they can schedule their activities accordingly.”

How to Beat the Afternoon Slump

Step 1: Get a Full Night’s Sleep
The CDC recommends that adults get at least 7 hours of sleep each night, but the average Fitbit user usually falls short, according to recent Fitbit research. And while less sleep may be ok for some, it might be making your afternoon slump worse. “The more people tend to be sleep deprived and not get the sleep that they require, the greater their propensity to feel very tired after the lunch—even if they don’t eat lunch—and the greater the drive to want to take a nap or kind of just mellow out for a while,” says Smolensky.

Using your Fitbit app, start paying attention to your sleep duration and quality (if your tracker detects Sleep Stages) as well has how you feel each morning. Do you have more energy on the weekends when you allow yourself to sleep in? Then you may need to start going to bed earlier to get more sleep during the workweek. Use these Fitbit sleep tools to get on a healthier, more consistent sleep schedule.

Step 2: Look for Patterns
If you get your sleep on track and your energy still tanks mid-afternoon, try to pinpoint the time frame. When you feel low, jot down the time. Or, tap the Hour Activity tile in your Fitbit app. From here you can look into each individual day to see exactly when you’re stationary the longest.

Step 3: Take a Power Nap
Once you’ve identified the hours you tend to crash, you can put a plan in place. The best thing you can do, if you’re able, is find a cool, dark place to take a 20-minute power nap. “A brief nap in the early afternoon can reduce fatigue, improve brain function, and even improve physical performance,” says Michael Grandner, PhD, a Fitbit sleep advisor and director of the Sleep and Health Research Program in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson.

Wrist-based Fitbit devices will automatically detect and store naps at least an hour in length in your sleep history. Manually log shorter shorter snooze sessions. Sleeping on the job unrealistic? Move on to step four.

Step 4: Plan Your Day
Because circadian rhythm is such a strong driver of your activity level and alertness, Smolensky recommends taking that into consideration when structuring your day. Do your most important tasks in the morning and save busy, mindless work—or running errands—for when you start to drag. “It’s about using your Fitbit data and saying, ‘hey, this is me and I need to give myself some downtime,’” says Smolensky. “If I’m in business or I have meetings, can I reschedule them so that I don’t look like a damn fool in the afternoon?”

Step 5: Seek Sunlight
If there are meetings or other responsibilities you can’t shrug off during your afternoon slump, then go towards the light before the fatigue sets in. “If you go out for lunch, one thing you can try is to go for a stroll and get natural sunlight,” says Smolensky. “Bright light is stimulating, but I don’t know for sure that the boost will carry over long enough; it depends on the individual.” Set a silent alarm on your Fitbit tracker to remind yourself to get outside before your energy sags.

Step 6: Have a Cup of Coffee
Another potential option? Caffeine. “Some individuals will have another round of coffee in the early afternoon,” says Smolensky. “Coffee is a light stimulant and can help right away, but sometimes there’s a rebound afterwards that can leave you feeling even more sluggish later.” If an afternoon cup of joe leaves you too wired to get to sleep later, tea may be a better option.

Step 7: Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself
“Recognize that this is normal,” says Smolensky. “Say, ‘OK, I don’t have to force myself to be something I’m not. My biology is telling me I need this rest either because I’m not getting enough sleep at night or I have greater sleep needs or maybe I have a health problem.” Whatever it is, “Don’t expect too much,” says Smolensky. “Have reasonable expectations depending on what your biological needs are.”

Gears of War 4 October Update Features New Maps and Halloween Event

Gears of War 4 October Update Features New Maps and Halloween Event

It’s been a year since Gears of War 4 landed on store (and digital) shelves and the birthday celebrations are winding down. Like a double-punch of awesome, our birthday is followed by the October Update arriving this Monday, October 23rd!

This Update is a milestone for us for many reasons. Not only does it deliver the last two maps for Gears of War 4, but it also includes support for our incoming Xbox One X Enhancements. We’ll be talking more about the specifics of our Xbox One X Enhancements VERY soon. Stay tuned.

Check out the video above for your first look at this month’s map drop – Fuel Depot and Lift Apex!

Map Drop

Fuel Depot Screenshot

Fuel Depot

That rush for Longshot in the trucks and that first dual sniper showdown is still as nailbiting as it was over 10 years ago – prepare to experience it all in a fresh light with the return of Fuel Depot to Gears 4!

Fuel Depot’s larger size provides ample opportunities to flank and catch opponents out in the open, while the warehouse gives Gnasher players a chance to shine with plenty of cover. The small windows of visibility offered by the warehouse shutters are still great for harassing your opponents with a Lancer – provided the enemy Sniper doesn’t take your head off first!

Lift Apex Screenshot

Lift Apex

Lift Apex builds upon the spirit of the original by re-imagining the design of the map without the mechanics of a moving lift and expanding territory. Set in an Imulsion Extraction Facility right in the middle of the Serano ocean, this ocean-bound elevator introduces a faster and more tactical experience than its original inspiration.

The battlefield has been redefined in small and large ways that will change the fights you think you know – from the faster flow from spawn to the numerous cover changes that offer different solutions to tackle each part of the map.

Without the movement of the lift in play, the action is fierce from the second you leave spawn thanks to two immediately available Power Weapons and Frags to fight over. The submarine bay offers a new enclosed defensible position (which is also great for Horde!) with a nearby EMBAR or Longshot that – if you’re brave enough to secure it – is the perfect tool to punish opponents from this elevated position.

New strategies will emerge thanks to timed shutters that can be closed by players in the Control Room, offering a window of protection for a limited amount of time. Use it to cover your back while crossing from mid, to force opponents into fighting up close and personal for a ring or simply to deny sightlines.

