Inclusion in action: enabling transformative change with accessible technologies

Inclusion in action: enabling transformative change with accessible technologies

Leading up to International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, we’re unveiling a new video series celebrating six individuals who are using accessible technologies to help transform their lives. We’re excited to start today with a video about Andrew, an eight-year-old boy with dyslexia who read for the first time this summer with the help of Microsoft Learning Tools. Follow these stories at aka.ms/InclusionInAction.

There are more than 1 billion people on the planet who live with disabilities, and there continue to be barriers to their full participation in school, home and the workplace. In the U.S., youths with disabilities drop out of school at higher rates than the general population, and the unemployment rate for adults with disabilities is twice that of those with no disability. We believe the best outcomes are realized when every person is empowered to contribute their unique perspectives at work, school and home, and accessible technologies play a key role in making that a reality.

At Microsoft, our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.  We aim to build technologies that make it easier for people with disabilities to create, communicate and work together. We partner with Diversity and Inclusion Officers, Assistive Technology Coordinators, and Special Educators – experts in their fields – to help create more inclusive learning environments and workplaces. Feedback from these partners led us to introduce new Ease of Access settings in Windows 10 like Color Filters, deliver innovative technologies like Microsoft Learning Tools and Microsoft Translator for Education, and improve existing capabilities like Accessibility Checker in Office 365.

These partnerships are part of our inclusive design approach that puts people at the center of product design, helping deliver new insights, identify new challenges and ultimately create more universally beneficial products. Since this became a core part of design at Microsoft, we have seen people with disabilities lead the creation of our own innovative technologies, like Eye Control in Windows 10 and Seeing AI on iOS. Of course, while we are fully focused on ensuring our technologies are usable by every person, ensuring compliance with global accessibility standards is equally important. Visit the Microsoft Trust Center to learn how our products help organizations meet requirements such as US Section 508 and the EN 301 549 standard.

Today and in the weeks ahead, you will have the opportunity to hear the stories of the six amazing individuals below who are pushing the boundaries and achieving great things. We’re on a journey at Microsoft to design, build and launch more accessible products to foster digital inclusion. While we still have plenty of work ahead of us, it’s stories like these that inspire us to keep innovating across our product portfolio. I invite you to join us on this journey as we celebrate inclusion in action. Tune into aka.ms/InclusionInAction each week to meet the following people:

5 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holiday Season

5 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holiday Season

5 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holiday SeasonThis is one of my absolute favorite times of the year—every week there are fun parties and get-togethers and festive events to attend. It’s hard not to just be in a constantly good mood from Halloween until the new year! But even though I don’t want to miss out on the cheer, I also want to feel good and healthy throughout the holidays. Here’s how I try to keep it all balanced.

5 Ways to Keep the Holidays Healthy

Be choosy about splurges: One of the toughest things about this time of year is that there are plates of cookies and candies lurking around every corner. And they all look so good! I know I can’t have them all, so I get really selective about when I treat myself. I wait for things someone made by hand (and with love) and really savor each bite.

Stay on top of steps: Now is not the time to forget about being active. If anything, I try to boost my step count this time of year! No matter what I’m doing that day, I put on my Fitbit Alta HR (it’s so chic and goes with pretty much anything). That way if I’m running from store to store or winding my way through the grocery store, my steps count.

Sneak in exercise when you can: If a crazy social calendar means I can’t fit in my usual workout, I don’t just write the day off completely. I still try to walk as much as I can, take the stairs whenever possible, and fit in mini workouts with moves like lunges, squats, and triceps dips wherever I can find a private space.

Add some extra motivation: There are a lot of reasons to skip my workouts this season, so I give myself a good reason not to: I sign up for a January race. Since I need to train for it, I am forced to schedule in runs no matter how hectic my schedule gets.

Prioritize sleep: If I’m tired, I’m not going to feel great and I’m going to be less likely to exercise and eat well. I keep my bedroom nice and dark and try to take a relaxing bath beforehand to quiet my mind. And I check my Fitbit App in the morning to see how well I slept. If it wasn’t good, I try to be extra careful about avoiding caffeine the next day.

