Welcome to Frenzies, the wildly chaotic and stylishly slick multiplayer shooter, coming to PS VR2!
I’m thrilled to share some more information about Frenzies following its unveiling. If you missed that, here’s our announcement trailer that gives you a taste of Frenzies’ unique blend of fun and chaos:
Make friends, break friends
In Frenzies, you’re thrown into a winner-takes-all showdown across five rounds with a randomized, lucky dip of round types and maps that ensures no two games are ever the same. Frenzies’ mixture of solo and team-based round types means one minute you’ll be forging friendships and working together to pick up a win, and the next you’ll be trying to take those friends down in a frenetic free-for-all.
Right from when we first started working on Frenzies, we wanted it to have a real sense of fun. We didn’t want to create a straight-faced, military sim and instead took our inspiration from bombastic arena shooter classics such as Quake and Unreal Tournament. We felt that by taking the essence of those games and sprinkling in a dose of unpredictability, we’d landed on something that’s easy to play, challenging to master and leaves you with a big grin on your face every time. We think that there’s something for everyone in Frenzies and even experienced VR shooter fans will have their skills tested in new ways.
Our round types also play a huge role in building this sense of fun. Alongside traditional modes like Team Deathmatch, we got creative to build new round types around some interesting concepts that make great use of VR. My personal favorite is Glitter Pig, where you’re running around trying to grab hold of this giant, squealing pig. You’ve got to be the one holding the pig for the longest time throughout the round but that’s easier said than done when your opponents can easily track you down and your big porky friend.
VR pedigree that’s made for multiplayer
Across nDreams’ family of studios, we’ve been pioneering VR game development for over a decade, including the acclaimed ‘Run-and-Cover’ gameplay that featured in the award-winning Fracked and Synapse.’ Run-and-Cover’ feels satisfying and tactile but also highly intuitive thanks to the power of VR and we wanted to bring it into multiplayer with Frenzies.
Multiplayer works incredibly well in VR – you’re in a shared physical space with other players, able to collaborate, compete, and interact with each other and the environment in many ways.
One of my favorite ways that we’ve really leaned into this with Frenzies is through gestures, replicated 1:1 in-game. Gestures enhance both the tactical depth and the social interaction of each match. For instance, you can communicate with your team-mates using hand signals, taunt opponents with certain ‘expressive’ gestures, or even engage in a quick game of rock, paper, scissors. We’re excited to see these types of interactions play out in Frenzies.
Express yourself
In Frenzies, everything is dialed up to 11, from the neon-soaked arenas to the oversized weapons and you’ll need to match this energy when you step into the arena. Unpredictability reigns supreme in this game and humility will get you nowhere so flaunting your victories and taunting your rivals isn’t just allowed – it’s encouraged.
Showboating only works if you look good doing it and nothing screams bravado more than the ultimate killer suit – the onesie. Our onesies are colorful and playful, and you can choose from dozens of designs to customize your onesie and express yourself through a unique visual identity. Team your onesie with a digital face, gloves, and kicks to create a look that will turn heads in the arena… right before you land that perfect headshot.
We’ve got so much more to share in the coming months so be sure to wishlist the game now on PlayStation Store. Until then, start picking out your dream onesie and we’ll see you in the arena soon.
