O2 welcomes FTSE100 2050 Net Zero move – but industry must do more

As a sustainability leader, we’re welcoming the news that 30 of the FTSE100 have signed up to become Net Zero by 2050 – but we’re also urging other major UK businesses, including our tech peers, to join us in going even further, working together to enable a low carbon economy faster.

This week, the government announced that 30 of the UK’s FTSE 100 businesses have committed to eliminate their contribution to carbon emissions by 2050. At O2 we’re proud to have set the bar for UK mobile a year ago with our own pledge to become a Net Zero carbon business by 2025. And now, it’s really encouraging to see almost a third of Britain’s biggest companies – across all kinds of sectors – join us in making Net Zero a real part of their business plans.

Working together in the race to zero

As well as putting our own stake in the ground with our 2025 Net Zero plans, we’re working with our parent company, Telefónica, to support the Race to Zero. We know that connectivity and digital technology can play a key role in supporting other sectors to decarbonise – from flexible working to IoT, smart meters to smart cities. In 2020 alone, our products and services helped customers to save over 1.4m tonnes of carbon, so we’re committed to leveraging our technology, including 5G, to help many more businesses on the journey to Net Zero.

Change for good

There’s no debating that targets are important, but now that plans are set, we mustn’t lose momentum. From telecoms to retail, manufacturing to transport, we’re all responsible for building a greener economy – and as we look to the future, sustainability really should be running through the life blood of every business in Britain. It’s time for businesses, suppliers and customers to work together and go further and faster towards cutting emissions for good.
