EE NAMED THE UK’S BEST MOBILE NETWORK 21 TIMES IN A ROW – WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU?

EE NAMED THE UK’S BEST MOBILE NETWORK 21 TIMES IN A ROW – WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU?

Performance that is personal

With 98 percent of the UK’s adult population now owning a mobile phone ₁, the quality and reliability of mobile networks are more important, to more people, than ever before. Whether you live in a major city or on a remote Shetland island like  Alice Arthur on Out Skerries, connectivity is critical.

Our mobile devices are personal gateways into our lives and while we may use them in different ways and for different things, we all use them. And that means we are all reliant on our mobile network to deliver the performance we need, when we need it – whether we are at home, in the car, on a train, in a sold-out stadium, or exploring the rural countryside.

To help provide a robust and definitive picture of the performance of the UK’s mobile networks in real-life situations, independent analyst RootMetrics® has spent the last six months conducting 635,000 tests in a variety of locations across every region. In the process they have driven more than 24,000 miles, examined 788 major indoor locations, and completed 22,700 unique tests on every mobile operator’s network – including how they perform in 16 major cities throughout the UK.

They do this to determine which of the UK’s four mobile operators delivers the best network performance, so you know which one you can rely on when it matters – when it is personal.

21 times in a row…and counting

The results from this extensive testing saw EE named the UK’s best mobile network for a record-breaking 21st time in a row. As well as being awarded the best overall network in each individual nation, we were also named the UK’s most reliable mobile network too.

It is a record that stretches back more than ten years and built on us prioritising investment in our network where it matters, to improve its reach and performance. In that time, we have:

  • extended the reach of our 4G network by more than 60,000 square miles (two thirds of the UK’s entire landmass), bringing fast and reliable mobile connectivity to more rural communities than ever before
  • supported more than 350 major festivals, sporting events, and local shows with mobile coverage – including Cheltenham Festival, British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and the Royal Welsh Show
  • installed more than 700 small cells in popular urban areas across the UK to increase network capacity
  • and brought 5G connectivity to 73% of the UK population, including nearly every major UK town and city, the UK’s busiest train stations, the first platforms and tunnels of the London Underground and some of the biggest stadiums – including Wembley, Villa Park and Murrayfield

What does all this mean in reality? Well, it means making a simple phone call every day on EE will give you 30% less call setup failures than any other network. It means with EE you get access to the UK’s best network for video performance, as well as getting the most consistent download speeds for watching your favourite TV shows, films, or content creators. It also means you get to enjoy immersive gaming experiences on the UK’s best network for mobile gaming, which is fine-tuned to provide low-latency, jitter free gameplay and give you an advantage over the competition.

In short, it means that our customers know that when it counts for them, they can count on EE.

The fight for first

The UK’s mobile landscape is similar in a way to Premier League football, in the sense that it is fiercely competitive, with networks choosing to invest in different ways to deliver the best experience to customers.  Every day we combat enormous challenges to provide the connectivity our customers up and down the country need, whether that is a pandemic, cyber-threats, extreme weather, planning and supply chain issues, pressure from the competition, or something else.

To have consistently overcome these and led the chasing pack for more than ten years demonstrates our focus on delivering the best possible network experience for our customers. We are continuing to invest to make sure they are empowered to keep connecting to the people and things they care most about, whether they are in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol or anywhere in between.

Our new pricing structure for the future

By Marc Allera, CEO, BT Group’s Consumer division.

Our annual price change is never an easy conversation to have with customers, particularly when so many people are dealing with the increasing cost of living. But it is a necessary conversation to have to help us manage our own rising costs and investments we’re making into networks and customer service, while also protecting those customers in vulnerable circumstances, suffering from financial hardship or digital exclusion.

Following Ofcom’s recent consultation, the way we communicate and charge for the contracts we provide (for both new and re-contracting customers) is going to change.

What are we changing?

We currently use a model that was introduced as part of Ofcom’s Fairness for Customers commitments in 2019 that adjusts customer pricing every year, on 31st March, by the rate of inflation (CPI) +3.9%.

At the end of last year, Ofcom shared a consultation advising that prices linked to inflation can be confusing for customers, because they don’t have certainty on exactly what their price change will be. They don’t know because inflation can go up by different amounts each year, and isn’t set until the December CPI figure is published in January. They made clear that while price increases within contract are okay, they must be set out more clearly.

Ofcom is proposing an amended regulation requiring that any price change written into a customer’s contract needs to be set out in pounds and pence, prominently and transparently, at the point of sale. That includes being clear about when any changes to prices will occur.

