Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Masachika Kawata, Series Producer at Capcom, about enhancing Resident Evil 7 biohazard for Xbox One X.

What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Resident Evil 7 biohazard for Xbox One X?

We’ve increased the resolution to provide a sharper image and improved textures in Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also implemented support for Screen-Space Subsurface Scattering (SSSSS), which improves visuals on characters’ skin. Aliasing has also been reduced, allowing 4K displays to benefit from the Xbox One X.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience?

Resident Evil 7 biohazard is all about conveying fear and horror with a heightened sense of immersion. With the visual improvements, the Bakers will become even more realistic and more terrifying, making player interactions with them that much more impressionable. We hope that these enhancements will transport players into the Baker mansion and give them a real sense of dread as though they were exploring the mansion themselves.

Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?

From the very beginning, our focus was on photorealism, right down to scanning real actors to play key roles such as Jack Baker and creating memorable monsters with the sickly design of the Molded enemies. This allowed us to bring players into the world of Resident Evil 7 biohazard and make their interactions with the Baker family meaningful. With the enhancements of Xbox One X, we’re able to create an even more realistic world for players to enjoy.

How do you expect fans of Resident Evil 7 biohazard will respond to seeing on Xbox One X with these enhancements?

Fans will want to put their fears aside for a moment and get up close to the Baker family to see these enhancements in action. Our goal has been to heighten the realism and fear that people feel while playing Resident Evil 7 biohazard, and with these enhancements, we hope players will visualize themselves in the Baker’s mansion, face their fears, and forget that they’re holding a controller for a little while.

How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X?

It’s been a great experience having the opportunity to reach a larger audience with a title we’re very proud of.

What enhancement were you most excited about to explore leveraging for Resident Evil 7 biohazard on Xbox One X?

Aside from 4K support, we felt that HDR visuals really fit well with what we strived to achieve with Resident Evil 7 biohazard. I urge anyone interested to check it out!
