What 5G NR technology inventions are becoming a reality in 2019?

By now, we have a good idea what 5G is envisioned to be – a unifying connectivity fabric that will connect virtually everything and a platform for future innovation that will support existing and future services that are not even known today. But what will 5G bring in the immediate term – in 2019 when we start to see commercial 5G NR (New Radio) network deployments?

Consumers today demand richer mobile experiences and operators are looking for ways to more efficiently deliver better services. And early 5G deployments will enable just that. Starting  from the ongoing 3GPP Release 15 work, 5G NR is being designed to bring new levels of mobile broadband performance and efficiency, delivering more capacity, faster throughput, lower latency, and better reliability and network flexibility. All these enhancements will be powered by a a combination of key 5G technologies, and here is a quick peek at a few key 5G NR inventions:

  • Flexible framework: the new air interface design supports both scalable numerology and transmission time intervals that can dynamically adapt to a wide range of service, deployment, and spectrum requirements.
  • Low latency subframe: along with the flexible framework the new subframe structure coupled with faster device and network feedback plays a critical role in enabling low latency services, improving spectral efficiency, robustness and user experience.
  • New channel coding: new channel coding scheme such as LDPC provides robust performance and flexibility that can scale to support multi-Gbps data rates with improved energy and chip area efficiency.
  • Massive MIMO:  utilizing more antennas in the base station and advanced reciprocity based multi-user beamforming improves capacity and service uniformity, while also opening the door to more sub-6 GHz spectrum bands.
  • Millimeter wave:  using millimeter wave for fixed applications is nothing new, but mobilizing it is a completely different story. Advanced beam switching and beam tracking antenna processing techniques will bring 5G NR millimeter wave into  smartphones in 2019.

New Whitepaper & Webinar

And we are well on our way to make 5G NR a reality starting in 2019. During Mobile World Congress Americas a few weeks ago, we launched a joint whitepaper with Nokia that not only discussed the cosumer expectations for 5G, but also the simulation results from a recent co-siting coverage study on 5G NR mmWave, which provided us with key insights to understand how 5G NR mmWave can be deployed cost-effectively. In addition, we also announced collaboration with Nokia on interoperability device testing (IoDT) starting in second half of 2017, which will help drive timely wide-scale 5G NR global deployments