We’re listening, and we’ve taken this on board.

Ofcom will finalise its decision on the proposed requirements in the coming months, with new pricing models in place no later than four months after that.

So, starting in early summer, we will introduce a pricing model consistent with Ofcom’s approach, moving away from % figures and CPI, and offering instead, a clear and simple view of any changes in “pounds and pence”. For new and re-contracting mobile customers we expect this increase to be from £1.50 (for Sim Only and Airtime, for example), and for broadband customers £3.

Until then, we continue to follow the existing rules, with our annual March 31st price increase of CPI + 3.9% going ahead as per normal.  With the CPI inflation rate being announced tomorrow, most of our customers can expect an increase of a few pounds per month, about the price of a takeaway coffee each month.

Helping people under pressure

Our new pricing model isn’t for all our customers, however. There will be no changes for our customers in financially vulnerable circumstances on EE Basics or BT Home Essentials.

The cost of living and a digitally inclusive society are now more relevant and important than ever. We are continually thinking about how we – and the wider industry – can play our part alongside policymakers to drive meaningful change, at a time when we can see so many people under pressure.

I am proud that we have led the market for many years, first with BT Basic, (for some time the only social tariff for phone lines and broadband on offer across the entire industry), and more recently our fibre-based broadband tariff Home Essentials. Today we provide broadband for 72% of those in the UK who take social tariffs.

At the same time, customers’ consumption of data, across the industry, has trebled across mobile and fixed networks in the past five years alone. All this, while telco services continue to make up only a small and declining share of household outgoings, representing just 3.5% of average monthly basket spend.

In real terms, people pay less for their connectivity now than they ever did and get much more. As an industry, we continue to give our customers outstanding value for money.

We’ll continue to offer our customers the best and most reliable connection on our networks, with the latest tech and brilliant UK-based service. And we’ll let our customers know clearly and in good time how the way we communicate and charge for their contracts is going to change.

It’s all part of our ambition to be the most personal, customer-focused brand in the UK.

EE COMPLETES FIRST STAGE OF SHARED RURAL NETWORK AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

People living, working, and visiting rural communities across the UK are benefiting from enhanced mobile connectivity after EE completed its widespread 4G coverage upgrades under the first phase of the Shared Rural Network (SRN) ₁ six months ahead of schedule.

The SRN is a £1 billion partnership between the UK’s four mobile network operators and the UK government to extend reliable and fast 4G mobile connectivity to rural areas that need it most.

To deliver the first phase of the programme, all operators committed to upgrade or build mobile infrastructure and extend the reach of their 4G networks to eliminate partial not-spots – areas which receive coverage from at least one operator, but not all.

The Ofcom deadline for all the operators to meet their individual SRN coverage targets for partial not-spot areas is June 2024.

Careful planning and prioritised investment have meant EE has expanded its 4G network – already the largest in the country – to over 1,600 more countryside communities across every region of the UK, exceeding its SRN targets in advance of the deadline.

The second phase of the SRN, publicly funded by the UK Government, is due to be completed in 2027 and will develop new-shared masts to bring 4G connectivity to areas with no existing mobile service.

EE’s mobile network remains the most reliable in the UK and now provides mobile coverage and internet access to 99% of the population and 88% of the UK’s entire landmass. ₂ Following its SRN upgrades, EE’s 4G geographic coverage in each individual nation now stands at: England (94%), Northern Ireland (89%), Scotland (77%), and Wales (86%).

Having signed up to its SRN commitments in March 2020, the extensive upgrades delivered under the programme have, in part, enabled EE to expand 4G connectivity for its customers across the UK by a further 10,000 square kilometres over the last five years. This equates to a size 26 times greater than the Isle of Wight.

Greg McCall, Chief Networks Officer, commented: “Today is another major milestone in our ongoing work to help close the UK’s digital divide. From farmers in Northern Ireland and local businesses in the Scottish Highlands, to tourists in the Lake District or Eryri National Park, EE is delivering the reliable mobile connectivity Britain’s rural communities need.

“Even though we have met our Shared Rural Network commitments months ahead of time, we will continue to focus on enhancing mobile connectivity in areas without any existing coverage to ensure everyone – residents, tourists, local businesses and the emergency services – have the connectivity they need to thrive in the years ahead.”

To balance the desire for enhanced mobile connectivity in remote areas with the need to respect the natural landscape, EE has taken steps to situate its sleek mobile masts in non-intrusive locations while providing maximum benefit to the places where people live, work, and travel.

