Brennan IT’s new world of backup and recovery

BACKGROUND

Leading Australian managed services provider Brennan IT saw the need for an effective cloud based backup and disaster recovery service for the Australian market. Enterprise backup and disaster recovery solutions minimise downtime by enabling protection of an entire ICT environment for rapid recovery, regulatory compliance and data growth. Brennan IT saw that organisations needed the same functionality and robustness.

The solution needed to be scalable and professionally managed. After testing and due diligence of software and hardware options, Brennan IT chose Commvault software with Huawei hardware.

KEY CHALLENGES

To best serve the Australian market, Brennan IT needed to develop a robust, scalable storage platform for software controlled backups of large server farm. Its existing platform was not able to scale, requiring constant manual intervention, and experienced isolated failures. The challenge was to develop a solution with enterprise scale robustness based on cloud technology – a Backupas-a-Service(BaaS) and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) solution. Key criteria were to provide Brennan IT’s customers with proven performance consistency in a lab and a real world environment, quality documentation, direct access to technical support teams, strong willingness to customise via R&D team, and favourable commercial terms.

SOLUTION

After a thorough market evaluation, Brennan IT selected Huawei’s massive scale-out NAS storage OceanStor 9000 with Commvault’s Enterprise Backup software. The OceanStor 9000 provides key advantages such as large capacity, high performance, and flexible scalability as well as a range of value-added features. It is well suited to support industries such as broadcasting, media and entertainment (M&E), high-performance computing (HPC), Internet service providers, data centres, and large organisations. The OceanStor 9000 features outstanding performance, flexible scalability, robust reliability, and simplified management, helping enterprises reduce both capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX). Commvault’s integrated, automated data protection approach provides a single, complete view of all stored data – on premise or in the cloud. It provides back up for databases, files, applications, endpoints and VMs with maximum efficiency according to data type and recovery profile. Brennan IT implemented fifteen physical nodes in the production area, eight in Sydney and seven in Brisbane. Both sites back up the data to each other for full data redundancy, providing a high performance backup and storage platform across the two regions that requires minimal internal management. This BaaS and DRaaS solution was custom designed for Brennan IT’s customers: It proved such a success that within three months of launch it was further expanded to satisfy increased market demand.

Brennan IT anticipates further growth as its customers better understand the benefits of working with experts who can take away their headaches while supplying fully-outsourced and customized computing infrastructure for business. Rather than buying servers, software licenses, network equipment and data centre space, they can buy all of them bundled as a managed service. This Opex (operational expenditure) model allows for tailoring and configuring for each specific customer’s organisation and application requirements.

 CUSTOMER BENEFITS

Brennan IT CTO Ken Jeffreys says the BaaS and DRaaS solution provided immediate benefits to the company and its customers. “The management is simple and straightforward. Huawei and Commvault have worked together to improve overall backup performance by four to five times. By shrinking the backup window, we have saved costs and expanded our BaaS and DRaaS business.” Brennan IT uses the remote web console to create the CIFS share folder on the storage system, and maps to Commvault Media Agent, taking advantages of the management simplicity of Commvault’s backup software. The customer can add Commvault Media Agent on demand and use the same shared folder on the storage system. Single file system on the storage system makes it even easier to maintain those data within one single namespace. Because of its simplicity and scalability, Brennan IT can easily expand the capacity on demand to meet the flexible business needs.
