The Xperia 1, which was unveiled for the first time at MWC this year, launched with two smartphone world-firsts.

It’s the first smartphone with a 4K HDR OLED display¹, bringing true-to-life colour and crystal-clear content in 21:9 – the same aspect ratio as the modern blockbuster film. What’s more, the Xperia 1 also boasts the world’s first Eye AutoFocus (AF) in a smartphone², meaning that capturing stunning portrait photography is easier and more spontaneous.

Smartphone innovation has always been at the core of Sony Mobile engineers’ design philosophy, but you probably don’t realise just how many of the features that Xperia users take for granted were world-firsts that changed the way we use our phones.

When the Xperia Z launched, it boasted the highest level of smartphone water resistance³, while the Xperia XZ2 arrived on the market with the world’s first 4K HDR Movie recording in a smartphone⁴. The Xperia XZ2 Premium, meanwhile, offers users the chance to watch their films and videos with a 4K HDR display, as well as being the first smartphone with Gigabit-class download speeds⁵.

¹Xperia 1 – Worlds First 4K HDR OLED display on a smartphone

Xperia 1 features a 6.5 inch Ultra Wide 4K (1644 x 3840px) OLED High Dynamic Range (HDR) display. The 21:9 CinemaWide screen allows you to experience a cinematic aspect ratio and colour accuracy to bring you a picture that’s true to the creator’s vision. ²Xperia 1 – Worlds First Eye AutoFocus in a smartphone

³Xperia Z – Highest level of water resistance in a smartphone

As of 4th February 2013 (outside of Japan). In compliance with IP55 and IP57, Xperia Z is protected against the ingress of dust and is water resistant. Provided that all ports and covers are firmly closed, the phone is (i) protected against low pressure jets of water from all practicable directions in compliance with IP 55; and/or (ii) can be kept under 1 meter of freshwater for up to 30 minutes in compliance with IP 57.

⁴Xperia XZ2 – first 4K HDR movie recording in a smartphone

Xperia XZ2 captures and stores 4K HDR video with a colour depth of 10-bit in HLG format.