3 Simple Ways to Overcome Sadness

3 Simple Ways to Overcome Sadness

3 Simple Ways to Overcome SadnessEveryone gets cranky now and then. But when you’re in the midst of a total funk, it can be tough to know how to nip it in the bud. First thing’s first: remember that feelings are usually fleeting, and chances are, your bummed-out mood will eventually pass and you’ll find happiness again. But until the gloomy clouds part for good, it’s important to have go-to strategies to make feeling blue more bearable.

“Our emotions and feelings serve as cues to our internal life and they’re important to listen to,” says Los Angeles-based psychotherapist, Alyssa Mass. “Every person, and every situation, is different, but there’s always a balance between honoring and stewing in sadness.”

If you do find yourself stewing, it’s important to have some handy coping skills to help get you through to happier times. Whether you’re healing from heartbreak or are just super hangry, these three science-backed tips can help you weather the storm of a gnarly mood.

1. Get Social

Hitting the party scene is probably the last thing you want to do when you’re feeling down. But ruminating in negative thoughts isn’t the best idea. Besides furthering feelings of loneliness, studies have shown that social isolation can actually have profound effects on physical health, affecting cardiovascular function and sleep. It doesn’t take much to make a connection: meet a close friend or family member for coffee, volunteer for an organization you care about, or take a fun class that will get you out of the house. And if humans are just too much for you to handle in your current state, consider visiting the animal shelter: spending time with a furry friend can significantly cut your stress and boost your mood.

“Small successes are what lead to big gains,” says Mass. “If a party feels like too much, that’s okay—meet a trusted friend somewhere that won’t be triggering (for example, if you’re going through a bad break up, don’t meet them at your old favorite date spot). After you’ve made some efforts to get out of your internal process and connect to the external, take a few deep breaths and try to notice if you feel differently, and take stock of what has or hasn’t changed.”

2. Get Moving

You don’t have to log tons of miles to achieve that coveted “runner’s high” (you also don’t have to actually run): research shows that exercise releases feel-good chemicals in your brain, and reduces the not-so-feel-good chemicals that can worsen depression. Any kind of physical activity can put you on a path toward a better mood, and even sprinkling in short bouts of movement throughout the day can keep you from feeling down.

“Typically, low pressure activities that feel doable are a good place to start,” says Mass. “For example, plan to take a walk around the block before signing up for the marathon. If a person has always hated hiking, this probably isn’t the time to push them into it.”

3. Get Outside

Since you’re already on the move, why not take the action outdoors? Skip the gym and go for a walk in nature. For one study, a Stanford researcher asked 38 city dwellers to take a walk in one of two conditions: in a quiet, green part of campus, or next to a loud Palo Alto freeway. Brain scans and questionnaires indicated the nature walkers experienced some significant mental health improvements while the highway walkers were no less agitated than they’d been before the trek.

It can be hard to motivate yourself when you’re feeling down in the dumps, but by taking just a few simple steps, you can overcome the blues and come out on the other side feeling stronger.

Microsoft 365 security and management features available in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Last week, we shared the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update has begun rolling out to customers and we highlighted some of our favorite features for people who love and use Windows every day.

Windows 10 is running on more than 500 million monthly active devices and continues to gain momentum in enterprises, small businesses and education organizations with 90% growth in commercial devices year over year. In a recent Forrester survey of 482 enterprise global decision makers, they reported that 34% of company-issued PCs are running Windows 10.*

Today, we’re excited to share more about the security and management enhancements we’ve made that empower our commercial customers on their journey to digitally transform and support their Modern Workplace with Microsoft 365. We’re also providing more detail and guidance to IT administrators about how the Fall Creators Update will roll out to our customers in the coming weeks.

Top 10 Security & Management Features in the Fall Creators Update

The cyber threat landscape today requires an ongoing and relentless focus on security, and IT administrators need tools that help them prevent, protect, defend and respond to threats as well as modernize their workplace to empower employee creativity and productivity. Here are a few of our top enhancements for IT in the Fall Creators Update.