These widespread 4G upgrades come at an important time for countryside communities as the UK’s mobile providers have begun retiring older 3G – and later 2G – networks. 4G connectivity offers rural communities the biggest and most reliable network of any current mobile technology in the UK.

Wednesday 10th January 2024, London: Today, the five nominees for this year’s prestigious EE Rising Star Award, now in its 19th year and created in honour of the late Mary Selway, were announced during a press conference at The Savoy Hotel in London.

The press conference was introduced by BAFTA CEO, Jane Millichip and hosted by Film Critic & Radio Host, Ali Plumb and Actor & Producer, Stephen Graham, who revealed the highly anticipated 2024 nominee shortlist. The nominees consist of five actors who have each demonstrated their remarkable talent in film over the past year, having captured the imagination of both the public and film industry alike.

The EE Rising Star Award nominees for 2024 are:

PHOEBE DYNEVOR can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed finance thriller, Fair Play. Directed by Chloe Domont, Phoebe stars as ‘Emily’. The story follows a young couple (Emily and Luke) whose relationship starts to unravel following an unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund firm. The film premiered at Sundance early 2023 and entered a bidding war securing the film for international release. Phoebe is arguably best known for her role as Daphne Bridgerton in Shonda Rhimes’ global phenomenon, Bridgerton. Dynevor is also set to star opposite Diane Lane and Zoey Deutch in thriller, Anniversary. The film follows a very close-knit family that is torn apart as new movement “The Change” envelops the U.S.

Phoebe Dynevor commenting on her nomination, said: “Being recognised by the EE BAFTA Film Awards for the EE Rising Star Award is a testament to the hard work of the entire team on ‘Fair Play’ who brought this film to life. I am truly grateful for this recognition and excited to continue challenging myself with new roles and projects. Thank you to BAFTA and EE for listing me alongside this year’s wonderful nominees.”

AYO EDEBIRI is an American comedian, writer, producer, actress and voice actress who most recently starred in Bottoms, a satirical teen comedy directed by Emma Seligman and co-written with Rachel Sennott which premiered in August 2023. The film follows the story of two high school senior girls who set up a fight club as a vehicle to hook up with cheerleaders; Ayo plays the leading role of ‘Josie’. She has also starred opposite Jeremy Allen White in breakout television show, The Bear. Ayo delivered high praise for her performance as character ‘Sydney’, earning her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, alongside multiple ensemble nominations. Edebiri continues to voice the character ‘Missy’ in the hit show Big Mouth on which she is also a writer.

Ayo Edebiri, commenting on her nomination, said: “It’s wonderful and humbling to receive this nomination. It’s the greatest privilege to tell stories and make people laugh. I know I’m in esteemed company and this means the world.”

JACOB ELORDI can currently be seen starring in award season contender, the psychological thriller, Saltburn, as well as the iconic Elvis Presley opposite Cailee Spaeny in Sofia Coppola’s film Priscilla. Directed by Academy-Award winning filmmaker, Emerald Fennell, Saltburn follows a student (Barry Keoghan) who is invited to an alluring classmate’s (Elordi) estate for a thrilling summer. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and opened the BFI London Film Festival in 2023. Upcoming projects include The Narrow Road to The Deep North, an Australian limited series set during World War II based on Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel as well as Oh Canada in which he stars alongside Uma Thurman and Richard Gere, which follows a dying documentary filmmaker who comes to terms with his legacy for Paul Schrader.

Jacob Elordi, commenting on his nomination, said: “I am deeply honoured to be recognised by BAFTA and EE with a Rising Star nomination.”

MIA MCKENNA-BRUCE is an English actress who is receiving acclaim for her lead performance in Molly Manning-Walker’s film, How to Have Sex. The film, in which she plays Tara, follows three British teenage girls on a trip to Malia, a Greek Island of Crete, for a rites-of-passage holiday filled with drinking, clubbing, and hooking up. It was released in November 2023. Meanwhile in 2022, Mia gave a scene-stealing performance in the role of ‘Mary Musgrove’, the younger sister of Dakota Johnson’s ‘Anne Elliot’ in the film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. This follows her nomination for a Royal Television Society Award in 2017 for ‘Performance of the Year’ for her role of ‘Tee Taylor’ in the BBC’s television series The Dumping Ground.

Mia McKenna-Bruce commenting on her nomination, said: “I have always been inspired by the work of those actors recognised in the BAFTA EE Rising Star category. To hear that I now stand amongst the past and present nominees is surreal and a total dream come true. I am so very grateful, thank you to the jury.”