Season Pass holders can play both of these maps first with Double XP and 20% Bonus Credits from Monday 23rd October. These maps will be available for all to play for free in Public Matchmaking on October 30th.

Season Pass

The last Map Drop for Gears of War 4 also marks the end of our Developer Playlists with Double XP and 20% Bonus Credits. We’ve had a ton of fun playing with our Season Pass holders on the newly released maps the second they become available, and we hope you have too.

Since there will be no more Double XP and 20% Credit Bonus, we’re excited to introduce a new bonus in the coming months called the ‘Map Owned’ bonus. This bonus will offer a permanent percentage increase in XP and Credit gain for any maps you own whenever you play on them in Public Versus or Horde.

This means every player who owns Gears of War 4 will get this bonus across the 10 original maps – but only Season Pass holders will get this bonus across ALL 34 maps in the game whenever they play! Any individual purchases of Maps made separately also come with this bonus when played in Public Matchmaking.

The Road Ahead

Gears 4 Halloween Graphic

There’s plenty more to come from Gears of War 4 in 2017! Halloween is just around the corner with new characters to collect, new weapon skins to earn and some spooky-themed events!

Following that, we’ll be leading into our month-long celebration of the 11th Anniversary of Gears of War! November is going to be jam-packed with things to do and new things to collect all in the midst of our launch on Xbox One X and we can’t wait to share more.

Before You Go

We have a few tips to share for those of you ready to jump in to our October Update.

Our October Update makes further optimizations to the storage it requires on your hard drive for both Xbox One and Windows 10. Expect a bigger download, but even with the new content delivered in this Update, your overall file size for Gears 4 will be smaller than it is today.

The October Update also requires the latest Xbox One Console Update. To download this Update in advance of the Gears of War 4 October Update, head to Settings -> Updates to manually update your console.

Planning on picking up an Xbox One X? You can pre-download our Xbox One X Enhanced content before you own your console by going to System -> Download 4K Game Content. Once this Update releases, you’ll be able to manually download the content for easy transfer (via external HDD or local network) once your console joins your Xbox family.

Don’t forget that only the Xbox One X has the power to take advantage of our Enhanced content, so please do not toggle this option if you’re not planning to upgrade. You’ll just be taking up storage space!

Have a great weekend Gears fans – we’ll see you on Monday to battle it out on Lift Apex and Fuel Depot!

5G and the Route to Digital Transformation

5G and the Route to Digital Transformation

5G and the Route to Digital Transformation

By Derek McManus, COO at Telefonica UK

Two years ago we wanted to show how, through the power of connectivity and digital technology, the public and private sectors could work together to deliver tangible benefits to not only local communities, but local economies too.

So, towards the end of 2015 we ran a three month digital engagement programme in St Helens in Merseyside, in collaboration with the council.  The programme included rolling out improved 4G connectivity, high-speed wifi in the town centre, providing ‘digital makeover’ sessions for local businesses not embracing technology; and running health checks to help digitally engaged businesses use tech better and smarter.

The programme was a flagship initiative for O2 reaching over 42,000 people, with research by Development Economics finding that the measures within the three month pilot period could inject an additional £46.3m in to the St Helens economy by 2020 – representing 10% additional growth compared with current economic trajectory for the town over that period. It’s a fantastic example of the transformative potential of digital connectivity.

Recently, 5G has been mooted as a next generation technology that will accelerate both transformation and positive change across the UK. Our own research tells us that an effective rollout of 5G connectivity will add over £7 billion a year to the economy by 2026, and that it will promise a far quicker return on investment than fibre broadband.

Consumers and businesses alike will benefit from increased speeds and greater capacity. But whilst 5G has the potential to offer a range of unprecedented benefits – from remote healthcare applications to connected cars and smart cities – these benefits are some way off. And, more importantly, we won’t be able to reap the rewards of these benefits unless we lay the right foundations now.

Our work in St Helen’s demonstrates just how much can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together to achieve a common goal. It requires collective investment and collaboration from both sides, but the results are considerable.

In order for 5G to deliver on the digital transformation it promises, we need to adopt a similar approach. Partnerships are needed between operators, national and local government, enterprise and communities to create a framework that facilitates the efficient and effective deployment of mobile networks. A more supportive planning regime that permits operators to roll out digital infrastructure faster and more cost effectively is also essential.

At O2, we invest more than £2 million every day towards improving our network infrastructure throughout the UK. By working together to accelerate the rollout of digital infrastructure, we can meet the demands of our customers, encourage economic prosperity and prepare the UK – its households and its businesses – for the digital future.

Don’t pay for a phone you already own

Don’t pay for a phone you already own

Don’t pay for a phone you already own

Citizens Advice’s announcement today highlights that some mobile phone networks are overcharging customers by continuing phone payments even when they own the phone. However, since launch in April 2013, the ground-breaking O2 Refresh tariff has transformed the way people buy mobile phones by separating the cost of their phone from the cost of their minutes, texts and data. Giving customers transparency over what they’re charged, O2 Refresh allows customers to change devices whenever they want, when they pay off the balance on their device. Once they’ve paid off their device, their bill automatically lowers.

Mobile phone contracts on other networks often combine the cost of the tariff and handset, meaning the costs are not always split. This means that many customers don’t know when they have paid off the cost of their handset. In light of today’s news about some mobile network operators overcharging customers, O2 is calling on the industry to increase the transparency and flexibility of its tariffs. This will help consumers better understand and control their costs.

The reduced bills and increased flexibility shows O2 Refresh as one of the most transparent contracts on the market, especially for customers who want control over their monthly bill, to upgrade early or, crucially, keep their phone beyond their initial contract.
