With the development of cloud technologies, we have become very familiar with public cloud and private cloud. Hybrid cloud may seem new, but it has become a widely recognized direction for development in recent years because it combines the advantages of public cloud (high scalability, low cost) and private cloud (outstanding security, reliability, and performance).
A qualified hybrid cloud must provide answers to the following questions:
- How can I ensure high performance of core services running on the public cloud? Public clouds should be more than just being used as the backup and archiving medium for core services.
- How can my business ensure efficient and reasonable mobility of data on- and off-premises, always placing data in proper locations?
- Is it possible to simplify management on both public and private clouds, helping avoid extra management workloads caused by heterogeneous architectures?
To address these issues, Huawei released the Dedicated Enterprise Storage Service (DESS) on HUAWEI CLOUD and the Storage as a Service (STaaS) solution last year.
DESS allows enterprises to move core services to the cloud without modification
Many enterprises are reluctant to put mission-critical services and data on the cloud due to concerns about data security and performance. HUAWEI CLOUD has a proven track record when providing security and performance, evident in many success cases.
Based on Huawei’s enterprise storage, DESS provides the same performance and reliability as private cloud environments, supporting key application scenarios such as Oracle RAC and SAP HANA TDI, making it easier for enterprises to deploy key applications on the public cloud.
Since its release in September 2017, DESS has successfully supported the deployment of key applications of many large enterprises and government agencies. After a large pharmaceutical enterprise migrated its ERP system to the DESS, the time for generating its financial statements reduced from several days to several hours, improving the business analysis and decision-making efficiency by dozens of times.
The STaaS solution manages resources on- and off-premises in a unified manner
The STaaS solution focuses on storage resource management and data mobility on- and off-premises. It can manage all types of storage devices in local data centers and interconnect with HUAWEI CLOUD to manage all resources on one interface, eliminating the need for switchover between interfaces.
In addition, the STaaS solution provides various storage service catalogs, regardless of whether the storage resources are in local or cloud data centers. All storage configurations, like creating volumes, file sharing, active-active, volume backup, and volume replication, can be performed automatically. KIO, the largest ISP in Mexico, adopts the STaaS solution to centrally manage and schedule storage resources of multiple data centers, reducing manual workloads and improving work efficiency by more than 50%.
New storage backbone of hybrid cloud: OceanStor F V5
Huawei’s new OceanStor F V5 all-flash storage systems adopt Huawei’s SSDs, delivering up to 6 million IOPS with 1 ms latency, meeting the highest performance requirements of enterprises’ core services. The gateway-free converged active-active technology built inside ensures 99.9999% availability. By integrating capabilities of managing flash, NAS, and heterogeneous storage systems, this system is capable of supporting various services in private cloud environments.
In a hybrid cloud environment, OceanStor F V5 has many unique advantages. Because DESS is based on Huawei’s enterprise storage, which adopts the same operating system as OceanStor F V5, OceanStor F V5 can seamlessly interconnect with DESS. The backup and replication technologies built inside the arrays can back up or replicate data to the public cloud on demand, enabling quick rollout of services on the public cloud.
Leveraging the unified management and scheduling capabilities of STaaS, OceanStor F V5 can work closely with DESS to address the challenges mentioned at the beginning of this article: allowing key services to run on a private or public cloud on demand, allowing service data to move freely between clouds, and always putting data at the right locations. Huawei OceanStor F V5 is paving the way for cloud transformation of enterprises.
