We’re not the first to say it and we won’t be last, but it’s true: we’re living in a golden age when it comes to TV. With competition between streaming services hotting up – and budgets matching those of Hollywood movies – television has never been better.

To prove it, and to prove that the last couple of years have been no fluke, we’ve been taking a good long look at what’s coming up in 2018. As it turns out, there’s absolutely loads to look forward to.

Netflix

Maniac
Jonah Hill and Emma Stone reunite for the first time since 2007’s Superbad in Maniac, a darkly comic series about a mental institution inmate who slips into a fantasy world of his own making. It’s based on a 2014 Norwegian series of the same name, and is being helmed by Cary Fukunaga, who directed the first season of True Detective.

The Rain

The Rain is an upcoming Scandi thriller set after a virus has wiped out most of the world’s population. The plot will centre on a young brother and sister as they battle for survival in the post-apocalyptic wastes. Expect dark, gritty nastiness along the lines of 2009’s The Road.

Lost in Space
Danger, Will Robinson! A reboot of the 1965 Sci-Fi classic, Netflix’s Lost in Space will look to modernise that series’ same classic story – of a spacefaring family marooned on a far flung planet. Showrunning duties will be handled by Zack Estrin, whose work on shows like Prison Break suggests he knows how to keep people hooked.

Tidelands
Netflix’s first foray into Australian waters sounds absolutely bonkers, but in the best possible way. Tidelands’ plot revolves around a former criminal who returns to her hometown and gets embroiled in a murder mystery, all while figuring out how and why the townsfolk all seem to be half-human, half-siren monstrosities.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Given the title, you might not be surprised to learn that The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a western. But what should pique any cinephile’s interest is the fact that it’s being written and directed by the Coen Brothers, who know a thing or two about the genre. James Franco is among the show’s roster of stars.

Altered Carbon

Based on the Richard J Morgan novel of the same name, this Cyberpunk Sci-Fi show focusses on futuristic humans who can download and transfer themselves into other people’s bodies. Netflix is pumping some serious money into this, too – a reported $7 million per episode – similar to that of early days Game of Thrones.

Making a Murderer (season 2)
Anyone who found themselves gripped by the true crime story of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey will be pleased to hear that there’s more on the way. The filmmakers behind the incredible Making a Murderer say there’s still much more to the story than meets the eye, so expect to pick things up as the case’s various appeals develop.

Ozark (season 2)

Named after the Missouri lake district of the same name, this acclaimed Jason Bateman and Laura Linney crime drama will be back in 2018 for a further 10 episodes of high stakes crime drama. The show’s first season was a great way to scratch our longstanding Breaking Bad itch, so we can’t wait for more.

Marvel shows on Netflix

Two for the price of one, here; Marvel’s Netflix team have been busy behind the scenes, working on new seasons of both Daredevil (season 3) and Jessica Jones (season 2). There’s more Luke Cage and Iron Fist action slated for 2019, too, ahead of an as-yet unscheduled second Defenders outing.

HBO/Sky Atlantic

Succession
Created by Jesse Armstrong, one half of the writing duo behind Peep Show, Succession takes a sideways look at the ups and downs of an all-powerful, all-American media family. Will Ferrell and longtime collaborator Adam McKay are on the board of producers, which means the show’s in an altogether excellent set of comedic hands.

Westworld (season 2)

We don’t get any Game of Thrones in 2018, but HBO’s got you covered in the big budget drama department with season two of the enthralling Westworld. The Sci-Fi western mashup will pick up directly after the events of the first season, which saw the futuristic park entering into a state of outright robot rebellion.

True Detective (season 3)
After a dazzling first season and a critically panned second, it may surprise some to hear that True Detective is coming back. The plot? “A macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.” We’re more than hopeful.

Amazon Video

Lazarus
Lazarus is an ambitious Sci-Fi show based on the Greg Rucka comic of the same name. Its story centres on a near-future where, instead of nations, 16 rival families control the world. What is a Lazarus? A one-man army that does their family’s bidding. Expect political intrigue and epic action.

Homecoming
It’s rare for a series to get a two-season deal right off the bat, but when you’ve got Julia Roberts in the lead role and a plot based on a wildly popular fictional podcast, you’re probably onto a sure thing. Homecoming is a thriller set in a secret government facility, about a soldier adjusting to normal life and a caseworker unravelling dark secrets.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

The titular operative – most recently played by Tom Cruise on the big screen – is getting his own TV show in 2018. It looks set to be a globe-trotting espionage romp, with The US Office’s Jim (John Krasinski) ditching his affable schtick for something a bit more rough and ready.

The Romanoffs
The new project from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner is an interesting one – an anthology series about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the infamous Russian Romanov family. Each of the eight episodes will have a different cast and plot, but we do know that Diane Lane, Christina Hendricks and Aaron Eckhart are all attached.

BBC

Troy: Fall of a City
A big-budget historical romp made in partnership with Netflix, this adaptation of one of the ancient world’s most famous stories looks set to be a corker of a miniseries. German-born Bella Dayne will play story catalyst Helen of Troy, history’s most beautiful woman. No pressure there, then.

Taboo (season 2)

Tom Hardy was rightly praised for his leading role in Taboo as James Delaney, the trouble-making Londoner who returns to kick up fuss between his inherited business and the East India Company. The show, produced by Ridley Scott, will be back in 2018 for season two, this time set in the US.