SOPHIE WILDE most recently appeared on our screens as the lead in Talk To Me. Labelled the ‘scariest horror movie of 2023’, the film debuted at Sundance last year to rave reviews, with critics praising Sophie’s performance as Mia. The project quickly became A24’s highest grossing film of the year. The Australian actress will next appear in Baby Girl, alongside Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson and Boy Swallows Universe, opposite Phoebe Tonkin. In addition, Sophie recently led in Everything Now. Written by Ripley Parker, Sophie took on the role of Mia, opposite Stephen Fry. The series was celebrated by critics, with Sophie’s performance in particular receiving praise.

Sophie Wilde, commenting on her nomination, said: “I am so very excited and grateful to BAFTA and EE for including me in this category and amongst this year’s brilliant nominees. To be recognised, and for Talk To Me, a film we all put so much love and hard work into, is a privilege.”

This year, the EE Rising Star Award jury panel was tasked with selecting the 2024 nominees from a comprehensive list of talented actors. The jury met at The Savoy Hotel in November 2023 where they whittled down the longlisted names to these five nominees, and who will go head-to-head in the public vote ahead of the 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards.

The jury, chaired by Anna Higgs, BAFTA Film Committee Chair, featured actors Daisy Edgar-Jones, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Himesh Patel, casting directors Lucy Bevan (The Batman), and Nina Gold (Game of Thrones), film producer Adam Ackland (The End We Start From) alongside leading industry specialists.

Ali Plumb, EE Rising Star Award host, said: “I’m honoured to be hosting this year’s EE Rising Star Award Nominees Announcement at The Savoy – what an incredible line-up! Each rising star talent deserves this spotlight, having provided extraordinary performances serving as inspiration for the next generation. If you haven’t already, I would encourage you all to watch the nominees’ films, they are all wonderful in their own way, and vote for your favourite performance.”

Pete Jeavons, Marketing Communications Director at EE, added: “We are thrilled to continue our valued partnership with the BAFTA Film Awards, now in its 27th year running, in spotlighting emerging talent through the EE Rising Star Award. This year’s five exceptional nominees mark a pivotal moment in celebrating fresh voices and innovation in the film industry. We are immensely proud to support this initiative, championing creativity and providing a platform for the next generation of talented individuals to shine on a global stage. I urge everyone to go online and vote.”

Jane Millichip, CEO at BAFTA, said: “I am delighted to celebrate the exceptional talent showcased by this year’s five nominees for the EE Rising Star Award. These remarkable individuals represent what BAFTA and the EE Rising Star Award stand for as the future of the film industry, embodying innovation, dedication, and a commitment to storytelling that captivates audiences worldwide. I look forward to seeing who will take home the award on 18th February.”

Voting is now open at ee.co.uk/BAFTA and the winner will be announced at the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2024. The ceremony will be held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 18th February and will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and on BritBox International in the USA, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and South Africa, with more international territories to be confirmed.

The EE Rising Star Award stands as the only EE BAFTA Film Awards category to be voted for by the British public, reinforcing EE’s commitment to become the UK’s most personal, customer-focused brand by providing the nation with an opportunity to have their voice heard. Previous winners include Emma Mackey, Lashana Lynch, Bukky Bakray, Micheal Ward, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, John Boyega, and Tom Hardy.

LONDON UNDERGROUND ROLL-OUT CONTINUES AS EE BRINGS 4G TO THE FIRST ELIZABETH LINE STATIONS INCLUDING BOND STREET AND LIVERPOOL STREET

  • Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street stations all now benefit from EE’s superfast 4G
  • Mobile coverage is now live on platforms, escalators and in ticket halls – with tunnels to be connected early in 2024
  • EE customers have consumed over 424TB of data on Central and Northern lines in the 12 months since first stations went live

20th December 2023: EE today announces the arrival of London’s best mobile network1 on TfL’s Elizabeth line, with four central London stations stretching from the West End to the City now live with its superfast 4G.

The Elizabeth line is TfL’s newest train line, having opened in May 2022, and becomes the fourth to receive underground mobile connectivity, joining stations along the Jubilee, Northern and Central lines as part of the ongoing roll-out in partnership with Boldyn Networks.

Billed as London’s ‘east-west railway’, the first Elizabeth line stations to receive mobile connectivity are situated in some of the capital’s busiest locations stretching from Bond Street in its iconic West End through to Liverpool Street in the heart of the City of London.

