Since September, people in social media groups have begun to tighten their belts. They are refusing to go out for dinner and also to buy things. More importantly, some people are rejecting activities that cost more than 2 RMB. What is causing this? On Chinese Singles’ Day, or “Double 11″—the Chinese version of Black Friday that falls on November 11—shoppings carts are being filled non-stop with things as large as furniture and electrical appliances and as small as snacks and beverages. Preparation is everything. Shopping will commence as soon as it reaches 00:00 on November 11. As a result, online retailers have to make great efforts to be prepared. With wave after wave of sales strategies, from coupons to electronic red envelopes, the volume of pre-sales alone has already multiplied.
For online retailers, the doubling of orders not only doubles the profit, but also indicates that hundreds of thousands of concurrent transactions may occur on the network. As a result, since Double 11 became a shopping holiday, it has become a huge test for networks. The holiday is a key test especially for the data center networks that form the cornerstone of enterprise networks. Facing the imminent test of Double 11, how can online retailers easily cope with a traffic peak of thousands of Gbit/s and hundreds of thousands of concurrent transactions?
Key Test 1: Highly Reliable Products and High-Quality Solution
When building a mall, the priority is to lay a solid and reliable foundation. Networks are the same. A highly reliable data center is key to network assurance, especially when vast numbers of people are accessing the network, as is the case during Double 11. Last year, for example, an e-commerce platform generated 170,000 transactions per second. This huge quantity of services generated a peak traffic of 1600 Gbit/s. The speed and experience of consumers’ online transactions directly affect the retailers’ sales volumes and the reputation of e-commerce platforms.
The data center constructed by Huawei’s CloudFabric cloud data center network solution and CloudEngine flagship core switches is stable and reliable, laying a solid foundation for networks:
- With its open architecture, Huawei’s CloudFabric Solution can easily interconnect with various mainstream cloud platforms, and centrally schedules and collaborates with data center resources such as those of computing, network, and storage. Especially when many customers have multiple data centers in a number of geographical areas, the solution can help e-commerce platform network O&M personnel to seamlessly connect to and manage multiple DC network architectures.
- The CloudEngine 12800 series of core switches, with up to 1032 Tbit/s switching capacity, are the powerful tools for enterprises to transform to the cloud and Internet Plus. Since the launch of these core switches, tens of thousands of devices have been deployed in more than 120 countries around the world and they have a reputation of being of high quality.
Key Test 2: More Intelligent Network and More Secure O&M
In terms of network assurance, working through the night seems to have become commonplace for network O&M personnel. With the rapid development of cloud services, the scale of data centers is continuously expanding. One Internet company, for example, established a data center with a single cluster of 20,000 10GE servers. During Double 11, there are many promotional activities and frequent service changes. If the company continues to use the traditional method of manual configuration and operation by network O&M personnel, even working all through the night may not be enough.
The SDN network and Agile Controller can be leveraged to implement automatic provisioning of network configurations and security policies. Services can be provisioned and adjusted in minutes. Currently, hundreds of enterprises are using Huawei’s CloudFabric and Agile Controller to build next-generation data centers, implementing ultra-simplified deployment of cloud data centers.
Network fault location is the main concern of network O&M personnel. The aspiration of all network O&M personnel should be to visualize network faults so they can be seen with the naked eye.
Huawei FabricInsight intelligent network analysis and O&M platform collects and analyzes real data flows on the entire network to display the association between and health of applications and networks in real time, achieving fault location in minutes.
Huawei CloudFabric uses the Agile Controller to implement automated ultra-simplified deployment, and leverages FabricInsight to implement intelligent ultra-simplified O&M. The solution makes networks more intelligent and allows network O&M personnel to have a more enjoyable Double 11.
Key Test 3: Providing a Comprehensive Strategy and Working with Customers to Guarantee Services
In September, Huawei started assurance work for entire networks in preparation for Double 11. Internet data center (IDC) equipment room assurance, fast spare parts services, network inspection, and traffic forecast are carried out systematically. At the same time, our engineers offer remote attendance, setting up assurance teams to work with you at the front line of the network.
During this year’s Double 11, will your network be ready for a new traffic peak exceeding 1600 Gbit/s?
