What are your main checkboxes when it comes to looking for a new smartphone? For most people, battery life comes pretty high up on the list, alongside the knowledge that the phone does more than just make calls, send texts and browse the web – that it does something a little bit special. If those are among your main priorities, let us present: the Moto Z2 Play.
The Z2 Play is a big battery monster with a very unique set of skills, and it’s now available at Vodafone UK. Here’s everything you need to know…
1. Spec sheet
Display: 5.5-inch Super AMOLED, 1080p
Rear camera: 12-Megapixel, f/1.7, dual tone flash
Front camera: 5-Megapixel, f/2.2, dual tone flash
Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 626, 2.2 GHz
Storage: 32 or 64GB, expandable
Battery: 3,000mAh
Operating system: Android 7.1.1 (Nougat)
Let’s get the core specs out of the way first, then head onto that which makes this phone really stand out from the pack. The Z2 Play boasts a stunning 5.5-inch Super AMOLED 1080p display, which means colours are vivid, blacks are pitch, and it gets plenty bright enough to see in bright sunlight.
Underneath that screen is an octa-core Snapdragon 626 processor with 4GB of RAM, which means it’ll chew through any apps and games you throw at it. It runs on Android 7.1.1. Nougat (with an update to Oreo on the way), and boasts 32GB or 64GB of storage, which you can expand via MicroSD. It’s also dual-SIM, which means you can keep your work and personal SIM cards in the same device.
Camera-wise, we’re looking at a hugely-capable 12-Megapixel sensor around back, with laser autofocus and dual tone flash for more natural looking night shots, and a 5-Megapixel front-facing cam with its own flash module for late night selfies.
And then there’s the battery…
2. Battery
Those in the know will note that the Snapdragon 626 isn’t Qualcomm’s flagship chipset, but don’t let that put you off; it’s still a really powerful and meaty processor but – crucially – it’s incredibly power efficient.
When you combine the long-term performance that brings with the power-saving tweaks in Android Nougat and a huge 3000mAh battery, you end up with a phone that’ll see you through 30 hours on average. In short? This is a phone that’ll let you live away from the wall charger without worry – you’ll likely make it through two days with normal usage.
Want even more juice? The ace up the Moto Z2 Play’s sleeve has a very special way of going the extra mile…
3. Moto Mods
The idea of ‘modular’ smartphones – where the core features of the phone can be added to or swapped out with extras – has been around as a concept for a number of years. A few manufacturers have tried, but no one’s really managed to hit a homerun like Moto (under new owners Lenovo).
See those little metal pins at the bottom of the back of the Z2 Play? They’re a feature found on every Z range Moto phone, and they allow for a series of ingenious ‘Moto Mod’ accessories to slap seamlessly on the back and gift a raft of super powers.
There are a bunch of official Moto Mods already on the market, with more coming soon. Here’s just a few:
Moto TurboPower Pack
The Z2 Play already has a monster battery that can – under the right circumstances – see you through two full days, but add this battery pack and you’ll get another 24 hours on top. With this on its back, the Z2 Play makes for the ultimate festival phone.
Moto 360 Camera
Bring your shots into a whole new dimension with a 360º camera that can capture everything around you in a single pic, ready for sharing across your social network du jour.
JBL Soundboost 2
The Soundboost 2 turns your phone into a mini boombox, adding a deep, rich and powerful speaker to help you get the party started. It’s also got its own battery that’ll see you through 10 hours of music playback before it touches any of the Z2 Play’s juice.
Moto Style Shell with Wireless Charging
Hate wires? Add this thin and light style shell to gift the Moto Z2 Play wireless charging powers – just plonk it down on any Qi-compatible charging pad and you’ll be topped up in no time.
There are more mods on the horizon – including a snap-on gamepad and an InstaPrint mod for turning your photos into physical prints as soon as you’ve taken them – and even more coming by way of savvy developers using the open source Moto Mods development kit. Lenovo has promised to support the platform for at least the next couple of years, too, which means the sky’s the limit.
Sound good? You can grab your Moto Z2 Play from Vodafone UK here, while our range of Moto Mods is coming soon!