Today’s news also marks 12 months since EE first announced high-speed mobile connectivity at stations beyond the eastern half of the Jubilee line, and rounds-off a busy year which has seen a total of 25 stations go live, including in recent weeks Goodge Street, Warren Street and several surrounding tunnels to deliver continuous Northern Line coverage between Tottenham Court Road and Archway.

In that time, EE customers have consumed 424TB of data while travelling along the connected stations and tunnels of the Central and Northern lines. This equates to spending over 72,000 hours streaming 4K video, 106 million hours of music streaming, or 28 million hours browsing the internet – demonstrating the value EE’s 4G and 5G networks provide in keeping customers entertained, connected and informed during their journeys.

Greg McCall, Chief Networks Officer, BT Group, said: “We’re delighted to bring the UK’s best network2 to the first Elizabeth line stations, marking another significant milestone in the roll-out of 4G and 5G across the London Underground. That we’re already seeing vast amounts of data consumed by our customers while they travel signifies how important this project is for London’s residents, visitors and businesses, and we’re excited to accelerate the deployment as we head into 2024.”

EE’s coverage is delivered in partnership with Boldyn Networks, whose multi-carrier network connects London Underground’s stations and tunnels both with each other and with the outside world. EE’s mobile network connects to this infrastructure via base stations from Nokia’s AirScale radio access portfolio, providing immediate and continuous mobile coverage to customers.

EE TV – THE NEXT STEP FORWARD FOR NEW EE

By Marc Allera, CEO, EE.

The launch of EE TV is one of the first significant strides we’re taking since we launched New EE in October, when we moved the best of everything we offer – mobile, broadband, TV and other converged services – to our EE brand and EE platform.

Our EE TV service is a great example of how New EE does more for our customers. It’s built for busy households, and we believe it will elevate the TV experience for consumers across the UK. Our new range of powerful set-top boxes will give customers a slick and premium experience for watching the best entertainment, sport and movies via our flexible content packages.

And, in an exciting UK-first, we’re launching EE TV on Apple TV 4K via the new EE TV app, with a bespoke TV guide that gives you a live TV experience featuring more than 70 Freeview channels including BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, plus a new EE-branded remote. You can read more about what more new EE TV can do, our new hardware and how can also take out a multi-room option at no extra charge, here: https://newsroom.ee.co.uk/ee-launches-ee-tv–a-comprehensive-new-service-offering-flexible-access-to-premium-content-a-uk-first-with-apple-tv-4k-and-free-multi-room/.

We are proud to work with amazing companies at the heart of technology innovation every day. And our EE TV launch is just one part of New EE’s plans to evolve what we offer, with compelling experiences for consumers across the UK. The changes we are making and these announcements are about us adapting to meet our customers’ needs for now, and for the next decade.

The second part of what we’re changing is that New EE is built on a new technology platform. We have created a new way of joining our brand and our service. We’ve put an EE Identity – an account – at the heart of that, which means anyone can join us. You don’t need broadband or mobile connectivity with us to join New EE. And that means we can truly be open to anyone in the country who wants to create a relationship with us. You can set up your EE ID in less than a minute on our website, or by downloading our app. However, you do need EE broadband to get EE TV.

The third part of the story is the new verticals and other services that we’re providing, from gaming to security to insurance. We already have a huge amount of confidence that it will work because we’ve been testing and trialling over the past few months in a few verticals. One of which is gaming. We’re not in the business of making games. We’re not going out to rival Activision Blizzard in Call of Duty, for example. But what we can do is partner with some of these brands brilliantly. We partner with some of the best brands on the planet at what they do and we create brilliant services that are giving our customers more.

A TELCO FIT FOR THE FUTURE

The best of everything on New EE, our new platform and the EE ID, and the new verticals we now offer are the next step for us adapting to what the role of a telco is in the future. As the UK’s largest subscription business, we are evolving to play a much more important role in customers’ lives beyond the essential connectivity we are famous for.

And, as I said it’s open to anyone, you won’t need to have a mobile or broadband account with us. It means you could be on any network yet still be able to buy a smartphone or games console from us, or put all your digital subscriptions in one place to make life a little easier to manage.

This is just the start. Upcoming releases will see us add more partners, subscriptions, services and capability, like the ability to log into other sites and services so that you don’t have to worry about remembering all your passwords.

Today, we’re really excited to have launched a truly flexible TV experience for the busiest homes. We believe EE TV is set to give consumers more choice, and more flexibility.

New EE is here. New EE will do more than we’ve ever done for our customers. And we can’t wait to bring you with us on the next step of our journey.
