Creating and Sharing Value by Commercializing IoT on a Large Scale

It is time to begin large-scale commercialization of the IoT for industries ranging from public utilities to smart manufacturing and the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), according to Jiang Wangcheng, President of IoT Solutions, Huawei Technologies, Ltd. Jiang spoke at the IoT Solutions World Congress 2017 (IoTSWC 2017), held in Barcelona, Spain, October 3 to 5.

By Shi Jinfan

The IoTSWC is the leading international event dedicated exclusively to joining IoT solution providers with industries and providing disruptive IoT technologies for vertical industries.

Jiang, who spoke at the plenary session, added that “Huawei focuses on ICT technologies to provide more convenient, more secure, and more efficient IoT, and collaborates with partners to create and share value by commercializing IoT on a large scale.”

Creating and Sharing Value by Commercializing IoT on a Large Scale

As one of the sponsors for this year’s event, Huawei showcased its end-to-end IoT solutions and technologies. These included NB-IoT chipsets and modules, lightweight IoT operating system (Huawei LiteOS), OceanConnect IoT Platform, ‘3T+1M’ (3 Technologies + 1 Management) in-depth IoT security protection system, Edge Computing IoT (EC-IoT) Solution, and enterprise Long-Term Evolution (eLTE) Solution. Moreover, Huawei has shared its success cases in the realms of public utilities, smart manufacturing, and the IoV, etc.

At the HUAWEI CONNECT 2017 held from September 5 to 7 in Shanghai, China, Huawei rolled out its IoT cloud service. Huawei’s OceanConnect IoT Platform-based cloud service supports cloud-and-device collaboration for easy integration of massive numbers of devices and complete, efficient device management that includes visualized device management, remote firmware upgrading, and end-to-end fault location. Huawei’s IoT cloud service also supports flexible, open application enablement services, and provides cloud service suites for specific industry sectors, such as public utilities, smart home, and IoV, thus accelerating industry application development and provisioning of new services.

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) has become a mainstream communications technology in the fields of public utilities, white appliances, shared bikes, the Internet of Cows (IoC), and the Internet of Sheep (IoS), etc. With the continuous evolution of NB-IoT standards, chipsets/modules, network deployment, and device development, as well as industry applications and ecosystems have become mature in an all-around manner.

“By the end of 2017, the shipment of Huawei Boudica NB-IoT chipsets will reach 10 million units,” Jiang said. “In terms of device application, the shipment of devices in many vertical industries such as shared bikes, cow monitoring, smart metering, and white appliances will exceed 100,000, and even will reach millions. Over 30 NB-IoT networks will be constructed in more than 20 countries and regions around the world, and the number of base stations will exceed 500,000.” China has taken a lead in propelling NB-IoT industry development, offering great support for NB-IoT network construction. In China alone, it is expected that some 1.5 million NB-IoT network base stations will be built by 2020.

In the area of smart manufacturing, Huawei Elevators Connection Solution uses Huawei’s EC-IoT gateways to quickly connect elevator controllers with various sensors, collect elevator running data, and perform pre-analysis based on a local lightweight data analysis model. In this way, potential faults can be detected, and the elevator downtime can be significantly reduced. The Huawei Elevators Connection Solution enables service and business model innovations from start to finish in many scenarios, such as industrial backhaul, electric power, smart cities, on-vehicle applications, and smart media, helping customers accelerate their pace of digitalization.

In other innovative applications, Huawei eLTE Smart Factory Solution supports unlicensed frequencies. Huawei’s integrated narrowband and broadband, multi-service wireless networks enable flexible access of diverse devices, implementing unified management and Operations and Maintenance (O&M).

Creating and Sharing Value by Commercializing IoT on a Large Scale

Both the Huawei Elevators Connection Solution and Huawei eLTE Smart Factory Solution are able to meet customers’ needs to improve production efficiency and environmental protection, in order to complete the digital transformation of their enterprises. By the end of 2017, more than one million units of manufacturing equipment will be connected using Huawei devices.

In the area of the IoV, Huawei provides a device-pipe-cloud collaboration solution for vehicle vendors to become service-centric enterprises. Huawei’s OceanConnect IoT Platform plays a pivotal role in this solution. At IoTSWC 2017, Huawei exhibited its connected car suites based on the OceanConnect IoT Platform, which helps solution partners quickly develop Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) industry applications. Huawei is now deeply partnering with many large vehicle vendors in the area of the IoV, helping them construct unified IoV platforms that can be customized on demand and are capable of efficiently managing different types of vehicles. With these IoV platforms, vehicle vendors can provide globalized services. By the end of 2017, up to 500,000 vehicles will use Huawei’s technologies to provide IoV services.

Creating and Sharing Value by Commercializing IoT on a Large Scale

The IoT has already entered the era of large-scale commercialization, and the IoT industry becomes mature step by step. Huawei has constructed OpenLabs across the globe. In these labs, Huawei collaborates on product development with partners around the world. The goal is to help industries quickly complete processes from conception to reference design, and verification to rollout. In this way, Huawei can create and share great value with customers and partners by bringing the IoT into the era of large-scale commercialization.

Get the latest on building the innovative apps of the future right now – at Connect(); 2017

The inspiration for our Connect(); event has always been about developers and the innovative applications they create. I am excited to announce our popular and highly anticipated Connect(); 2017 returns Nov. 15-17.

From the earliest days of computing, developers have shaped the future and changed the world. We’re at a critical inflection point where cloud, data and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing how humans interact with technology. Connect(); 2017 will show how we’re empowering developers to lead this new digital revolution by creating apps that will have a profound impact on the world.

Executive Vice President Scott Guthrie, alongside leading industry innovators, will share what’s next for developers across a broad range of Microsoft and open source technologies. In addition to live streaming the keynote from New York City, we have over 75 engineering-led, on-demand sessions and live hands-on training planned for this year’s event.

Whether you are creating cloud native-applications, targeting the edge of devices and Internet of Things, infusing your apps with AI, or just getting started, Connect(); 2017 will equip you with the tools and skills you need to build the apps of the future.

I hope you will tune in and join us in November for what promises to be our best Connect(); yet!
