Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Ubisoft Quebec Senior Producer Marc-Alexis Cote about enhancing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for Xbox One X.

What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for Xbox One X?

We leverage the power of the Xbox One X globally to achieve a better visual experience and push our content at a higher level of detail. This is something we do across the board, some notable examples in different areas would include:

  • Displaying a denser and richer crowd
  • Improving the Depth of Field effect in dialogues.
  • Allowing higher resolution textures are loaded in a larger radius around the player.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience?

The more details and textures we can display, the better we will immerse the player in our world. For a game such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, this is of course one of our main goals: allow players to experience an authentic recreation of Ancient Greece. The extra power of the Xbox One X allows us to push all that one step further.

Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?

Our goal is to have the same base experience available on all platforms and pushing each one of those platforms to their limits to enhance this experience. In the case of the Xbox One X, there is a lot of RAM that is available and it allows us to do more, even though the game is running in 4K. So getting the best of that extra RAM is how we maximize our possibilities on Xbox One X.

How do you expect fans of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will respond to seeing/playing it on Xbox One X with these enhancements?

With delight! It is difficult to go back once you experience exploring the colorful and contrasted world of Odyssey in 4K HDR. Sailing on your ship in the middle of islands with the sunset on the horizon is quite breathtaking.

How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X?

Developing for Xbox One X has been quite seamless, thanks to the great work done by the Assassin’s Creed Origins team last year.

What enhancement were you most excited about to explore leveraging for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on Xbox One X?

Apart from the obviousness of 4K HDR, I’m quite happy with the denser crowds as they help us fulfill our vision of bringing Ancient Greece to life.

What does 4K and HDR mean for your game, games in the future and development at your studio?

As said above, when you experience them in Odyssey, it’s difficult to go back. It brings the immersion to the next level and it’s especially striking with big and varied open-worlds such as our game.

Thanks to Marc-Alexis Cote for taking the time to chat with us about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. We’ll bring you more interviews with more developers in the future, as well as more on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, so stay tuned to Xbox Wire!
