Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Chris Roberts, Creative Director at Stellar Entertainment, about enhancing Burnout Paradise Remastered for Xbox One X.

What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Burnout Paradise Remastered for Xbox One X (textures, draw, framerate, resolution)?

Xbox One X enables us to really boost the visuals. The biggest impact is running at native 4K resolution along with other improvements such as higher-quality shadows, ambient occlusion, texture filtering, increased levels of particles vfx, as well as higher resolution textures, and maintaining a solid 60 frames per second which is essential for Burnout Paradise. The UI artwork and all the in-game textures have been upgraded far beyond the original game including completely recreating the intro and attract sequences with all new assets and footage.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience (visuals, performance)?

The greatly increased clarity and draw distance helps players navigate the world to locate, discover, and better fight other drivers while dodging traffic at insane speeds. Paradise is an insanely varied and diverse driving environment, with some amazing vistas, and we wanted polish them so they shine even more in 4K at a buttery smooth 60 frames per second.

Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?

We wanted to focus on areas that would help the player enjoy the game even more and make it look as good as they remembered it looking. A key target for us was to increase the fidelity of the whole experience to enable players to navigate this amazing driving playground with more clarity than ever before.

How do you expect fans of Burnout Paradise will respond to seeing/playing it on Xbox One X with these enhancements?

We hope fans will get a kick out going back going online and hanging out with their friends and having some insane races, pulling of some crazy stunts and wincing at some of the greatest car crashes in video game history with the game looking and playing even better than they remember. We are also looking forward to whole new generation of players experiencing this remastered driving playground for the first time. It’s been 10 years and Burnout Paradise is still an awesome and unique on and offline experience.

How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X?

The extra power afforded by working on Xbox One X has enabled us to get the game up and running super quickly and the excellent tools have given us a great experience throughout the development.

What enhancement are you most excited about to explore leveraging for Burnout Paradise Remastered on Xbox One X?

Pushing the visual fidelity as far as we could was very exciting to get Burnout Paradise running with all the visual upgrades and combine that with upgrade to 4K and the increased draw distance at 60fps to give players the ultimate version of Paradise to drive round and at insane speeds.

What does 4K and HDR mean for your game, games in the future, and development at your studio?

It’s clear to us after developing this game that playing games in 4K and HDR is by far the best way to experience them and it’s something we will be actively supporting in everything we do.
