Recently, Gartner, a world-renowned technology research and advisory company, released the worldwide server market report for Q4 2017. According to the report, Huawei ranks No. 1 by 4-socket (4S) rack server shipments in both the global^(*1) and China markets^(*2).

Two-socket (2S) servers have long been known in the industry as the mainstay powerhouse for the digital transformation of enterprises in recent years. However, the latest-generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors have delivered new levels of performance for key indicators such as core count per processor, UltraPath Interconnect (UPI) speeds, number of memory channels, memory bandwidth, and Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) features.

Compared with 2S servers, 4S servers emerge and stand out by superior performance, higher performance-density ratios, greater memory capacity, and advanced RAS features. For computing resource pools, 4S servers mean significantly higher compute density, less rack space, and lower operating expenditure (OPEX). For a single computing platform demanding high performance and reliability, such as computing platforms based on Oracle, SQL Server, or SAP HAHA in-memory databases, 4S servers provide stronger performance, larger memory capacity, and better business continuity. In the foreseeable future, more and more enterprises, in view of the preceding advantages, will opt for 4S servers for carrying IT services.

A case in point is the FusionServer 2488H V5 server recently released by Huawei. The 2U 4S rack server is ideal for compute-intensive scenarios such as virtualization, high-performance computing (HPC), database, and SAP HANA. In the virtualization scenario, one FusionServer 2488H V5 reduces OPEX by about 32%^(*3) compared with two traditional 2U 2S rack servers. FusionServer 2488H V5 supports 4 Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors in a 2U form factor, up to 48 DDR4 dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) with 2,666 MT/s speeds, and up to 25 2.5-inch hard drives for local storage (configurable with 8 NVMe SSDs).

As one of the Huawei new-generation intelligent servers, FusionServer 2488H V5 integrates patented Dynamic Energy Management Technology (DEMT) for intelligent power consumption management, improving performance per watt by up to 16%. It also combines a patented Fault Diagnosis and Management (FDM) mechanism for intelligent fault management. Leveraging two intelligent self-learning expert libraries: the fault diagnostics and prewarning libraries, FusionServer 2488H V5 enables an accuracy of up to 93% for locating system crash problems and slashes fault locating time from hours to several minutes. The server supports the Huawei eSight entire-lifecycle management software, which provides a rich array of O&M tools. The Huawei new-generation intelligent servers set themselves apart by delivering high levels of intelligence and efficiency, helping enterprises reduce data center OPEX and improve the return on investment (ROI) in IT systems.

FusionServer 2488H V5 is yet another example of how with constant and intensive R&D investment, Huawei has set industry benchmarks and achieved technological breakthroughs. Building on Huawei’s years of tireless server engineering, as well as a deposite of leading capabilities and differentiated technical strength, Huawei servers have refreshed multiple world records with qualities such as excellent integrated optimization of underlying software and hardware, efficient heat dissipation, and high-speed signal links. The FusionServer 2488H V5 alone has shattered multiple SPEC and SAP HAHA benchmark test records, such as SPECint®_rate_base2017, SPEC MPIL2007, SPEC MPIM2007, and Business Warehouse for HANA, demonstrating the superior hardware performance, integrated software and hardware tuning, and fundamental engineering capabilities of Huawei servers.