  1. Windows AutoPilot is a new cloud service that makes it possible for any PC to be enterprise-ready, with a simple self-service out of box user experience that IT can personalize for their organization and eliminate the need for IT to reimage, touch or manually provision Windows 10. Starting in January 2018, OEM partners Lenovo, HP, Panasonic, Toshiba and Fujitsu will join surface in supporting Windows AutoPilot. Read more about Windows AutoPilot.
  2. Windows Defender Application Guard makes Microsoft Edge the most secure browser for enterprise by hardware isolating the browser away from your apps, data, network and even Windows itself. WDAG protects your Microsoft Edge browsing sessions so if users encounter malware or hacking attempts while online they won’t impact the rest of your PC. Read more about Windows Defender Application Guard.
  3. Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection now provides a ‘single pane of glass’ view across the Windows preventative protection security stack, for better and more manageable protection, detection, investigation and response. The new security analytics dashboard provides recommendations to improve your security posture. In addition, a set of new APIs give you intuitive access to pull data or perform response actions. Read more about Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection.
  4. Windows Defender Application Control is a new solution that leverages the same application control technology from Windows Defender Device Guard, while removing the steep hardware, driver, and kernel mode software requirements. WDAC can run on any Windows 10 capable device with Windows 10 Enterprise and uses the power of the Microsoft Intelligent Security Graph (ISG) to automate the application control list making management easy. Read more about Windows Defender Application Control.
  5. Windows Defender Exploit Guard protects devices from intrusion, contacting malicious locations on the internet, and fileless-based attacks using seemingly innocuous content types, like documents. WDEG includes a rich set of vulnerability mitigation built in to Windows 10 that was previously available in the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit, reducing potential exploits of vulnerabilities in the platform and apps. Read more about Windows Defender Exploit Guard.
  6. Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender Exploit Guard helps protect against viruses and ransomware by only allowing trusted applications to access protected folders and documents. If an unauthorized application, even a new unknown malware variant, attempts to access protected data, it will be denied access even if it manages to get past other defenses. Read more about controlled folder access.
  7. Windows Defender Antivirus enhancements, like new instant protection technology, use the power of the cloud and artificial intelligence built on top of the Microsoft Intelligent Security Graph (ISG) to provide next generation antivirus support to protect customers from quickly evolving polymorphic malware. Read more about Windows Defender Antivirus.
  8. Windows Assigned Access improvements provide the ability to customize and lock down Windows devices to specific tasks or experiences for Firstline Workers and kiosks; and cloud-based tools enable IT to maintain these devices remotely. Organizations can now quickly set up and maintain locked down single purpose devices with improved tools, enabling single app and multi-app uses. Read more about Windows Assigned Access multi-app support.
  9. Windows Hello improvements including new factors such as proximity, location, dynamic lock and Intel Authenticate support make it easier to deploy and more secure. With stolen credentials being one of the leading causes for breaches, moving away from passwords should be a top priority for every organization. Read more about Windows Hello.
  10. Windows 10 Subscription Activation uses AAD entitlement from the cloud making it easier for customers to activate and use all these great features in Windows 10 Enterprise. It enables Windows 10 Pro devices to seamlessly step up to Windows 10 Enterprise without on-premise infrastructure, product keys or reboots based simply on an entitled user logging on. Read more about Windows 10 Subscription Activation.

We’re also helping our enterprise customers with new tools and resources to aid deployments, servicing and compliance.

  • We shared new Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) resources to help our customers accelerate their GDPR compliance with details on security features and capabilities built into Windows 10.
  • We added Device Health to the Windows Analytics suite to help reduce support costs by proactively identifying and remediating top employee-impacting device issues. We also provided enterprise customers with a new diagnostic setting specifically to enable Windows Analytics to provide critical business insights for the maintenance of their device ecosystem.

