Train Sim World 2: LGV Méditerranée: Marseille - Avignon

Building the 93 km route

This is the longest route to date for Train Sim World 2. This means we’ve had to look to new tools and new ways to build the scenery. Traditionally we build our routes by hand. The craftsmanship is no different to how building a model railway would be. For example, if you want a tree you place a tree, now multiply that by 60 scale miles and that gives an idea of the weight of work the environment teams take on. With this route we’ve used a new tool that allows us to autogenerate some content to give our environment team a canvas to start from, allowing us to retain a handcrafted feel, but build bigger routes.

Real world locations

Once the scenery and track is laid, our team will start to work on creating the familiar structures and stations on the route. Each of these has been carefully recreated to match the real-world locations. As you drive the route you’ll be travelling from the historic 12 platform Marseille-Saint Charles, originally opened in 1848, to the ultra-modern Avignon TGV with its ‘cathedral of glass’ that runs along the platform edge. You’ll also pass by familiar structures like Aix-En Provence station and drive over the huge 1.7 km Ventabren Viaduct.

High-speed rollercoaster

This will be our fastest route on Train Sim World 2 at an incredible 320 Km/h. It is the first route that we’ve done that deploys the TVM430 cab signaling system and also uses the French KVB in-cab signaling system. Along with multiple different braking systems used on this locomotive these are critical to maintaining safe control as you race through the French countryside. You need to plan ahead to get accurate station stops.

And, if travelling at high-speed isn’t enough, this route is an absolute rollercoaster – featuring some of the fiercest gradients you can imagine. You will fall and climb across the route as you travel between stations, with fast changes between 3.5% gradients. This kind of gradient can be big on any normal route, but when you’re travelling at 320 km/h these become a tense challenge as you battle the adhesion physics.

Recreating the TGV Duplex

The star of this DLC is the TGV Duplex, rebuilt here and using the official Carmillion livery in conjunction with SNCF this locomotive is one of the most complex we have built for Train Sim World 2. The multiple safety and braking systems have been recreated in authentic detail alongside the power systems, pantograph and underlying technical elements that define how the locomotive feels and reacts to both your input and the environment. We use a custom tool called Simugraph to simulate the internal physics of our trains and this one has around 100 different nodes that work together to recreate the TGV Duplex.
