Tuesday 7th November, London: British actress Georgina Campbell and film broadcaster, Edith Bowman, joined the EE Rising Star Award jury to help choose the shortlist for the 2018 award.
Now in its thirteenth year, recipients of the EE Rising Star Award continue to read like a who’s who of the acting world with all past nominees and winners enjoying major box office success. It is the only award at the esteemed ceremony to be voted for by the British public and previous winners include James McAvoy, Eva Green, Juno Temple, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Noel Clarke, Jack O’Connell, Will Poulter, John Boyega and last year’s winner, Tom Holland.
Meeting at BAFTA’s headquarters at 195 Piccadilly, London, the jury debated which five nominees deserve to go head to head and face the public vote ahead of the 2018 British Academy Film Awards. The shortlist will be announced on Thursday 4th January and the winner will be revealed at the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 18th February.
Alongside Georgina Campbell and Edith Bowman, the jury featured a stellar line up of industry experts who gathered to discuss the longlist. Once again chaired by producer, Marc Samuelson, the jury also included BAFTA award-winning director Philippa Lowthorpe; Murder on the Orient Express, Cinderella, Pirates of the Caribbean and Testament of Youth casting director, Lucy Bevan; renowned casting director for The Boy In Striped Pyjamas, Philomena, Layer Cake and The Constant Gardener, Leo Davis; esteemed producer of Bhaji on the Beach, Looking for Langston and Young Soul Rebels, Nadine Marsh-Edwards alongside leading film and arts journalists.
Georgina Campbell said: “When BAFTA called and asked me to join this year’s EE Rising Star Award panel, I was delighted. It’s been a busy few weeks making sure I’ve watched all of the films and it’s been interesting watching them from a slightly different perspective, considering each of the actors as potential nominees. The calibre of talent this year is really high so it will be very interesting to see how today’s voting went and who has made the shortlist.”
Edith Bowman said: “It’s wonderful to be back for a second year. The EE Rising Star award is such an exciting and important category at the BAFTAs, enthusing about new talent and giving film fans the chance to get involved in the voting.”

The award was created in honour of the late Mary Selway. A highly respected, BAFTA award-winning casting director, whose career spanned three decades and more than ninety films. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen’s most memorable characters.
The EE Rising Star nominees will be announced on Thursday 4th January, at which point public voting will open and be available to all UK residents.