Now is a great time to get started running pilots within your organization and begin rolling out the Fall Creators Update to stay up to date and current with the latest security protections and management tools.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update phased rollout approach

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update phased rollout approach

Earlier this week we began a targeted rollout of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and I shared with you how to get it. Today, I’d like to share more details on how we will roll out this feature update to Windows 10 devices, including PCs, phones and IoT devices.

Our goal is to deliver feature updates to you as quickly as possible, while providing you with the best possible update experience.

Phased Rollout Approach

The Fall Creators Update begins rolling out to newer devices tested by us and our device partners. By starting with machines which we believe will have the best update experience, we are able to get focused feedback on application compatibility and how Windows works with the rich ecosystem of available peripherals like Bluetooth devices or cameras. Additionally, we closely monitor feedback from fans and early adopters, through programs like Windows Insiders and Windows Insider for Business, in addition to feedback from our OEM device partners, and customers like you! This helps us determine when to accelerate the release to additional devices. We repeat this process until all compatible devices running Windows 10 worldwide are offered the Fall Creators Update.

We believe this approach provides the highest quality update experience for all our customers.

With this feature update we’ve increased the number of Windows 10 devices we’ve tested in advance with our OEM device and ISV app partners. You can view some of these devices here, which includes the newest Windows Mixed Reality-ready PCs enabled by the Fall Creators Update!

Phased rollout approach (Actual rollout will vary based on user feedback)

Phased rollout approach (Actual rollout will vary based on user feedback)

The Fall Creators Update is the most secure version of Windows 10

Being on the latest version of Windows 10, the Fall Creators Update, provides the latest security protections to help keep you safer, and provides you with the latest features and capabilities.

As I outlined in June, Windows 10 continuously improves its built-in protection capabilities to harden its security platform against unwanted threats and malicious malware. In particular, with this update we’ve added protection against ransomware, which holds your files hostage until you pay to get them back. Read here to learn more about other new features in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. If you want to know which system your device is running, you can check here.

Given these built-in security protections and the importance of keeping devices secure, being up-to-date is more important than ever. We’re glad to be seeing devices are staying up-to-date with the latest feature update faster than ever, with most devices running the latest feature update within 6 months of the release.

Semi-Annual Channel released

For our commercial customers, the release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) on October 17th marks the start of the Semi-Annual Channel and starts the 18-month servicing timeline. As a reminder, the Semi-Annual Channel is our newly aligned terminology with Office 365 ProPlus for the twice-yearly feature update releases that replaces Windows Current Branch (CB) and Current Branch for Business (CBB) concepts.

Just as we’re rolling out the Fall Creators Update in phases, we recommend IT administrators do the same. Start with targeted deployments to validate that apps, devices and infrastructure used by your organization work well with the new release. Then continue your deployment to more and more devices based on the results from your initial targeted deployments. Devices configured to take advantage of Windows Update for Business (WUfB) will be automatically migrated to this Semi-Annual Channel feature update based on your WUfB configurations. For more details on Semi-Annual Channel servicing, see our TechNet blog.

Empowering our enterprise customers to stay up-to-date

We continue to see great momentum as enterprise customers move to Windows 10. Our operating system (OS) is designed with compatibility in mind and with services like Windows Analytics that enable enterprise administrators to reduce IT costs and keep devices up-to-date with confidence.

Windows Analytics provides a suite of free services that analyze the applications and devices in your environment to assess upgrade readiness, identify potential disruptions and provide actionable insights to proactively address them. These services allow IT professionals to build confidence in their upgrade readiness, drastically simplify their validation processes and reduce the effort required to deploy, service and support Windows 10. You can read more about the new security and management enhancements on the Windows for Business blog.

Additionally, I’m happy to announce that we’ve reduced the download size for feature updates. For customers updating from the Windows 10 Creators Update via Windows Update or Windows Update for Business to the Fall Creators Update, it will be approximately 25% smaller thanks to differential downloads!

We hope you enjoy the Fall Creators Update. As always you can tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via the Feedback Hub app.
